England 5 - 0 Albania
Northern Ireland 1 – 0 Lithuania

A good day for the UK all round.
Indeed

Moldova 0 - 2 Scotland

Wales play tomorrow and I would expect them to beat Belarus for a clean sweep over European opposition.

Montenegro 2 – 2 Netherlands

Very well played by Montenegro. Hats off to them. It was 0–2 until around the 80th minute, but they really pulled out all the stops in those last few minutes to wrangle a draw.

Imagine thinking that anyone outside North America or Canada gives a shit about sports in that region and thus would understand that reference.

Since you asked: The Toronto Maple Leafs haven’t won the Stanley Cup, the NHL’s championship, since 1967. They have only made the final once in that time. This is despite having every opportunity and means to put together fantastic teams. They have become synonymous with ineptitude and it is made worse by their blindly devoted fan base adoring them even though the franchise appears to be more concerned with making money.

It’s kind of exactly what England is like in international football.

What are we supposed to do? Support France instead? What a silly comparison.

even though the franchise appears to be more concerned with making money.
England isn't a franchise and it doesn't make very much money when compared with clubs.

It’s kind of exactly what England is like in international football.
No. Its nothing like England. England are always one of the top teams in the world. There are 211 FIFA ranked teams right now. England are currently ranked 5th in the world. That's nothing like the Maple Leafs.

Big date for your diaries ...

TUESDAY 16TH NOVEMBER
Netherlands v Norway

If Norway beat the Netherlands ... the Dutch aren't going to the world cup ... again.

They have previously failed to qualify in 1958, 1962, 1966, 1970, 1982, 1986, 2002 & last time out in 2018.

I know you can’t fathom a world where your allegiances aren’t constrained by arbitrary borders, but it’s already out there.

So you think people from Germany should just support Italy if Germany isn't playing so well, and when France aren't doing to sell, their fans support maybe Spain? How ridiculous. You are what is called a glory hunter. A plastic supporter. You don't just support a team when they are winning. The time when they need your support is when they aren't doing so well. What an awful fan you are.

I wish you'd learn to quote properly. The national team isn't there to bring in revenue. Its there to bring the nation together during tournaments and make us feel proud of our country. Which is important if you ever want those same people to defend that country from say China or the USA.

There are 211 countries. The world cup is every 4 years. This means you should win the world cup on average, once every 844 years. England have already won it before. Its not our turn again until the year 2810. If we win it any time again before then, we're successful. When was the last time your country won the world cup? Oh, that's right ... never.

You aren't European and come from a country that knows nothing about football. Its fine, I'll explain.

There are 6 teams in a group. And everyone plays everyone else twice. Once at home, and once away. This means everyone has to play 5 other teams twice for a total of 10 games. As you can see, group G have all played 9 games, meaning they all have one game to play.

The Netherlands have to play Norway.
Turkey have to play Montenegro.

You get 3 pts for a win. 1 pt for a draw and 0 pts for a loss.

Turkey will beat Montenegro. This is because Turkey is a solid team with some world class players and Montenegro is a tiny country that is going to lose.

This will mean Turkey will finish the group with 21 pts.
If Norway beat Netherlands, they too will have 21 pts.
The Netherlands will finish 3rd with 20 pts and will fail to qualify as only the top two teams in each group progress.

I hope that helps and that your appreciation of the beautiful game can continue to develop as you learn more about it.
