Flat Earth Investigations / Re: Weather forecasts

One of Thork’s better ‘throw shit and see what sticks’ threads. Started with a poorly-conceived rant about two conflicting NYE forecasts for Great Britain, now we’re on to climate deniers, evil Fauci, lying sports scientists (what!?).

Can we get this back on track or you can just admit you just got sad that you couldn’t pre-plan which leather jacket to wear to the pub on NYE.

The failure of scientists and science communicators in conveying the relevant take homes points of climate change is a thread all on its own.

Alas, stupid voters are why [insert name of any democratic nation] is in decline.
To very differing extents. Surely you're not going to act as if the US was your average democracy?
Absolutely not. It’s probably more true in other countries, for very different reasons. Countries with more than two parties and a first past the post system will have larger majorities of the population who didn’t vote for those in power.

Just pointing out that most people who voted for the non-ruling party think that ‘stupid’ voters are the reason the right person isn’t in charge

Yep, as fun as it is to shit on them for missing the odd isolated shower in their forecast that ruins your picnic, accurate forecasting has saved countless lives and trillions of dollars in property damage by providing reliable advanced warning for major events.

You make it seem like it should be 100% correct all the time if you just throw enough computing power at the problem, which is obviously not the issue.

Weather forecasting also suffered during the earlier parts of the pandemic because there were fewer flights and observations reported by commercial pilots.

It does drive me crazy hearing cop-out forecasts in the summer that are basically just admissions of defeat, loaded with catch-all phrases that mean they really can’t tell us what it’s going to do. And note they always report 40 or 60% chance of precipitation… if they said 50, they’d basically be admitting it’s a coin flip! That doesn’t mean we don’t have a good sense of what’s coming down the pipe though. We understand many of the the feedbacks and climate responses, there just isn’t enough detail yet to fully capture the details.

Easy to hate on the disguised voice in some of the recent movies. But it at least made sense in Batman Begins. You could see why he thought he needed to. It just got a little ridiculous in the Dark Knight.

But I completely agree about the batfleck voice disguise being unnecessary. I’m cautiously optimistic about the new one, but ready to be disappointed.

RIP John Madden. Absolutely ridiculous breakdowns of plays, but extremely likeable guy at all times on the air, which is way more than I can say for most of the prime time casters today. John really really loved football (🏈) and it showed. Gonna have to watch the doc that just got released now.

I think Honk is mostly right as well. It’s bad phrasing making it seem worse than it is and giving the entire right a free pass at crucifying him.

But it’s also his own doing, and not just a poor choice of once in one isolated instance. Yes it’s difficult to implement federal policies in the US when each state has so much independence to just railroad anything that comes along they don’t like. But Biden is supposed to be a leader - regardless of what he’s up against, he should be actively charting a path forward and championing that path. This reeks of a cop-out where he’s going to try to pin the blame on the red states when things spiral out of control next. As much blame as individual governors may have in this, it’s still not an excuse for Joe ‘the buck stops here’ Biden to just hedge his bets instead of taking action.

That’s pretty shite leadership if he’s saying that, even if efforts at the federal level have been hampered by state politicians.

One of my former Profs held similar views. And I always thought it was impressive how he held both his religion and his scientific endeavours in equally high regard. For a guy who does cutting age research on constraining the age and metamorphic processes involve in a 1Billion year-old mountain building event, it was oddly refreshing to see that he was still a devout Christian. I’m not remembering he ended up writing a book about it and I kinda want to track down the title now…

The are billions of millions of tons of water in the ocean. 1.45x10^21 kg. Plus they’ve gained another nine million million tons from melting of ice sheets since the 60’s.

But that’s all a drop in the bucket compared to the earth’s 5.9x10^24 kg mass. And because of its size, that means that all that water amounts to little more than a thin skin around it. Similar in comparison to the amount of water that would stick to a basketball after submerging it in a bucket of water 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'm not sure you know how to set up initial parameters at all based on this. The initial velocity between the jumper and the Earth should be 0 m/s, shouldn't it? After all, isn't the jumper at a fixed distance above the Earth, relative to the Earth, when they jump?

While the jumper is on the chair, he would be accelerated at the same rate with the same velocity as the earth and the relative velocity would be zero.

But once he jumps, he is no longer being accelerated.  There is no force on him, no acceleration, no velocity. He's just hanging there inert. But the earth is still accelerating while he is hanging there, so the relative velocity between the jumper and the earth would be whatever the velocity the earth is moving relative to the jumper.
You’re going to have to try again, but also a lot harder I think

Journals publish articles with completely conflicting interpretations all the time. Those interpretations are (supposed to be) weighted against the evidence that supports them by reviewers and associate editors. If there is insufficient evidence to support claims/interpretations, a paper will be rejected.

Is it more difficult to go against the grain and publish ideas that question the status quo? Absolutely. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

Example topics just from the field of Quaternary Geology include Carolina Bays, the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis, forcing a of the 8.2ka cold event, origin of mega-scale glacial lineations on the Antarctic continental shelf, the volume and extent of the Laurentide Ice Sheet over the last glacial cycle (particularly during MIS3).

Why is the air thinner near the edges? How does it stay that way? If it’s thinner, there should be lower atmospheric pressure and therefore a wind developed that would work towards equalizing that pressure difference.

Weird, I spent 0.7 seconds looking and “find me gluten free” found 11 options in Toronto Pearson airport. Plus there are several stores you can buy other snacks which you are allowed to bring with you.

It’s really shitty these two people had to deal with this mess but your argument here, whatever it is, is pretty pointless.

Trudeau might be a lot less substance than his followers would like, but it’s not that sexyboi’s fault.
You cannot choose where to spend the time in quarantine. You will spend it where the government tells you to spend it. You will also pay for it.

It is not surprising you would be apologizing for and advocating for such a cunt.

Try reading what people write before blasting out some repeated line that you’d rehearsed

Which they could have picked up for themselves in either departing or arriving airport.

Feel bad for them obviously but if you are deathly allergic to wheat and know you’re going to be relying on shitty airport Hilton room service, there maybe should have been some foresight.

Blaming this on Canada’s fascist, sexy, son-of-Castro Prime Minister is quite the stretch
How do you know they could have obtained the food prior to imposition of the mandatory quarantine?

Answer - you don't know that.

You just typed a worthless sentence,  as usual.

Trudeau is a worthless piece of shit and I do not find it surprising you love him.

So he gets a vote, does he? Despite not knowing the actual name of the Prime Minister...

Well, yea, that’s…. How it goes.

Obviously it would be great if everyone was informed and engaged, and held their elected officials accountable for their actions and inaction related to different issues. We’re not there yet. But an entrance exam to gain access to a voting booth is one hell of a slippery slope
