Announcements / What this forum stands for
« on: December 01, 2013, 07:26:50 PM »
Until we get some more specific forum rules (hopefully later this week) to codify this, there's one particular point I'd like to emphasise.

On the old FES forum, there was frequently a drive to put the Society's public image first, or to encourage the registration of new members, both sometimes at the expense of the existing user base. I don't think that's how a forum community should work. This forum is going to be, first and foremost, about making every member who wants to be here feel welcome -- provided they abide by the rules and respect the right of others to feel comfortable here.

I won't turn away unpopular members from .org simply because they have annoyed people. They are a part of the community, and until such time as they begin disrespecting the rights of others, they are just as welcome as anyone else. The moment we begin discriminating based on how much we like someone is the moment we begin to fracture our community, and I don't want that to happen here the way it has happened on .org.

So please, try to be patient and tolerant of others, and remember that by treating others with respect, you ensure that your own place in this community will be protected by the friendly staff here at .sjm.so.

Thanks for your time.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Flat Earth FAQ: Discussion

About how big is equivalent?

I don't think it needs to be precisely defined. If someone looks at their sig and thinks "yeah, that's about five lines of text", it's good enough for me.

I need a definite answer for the first question btw.

125x125 for an avatar; a good rule of thumb for a signature is no more than 5 lines of text, or an equivalently sized image.

A wiki-based FAQ is a much better idea. Having it in a post is awkward and requires the OP or a mod to make any required changes. In the wiki, it's much easier to maintain, and thus much less likely to become outdated.

fine. please unlock my vagina thread though and return it to its state of former glory. I haven't finished talking about vaginas yet.

I'll just delete it and you can post a new one, in CN this time. Deal?

If you're going to create joke threads, do it in CN. I locked it at the same time that PizzaPlanet moved it into CN, so it was something of a case of overmoderation.

Kindly keep The Lounge sanitary and wholesome in the future. Thanks.

Can you change the symbol thingy? It sticks out like a sore thumb. Or add it in its own section, like wiki and concerns or something. Or maybe put it in the menu bar overhead, next to members.

It sticks out because it's a link and not a forum. I don't think it's that big a deal; and like I said, this is temporary until I work out a sensible way of integrating them better. This is just so we have an easily visible link to the wiki in the short term.

If the icon is really bothering you, you can AdBlock it for now.

One of my vague ideas about improving things is to better integrate the forum and the wiki, but for the time being having them accessible and discoverable is sufficient. I've added a link under Flat Earth Discussion Boards to the new wiki, so you don't have to remember the URL.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Forum structure
« on: December 01, 2013, 03:36:06 PM »
As I said in the thread in Announcements, I want people to feel at home here. We can revisit forum structure later once they've had a chance to settle in.

Making too many big changes early on is only going to drive regulars away.

In light of the database fuckup, I'd like to run my werewolf game here instead.

My hope is that it'll get people to register here.  Thoughts?

Sorry, I missed this before. I think that's a great idea; feel free to go ahead.

The first. My rage smiley. its mine and I love it.  :'( These smileys suck - you know we could shop for some cooler ones.

PizzaPlanet is handling this.

Second. We can't have the exact same theme. that's super seriously stupid. Gonna put this out there but I made a perfectly good theme that never got finished. All it needs is some smart person to sort out the avatar sizes in your top right box. Have a look. I don't think its that ugly, its different anyway and ok until one of our super talented admins comes up with something better.

I'm trying to make people feel at home. They've just had a month of posts yanked out from under them at .org; I don't want to make any huge radical changes that might put people off.

Once we're settled in, we can consider other theme options.

Third. Lets steal our fucking wiki back. we wrote it and its the only thing that ranks on the other site anyway.

It's underway, don't you worry.

Oh, I should ask, what can I do to help you?

A new FAQ would be lovely, and maybe even some forum rules that don't suck. I reserve the right to veto any rule that gets written, but if you could draft up a set of them, that would be very helpful. Just as long as we can call each other niggers afterwards.

I really think we should just be building for a relaunch and some announcement in the press about how the society has elected a new president.

I don't quite share that goal. I just want to make this forum the best possible place for people to talk about FET. If we start vying for political power in the Flat Earth Society, we're going to have a much tougher time of it.

Let's see how the forum goes before we try anything too drastic.

Also having all the same sections as FES is a bit silly. Lets look to do something smarter.

We don't have all the same sections. I got rid of FEB.

Please add youtube support.

All in good time. Please create a thread about things like this in S&C; just posting here is likely to go forgotten.

Hi, just wondering, is .tk possible? I know it's generally considered the free one, but I think it looks nicer.

If somebody registers a .tk domain name, we can use it for this site. Personally, I'm not too fussed about the domain.

Sounds good. You can run it if you want, Thork. Just make a thread in Announcements (let me know if you don't have permission).

Announcements / Help wanted to make this place better
« on: December 01, 2013, 12:28:31 PM »
In light of the recent botched migration of .org to a new server, and the fact that several people have expressed interest in moving somewhere else, I'd like to make this place better for all FESians. If you're willing and able to help with general improvements, please post in this thread.

I have some ideas myself for how to make things better, but they're mostly behind-the-scenes stuff that makes it easier for me to maintain the site, and they're not a very high priority.

I have just fixed a problem with using non-ASCII characters in thread titles (and, presumably, post bodies), reported by Crudblud.

More bug fixes to come as they are reported.

F*cking .org has been shit lately.  What the fuck is going on?

The only people who could tell you apparently have no interest in doing so.

On the bright side, I just found a way to massively speed up the responsiveness of this forum. Enjoy your faster forum browsing until we get .org back.

« on: August 30, 2013, 04:09:44 PM »
I'm not sure what took the .org site down, but feel free to talk here for as long as it's inaccessible. This is the forum I set up to let people upload themes during the theme contest; I've just repurposed it as a FES clone, so there may be rough edges (obvious ones include missing subforums and lack of members). This will be expanded upon if necessary to sustain the community.

Let me know if anything seems out of place to you.
