Search is case sensitive
« on: December 07, 2013, 03:36:50 PM »
This is very annoying. If the word I'm looking for is the first word in a sentence for example, I don't get a result for it.

Can this be altered, please?

Actually, search is behaving strangely. Experiment by searching the word zetetic. In quick search you get no results.

In normal search you get 5. Something is a bit weird.

I've just spent 15 minutes or so reading through the 1500-line PHP function that implements SMF's search algorithm, and I both want to kill myself and am no closer to knowing how to fix this. I'll come back to it, but it could take a while to decipher what the SMF developers were thinking when they decided it would be a good idea to code while on acid.

Do you observe the same strange behaviour (ie getting different returns for the same search at different times?)

and I both want to kill myself and am no closer to knowing how to fix this
My order of preference is that you fix the issue first.

PS - thanks for trying.

Yes, but I can at least explain that one. Quick search seems to apply to the current forum/thread, so if you quick search from S&C, you get different results from searching in FEIR.

Quick searching from the homepage seems to return everything.

Ahh, this I did not know.

I will likely never use quick search again now I know this.

Ahh, this I did not know.

Neither did I. I found it out by thinking about what I was doing.

Okay, here's an idea for solving the quicksearch "problem". I'm thinking about adding a little tickbox next to the quicksearch bar that lets you switch between a local (within current board/thread) search and a global one. That way we can get the best of both worlds. I'm looking into it as we speak.

This is more difficult than I thought. I'm going to have to postpone it until next week, but I'll definitely get something done.

I added the checkboxes (it was MUCH easier than I thought - big thanks to emily for pointing out the obvious to me). They look very clunky right now, but at least they allow both global and local search functionalities now.

Made it a bit less clunky. Still not perfect, but it's pretty good now.

I eagerly await the FES header up there slowly expanding over time as you guys add more and more things that require lengthening it each time.

Also, it works now. :D
