Brazil and Argentina -3 GMT
« on: October 23, 2017, 04:31:59 AM »
Hey, I just saw that Argentina and Brazil is in the same time zone. But then how come the sun is rising earlier in Buenos Aires then Sao Paulo? I think that is pretty odd..

What's odd about it? Time zones are large. One end of a time zone will have morning before the other. Not sure what your point is here. Elaborate?

sun goes up in the east right? and then where is Sao Paulo located? to the east of Buenos Aires. How come the sunrise is later in sao Paulo than Buenos Aires?? shouldn't it be the opposite?

This is only always true when two cities are on the same Latitude. In this particular instance they have such a large difference in latitude, with how the sun shines on the Earth the one to the West does actually get to see the sun first. I bet if you went to a date in the opposite season you would see closer to what you are expecting. Longitude isn't the only factor in sunset/rise times. This looks to have been taken during the opposite season to now, but should help get the point across.

Remember - the days are longer in the summer and shorter in the winter - also the AMOUNT by which that change happens depends on how far north or south of the equator you are.  When you're on the equator, day and night lengths are somewhat similar summer and winter - but at the poles, the days can stretch to weeks long!

So sunrise time is determined by both your latitude AND longitude (and also your altitude if we're being picky).   Governments impose "time-zones" and daylight savings tricks to roughly get sunrises and sunsets to be at sensible times - but often they botch it...so it's better to do all of your comparisons in GMT.   It always confuses me when I call home to the UK from the USA because the time offset is usually 6 hours - but is either 5 or 7 depending on who turns on daylight savings time on what day of the year!

Hey Tom:  What path do the photons take from the physical location of the sun to my eye at sunset?
