I just bought a NUC
« on: March 10, 2016, 08:37:19 PM »
So I just bought an Intel NUC. I got the Skylake i5 6th gen one.

It is going to be my casual PC. I'll use it for interacting with you guys, browsing the net, watching youtube and naked ladies, playing the odd game ... I rarely play games but I have Kerbal and I might get Football Manager 2016.

I got the following specs

Windows 10 Pro (thank you work)
6th Gen NUC Core i5-6260U, NUC6i5SYK (M.2 drive only)
DDR4 SODIMM 8GB (2x4GB) 1.2V 2133MHz Memory
Samsung SM951 128GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD

Full gubbings listed here

I'm going to need a name for it. I wanted one for a while but the graphics cards in them always sucked. The skylake one has ok graphics ... a huge leap from the 5th gen ones anyway. It should be with me in the next few days. :)

Name it Bilbo: Because it's so small, no one notices or cares about it.
If you are going to DebOOonK an expert then you have to at least provide a source with credentials of equal or greater relevance. Even then, it merely shows that some experts disagree with each other.

My last mini PC was called Nibbler because it was small and black. I almost called it Gary Coleman.

I can use a work Windows 10 license.

You can, but why would you want to? I wouldn't even take Windows for free.

Make it a Hackintosh then. Still a step up from Windows.

Many years ago, a color wheel on a Mac would have been a BSOD on Windows.

OS X is based on BSD UNIX and Mach. It is built upon the shoulders of the same giants that enabled and inspired OpenBSD (and the various other *BSDs), Linux (and by extension Android) and the GNU project (which gave our industry a standard compiler toolchain) to achieve greatness. In turn, it produced innovations such as Clang and LLVM (which are rapidly supplanting gcc as a superior industry-standard C toolchain), WebKit (which makes Google Chrome tick) and iOS (which paved the way for smartphones as we know them).

Windows is a product of an anticompetitive business strategy to specifically make it as hard as possible for anyone else to compete in the market, regardless of the technical merits of their product. It stands on the shoulders of bullies, not giants. It was based on DOS, which took to most features of UNIX by either ignoring them or poorly reinventing them, until Microsoft realised how crap their system was and reinvented everything yet again, leaving themselves no time to innovate. With their recent change of leadership and changing winds in the market, they are now trying to backpedal and cooperate with other projects more, but it's too little too late.

They both suck, but I know which one I'd be running if I had to pick.
