Spoke with Yaakov today on the phone. He bought a brewer and felt he couldn't use it until it had been blessed by a rabbi. Yaakov then took his brewer to a rabbi and had it submerged. He is now demanding a refund on the machine.

I'd sue the Rabbi for not knowing better:
Utensils That Cannot Be Immersed

If an item is too large to immerse, or it would be ruined through immersion, one should take it apart or otherwise break it, and then put it back together or fix it. When one does this, it is considered as if the utensil has been “manufactured by a Jew.”38 If one cannot do this, he should give the utensil to a non-Jew as a gift and then “borrow” it back from him for extended (indefinite) use.39 The non-Jew should acquire the utensil in a halachic sense by picking up or moving it

You just know that the Jews have a loophole for just about everything.

Why do these rules even exist to begin with?

Because God said so and that's good enough for them.  Actually, it's probably something along the lines of the Jews managed to figure out that certain hygienic/sanitary practices were a good thing and they decided to make them into rituals to make sure that everybody followed them.

If God put these rules out I doubt that same god would honor a dumb loophole like taking it apart and putting it back together.

Why do these rules even exist to begin with?
Because there are rabbis making a huge fortune out of blessing utensils.

You know, I never thought about it before, but with the requirement that every male be circumcized I bet they really clean up on brisses.  I wonder if it's customary to give the mohel a tip.

My friends, please remember Tom said this the next time you fall into the trap of engaging him, and thank you. :)

I hear he gets to keep the tip.

Apparently DRM is unpopular with Keureg stock holders as well.
