Tesla Motors opens their patents to the world. Fuck yeah.
« on: June 12, 2014, 08:47:23 PM »
Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world’s most talented engineers. We believe that applying the open source philosophy to our patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla’s position in this regard.

See full announcement here. I think this is a fantastic move, especially with today's world being haunted by patent trolls and legal disputes slowing down technological progress. Hopefully more companies will follow suit!

Importantly, this means that electric cars might actually become common now. And, you know, not burning gas is a good thing.

This is indeed wonderful news.  I wonder if it is really for the purpose of getting the best engineers (although I imagine they have quite a few great ones) or if there is some other seedy underpinning.  Nonetheless, it is a refreshing move.  Tired of hearing about patent trolls.

And yes, burning gasoline is bad.  Charging electric cars using electricity sourced from coal burning power plants is much better.

Considering pollution per unit energy, this is true. I don't know if you were being sarcastic or not.

Hey, this won't be a problem once we get SOLAR FREAKIN' ROADWAYS.

...I'm really sorry. Please, let's not make this another solar roadways thread.

Well you don't see THAT every day.  Neat. :)

Your average coal power plant is a lot more efficient at getting energy out of coal than any combustion engine is at getting energy out of gasoline/diesel.

That said, if everyone were driving electric cars the power grid wouldn't be able to handle it, so more power plants would be built, and I can guarantee instead of Nuclear (which would make sense) they would all be roaring oil or coal fired plants.

Not to mention the significantly better efficiency of electric engines.

But from nuclear and renewables...

Tesla created patents to protect their ideas. Now they have realised that no one is interested they are trying to give them away. Their patents were worth nothing. Now those same ideas are open source and they are still worth nothing. The technology they patented isn't any good and no one bought their cars.

They probably think they can get more goodwill out of sharing 'amazing environmental ideas' than they could every get out of selling it. Its not like anyone wanted to license it off them.

At Tesla, however, we felt compelled to create patents out of concern that the big car companies would copy our technology and then use their massive manufacturing, sales and marketing power to overwhelm Tesla.
If it was any good, they would never have done this. They admit they wanted the technology for themselves. So cynical.

Isn't that the same thing that happened with Netscape Navigator?  Now, we have FireFox, which is far superior.  FireFox makes millions of dollars giving away their product for free, and we get a free Internet Search Engine.  Sounds like a win/win to me.

If they don't sell cars, why are dealerships suing them for selling cars directly?

Thork, please don't assume that everyone is as cynical as you are (that's a very high standard, you know ;) ).  Tesla is, indeed, selling cars pretty much as fast as they can build them.  However, they simply overestimated the big auto manufacturer's interest in selling all electric cars.  As long as internal combustion engines are cheap and easy to build and gas is still affordable, their attempts at all electric cars will never be more than halfhearted.

Perhaps by opening up their patent portfolio, Tesla might encourage more manufacturers to enter the market now that they won't have to do all of their own R&D from scratch.

Are you suggesting that standardized charging technology would be anything but good for the industry?

If you get a slower charge rate it takes longer. That's it. But its not like mobile phones where you have a charger connection for every phone. They all run a standard 3-pin plug like you would find on a building site. Some have communication and safety add ons, but it doesn't mean they don't fit the vanilla ones.

What are you talking about? Pretty much every phone manufacturer bar one has standardised on MicroUSB for charging.

This and perhaps to have manufacturing costs go down because the producers of their parts have a larger economy to scale from.
