FOI Request
« on: February 25, 2020, 10:15:06 AM »
The society has a shop.

That shop doesn't make any money. But still, people give money for flat earth goodies. Its a service that is provided. TFES makes no money at all from it. We all understand this.

But in the interest of transparency and general interest, how much stuff gets sold? Could TFES publish a breakdown of the purchases from the shop for 2019, please?

Also, why can't you access the store from the forum menu? That's where most people spend most of their time on this site.

I think Pete mentioned that the overwhelming amount of traffic is to the wiki.

Sure. I'll put something together when I have a moment.

I'm sure we could do it. If people feel strongly about this idea one way or another, please let us know in this thread.

In fairness, that's all traffic. I suspect most regular visitors do indeed stick to the forum.

Here's a data dump with most sensitive information scrubbed out. These are orders which were completed (aka shipped out) in 2019, so they'll include a handful of orders from the very end of 2018, and may omit some orders that were shipped out in early 2020. Looks like over the year, we've had 419 orders and a total of 526 products ordered.

I was going to do more analysis and put together a few graphs, but I'm tabling that until later. While looking at this data, I've noticed that a markup of $1 was applied to some products in December. This is not something I wanted, so I'm currently trawling though the store and making sure everything is back to $0. I'll also talk to CafePress to see what happened. I'll get back to playing with pretty data soon.

Whatever happened there, I've made $4 on this. I'm rich!

All markups seem to still be at 0. Here's hoping CP can explain my newfound riches.

Here's a breakdown of quantities of items sold by month:

There appears to be some correlation between forum users (that is, visitors that Google thinks are distinct individuals who at some point visited the forum in that month) and merch sold.

The correlation between homepage visitors and merch is weaker, but plausibly still there, and the correlation between Wiki visitors and sold merch is weak at best.

Unsurprisingly, shirts are the most popular item, followed by mugs and glasses.

If you can think of any more useful data, let me know and I'll try to cobble it together.

That was far more info than i expected.

You could look at which nations are buying what if you are enjoying the graph making, but you gave us all that data already if we care enough to do it ourselves.

I didn't think we would sell anything like 600 items a year. Well go us and our little propaganda store. Very nice.  :)

Cheers for the effort Pete.

Which suggests the link to the store really should be from the forum menu too. Its forum users who will make purchases.

The forum menu is quite cluttered as it is. If we're going to add stuff to it, I'd like to see which options are the least used and remove those as well. I suspect "Help" is almost never clicked, but maybe I'm overestimating the competence of the average noob.
when you try to mock anyone while also running the flat earth society. Lol

I'm guessing the 'Banlist' could actually be a sub-menu entry under 'Members'. It is about members after all. That would free a slot up for 'Store'.

Well... Damn.
Go FES, selling that much merch.
If you are going to DebOOonK an expert then you have to at least provide a source with credentials of equal or greater relevance. Even then, it merely shows that some experts disagree with each other.
