2022 FIFA World Cup
« on: October 02, 2021, 03:17:21 PM »
The qualifying rounds are well underway for most FIFA regions for next year's World Cup in Qatar. There are a few games I'm interested in next week:
  • October 08, 2021, 06:45:00 PM — Latvia–Netherlands (Riga)
  • October 09, 2021, 01:00:00 PM — Ethiopia–South Africa (Bahir Dar)
  • October 09, 2021, 04:00:00 PM — Azerbaijan–Republic of Ireland (Baku)
  • October 09, 2021, 06:45:00 PM — Switzerland–Northern Ireland (Geneva)
Of all these teams, only Azerbaijan is already eliminated from qualifying, and the Republic of Ireland can only qualify through the playoffs.

I don't know whether I'll be able to watch all of these games online, but I'll try to if I can. Should be interesting.

Thanks for reminding me to order an Andorran flag.

Also, learn to use the [time] tag. I edited your quote to give you an example. It will automatically convert to each user's configured timezone and format.

Your shitty [time] tag doesn't account for things like British Summer Time. So now it misinforms any UK users wanting to watch the games.

It accounts for whatever time offset you have configured in your user preferences. Not my fault if you haven't updated that for summer time.

(And yes, SMF should be able to handle summer time automatically, but if I had a euro for everything SMF should do but doesn't...)

I won't be using the flawed [time] tag. That is all.

Caught some of this. Latvia got told what's what in their home stadium, courtesy of the Dutch. Score was 0–1.

South Africa and RoI both did a smashing job today. Scores were 1–3 and 0–3, respectively. A most excellent day.

Indeed, the UK has disappointed on two fronts tonight.

Switzerland 2 – 0 Northern Ireland

It's a good thing Ireland gets two teams!

Why do you have a weird obsession with Northern Ireland? Have you ever been? It's a dump.

I don't have an obsession with it, it is simply part of Ireland. In the Rugby World Cup, Ireland has one team, which I would support. In the FIFA World Cup, they have two teams, so I support both.

Why?
Because I have Irish heritage. Is it important? They're all just human beings wearing differently coloured shirts, at the end of the day.

Well you should have some reason for picking a random country. If I said "I support England and Lithuania" you'd ignore England and ask me why I supported Lithuania.

So what of this Irish heritage?

Quote from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_heritage
Cultural heritage is the legacy of tangible and intangible heritage assets of a group or society that is inherited from past generations. Not all legacies of past generations are "heritage", rather heritage is a product of selection by society.

Cultural heritage includes tangible culture (such as buildings, monuments, landscapes, books, works of art, and artifacts), intangible culture (such as folklore, traditions, language, and knowledge), and natural heritage (including culturally significant landscapes, and biodiversity).

From the list above, what have you got that is your Irish heritage?

Is this really relevant in a thread about football? If you are truly interested in my life story, feel free to create a thread about it in CN or AR, where I can shitpost at you as much as you like.

Why does the UK get to have 4 separate teams. I thought it was one nation? Or are they so desperate to have the World Cup in the aisles that they just forego their super important sovereignty in this case?

This is a decent primer, though it's obviously pre-Brexit. Just ignore the bits about how the UK is in the EU for now.
