Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world’s most talented engineers. We believe that applying the open source philosophy to our patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla’s position in this regard.

See full announcement here. I think this is a fantastic move, especially with today's world being haunted by patent trolls and legal disputes slowing down technological progress. Hopefully more companies will follow suit!

Importantly, this means that electric cars might actually become common now. And, you know, not burning gas is a good thing.

Flat Earth Media / Rory Cooper: Interesting Flat Earth animations

It would appear that Rory Cooper has been illustrating evidence of FET for quite a while now. His videos are well worth checking out.

Announcements / The Wiki needs YOU!
« on: May 03, 2014, 02:14:14 PM »
Hi everyone,

Today, I spent a good few hours patching up the holes in our Wiki (mostly recovering things from an old, old, old version of it), cutting the count of red links down to 15.

With that in mind, I would like to appeal to the members of this forum to help make this work complete. If you'd like to write a short article on one of these subjects (or, indeed, if you'd like to produce any content for the Wiki), please PM me and I'll set you up with an account.

I hope your day is great and your Earth - flat!

Announcements / The library is up and running again!
« on: May 01, 2014, 03:32:21 PM »
It is my pleasure to announce that our Flat Earth Library has now been restored, at least in its simplest form. We may be trying to improve it in the near or not-so-near future, but the content is now easily accessible for all to enjoy!

Arts & Entertainment / Bizarre toys
« on: April 25, 2014, 05:30:48 AM »
People like playing. Therefore, people like toys. They come in many varieties, some of them blander than others. Let's talk about the ones that aren't so bland.

Some time ago, I got Muphci a Duck with a Dick:

Needless to say, that worked out well. Last time I've seen it, its appendage was inside a roll of toilet paper, making for an interesting surprise for guests willing to use said paper.

Also, I want this doll:

Do you know of or own any uncommon or strange toys? Share your experiences!

Announcements / Google+ shift
« on: April 22, 2014, 01:10:14 PM »
So, due to a number of factors, we suddenly found ourselves having 3 (or more, I dunno) Google+ profiles. We have now decided to consolidate those into one, which led to a change of our official profile.

The profile we'll be using from now on is - those following other profiles may be interested in following this one. The link on our homepage has been updated to reflect this.

As usual, if anyone wants to get involved in maintaining our presence on G+, feel free to give me a shout - unless you're exceptionally untrustworthy, in which case don't.

Suggestions & Concerns / Spoiler tags
« on: March 30, 2014, 07:20:37 PM »
Also, do we have working spoiler tags here, and if not, can we get some? I don't personally care about spoilers, but others do.
I just remembered seeing this and realised we don't have a thread about that here.

I have a solution that's almost ready for deployment. What do people think about this format?

A spoiler by default appears as black text on black background. If you have JavaScript enabled (most users), you can uncover it by clicking on the spoiler. Alternatively (and this will work without JavaScript too), you can highlight the relevant portion of the text.

I'm not quite certain how well this would work on mobile devices [EDIT: Apparently it works perfectly fine. I can tap the spoiler to show/hide it], but if people like the idea, I could probably get this finished soon.

It seems that the world's favorite dictator's haircut, known as the Chinese smuggler haircut, is now going to be enforced by the fashion police. Literally. They already had a list of approved hair styles and a TV show to name and shame those who don't comply, but now things are getting entirely too silly... or are they?

There is some debate regarding the authenticity of this story. Some media suggest that it's very unlikely, while others seem to state it as factual. Some talk about all men having to follow the new rules, others say it's only aimed at students.

Regardless of who is right, this story is a great example of Poe's Law in action. North Korea is so controversial in its policies that it's basically impossible to be sure one way or another.

Well done, KJU, for confusing the international media so hard. Well done indeed!

This topic has been moved to Flat Earth General at Tom Bishop's request.

Announcements / Parsifal will be less active for a while
« on: January 01, 2014, 06:36:17 PM »
Parsifal is now on his way to the very other end of Australia to attend a conference. As such, you can expect him to be much less active for about 3 weeks. This should not cause any major disruptions, but it does mean we may be a bit slower to implement changes for a while.

Announcements / New BBCode
« on: December 30, 2013, 03:06:20 AM »

We've implemented the following new tags for your convenience:
  • An [audio] tag, allowing you to embed audio files/streams into posts.

    [audio][/audio] now translates to:

  • A similar [video] tag for video streams.

    [video][/video] now translates to:

Both of these tags use HTML5 features, which are technically not yet a standard. Your mileage with these tags may vary, but my limited testing indicates that they should work for most browsers already.

As an addition, I've added a button for the already-existent [abbr] tag, since not many people seem to be aware of its existence (not surprising, seeing how there's no indication of it anywhere). To bring you up to speed with the syntax:

[abbr="Flat Earth Society"]FES[/abbr] becomes FES.

Flat Earth Media / Views of the Earth - from the Library of Congress
« on: December 24, 2013, 01:34:09 PM »

An interesting exhibition displaying many historical views of the Earth, be that flat or round. Potentially useful for wiki articles because look at all these pretty pictures!

Flat Earth Media / Flat Earth and the Qur'an
« on: December 24, 2013, 01:30:39 PM »
An interesting resource outlining the verses of the Koran implying that the Earth is flat. Written from an obviously RET-biased perspective, but what else can we expect, really?

Flat Earth Projects / Zetetic Council election results - December 2013
« on: December 21, 2013, 08:49:24 PM »
Right, in order to make this as undisruptive as possible, we'll follow the same general rules as in the previous election. Vote for 3 or less candidates. The poll will be open for 7 days, and only members who are registered at the time of writing (excluding alts and accounts with <5 posts) are allowed to vote.

Results will not be visible to anyone until the poll has expired. Users are allowed to change their vote at any time before the poll expires. Write-ins are allowed - just PM me if you need it done.

Science & Alternative Science / RET riddle
« on: December 19, 2013, 07:36:07 AM »
Riddle me this, FES:

What direction are you traveling in definitively if you are traveling towards the North Pole from any given point?

Pretty much just a reminder to myself to fix this, unless Parsifal beats me to it again >o<

Announcements / New logo!

"Flat Earth Society logo"

I am incredibly pleased to announce that our forum now has a logo of its own, courtesy of Blanko. Everyone owes Blanko a drink, or something. Truly this is a milestone for our forum!

This logo has been licenced under CC BY-SA 4.0

Technology & Information / My phone has been shipped!
« on: December 02, 2013, 09:18:04 PM »
To those that haven't seen my thread on .org before it disappeared: I ordered a Chinese off-brand phone whose specs seem ridiculously good for the price. Bit of an experiment on my part, might work out extremely well, or it might be the worst decision of my life.

Anyway, it's been shipped. They even provided a picture of my package. Professionalism, and all that.
