How do these practically zombified 70-80 year olds conduct political business? It's something I've been wondering for a long time. When my grandmother was 75, she was getting too old to do even basic tasks like cooking meals. Now we have mfs in office in the US that are 80+. How do they even travel the world, talk to high ranking officials in other countries and still do their duties that 40-50 year olds would probably get winded by? Are they just like avatars with aides that do literally everything for them behind the scenes? Maybe we should get some younger peeps in there who are a lot less likely to go into cardiac arrest at any moment.

So, Valve has finally come up with some decent hardware. I reserved one the day they were open for preorders, and then canceled it a few weeks later because I started to worry that if a joystick broke it would render the entire Deck useless. Now that people have been getting them and posting repair/modification videos, it turns out they are very repairable. And now I regret canceling my preorder because the queue to get one is months long. Does anyone have one?

I started delivering for DoorDash last week in my free time. It started out as a thing to try for fun, but I realized I can make some decent side cash. The app you use is like playing a video game and completing quests. You start out "looking for orders", and when one pops up it shows you the distance you'll have to travel, and a big, bold number that is the amount of money you'll make on the order. You can decline the order if it's not enough money for the distance. As far as I know, there's no penalty for declining.

Anyway, today I did a single order worth $20. I only had to drive a little over 5 miles to complete it. I had another order where some Chinese lady yelled at me because the restaurant got her order wrong. However, it was sealed and we aren't allowed to open orders to check if they are correct in that case.

Delivering to apartments is really shitty, especially if the orderer doesn't add a good description of where they are in the complex.

Delivering WingStop orders is really shitty too. The restaurant usually takes forever to make the order, they come in giant oily bags, and the smell of the wings is so strong my car just smells like shitty wing seasoning permanently now.

Today, I made $22/hour after taking gas into account. I also got two free sodas.

I have to turn this in for a class, and I just wanted to see if any wizards here could give it a quick once-over. I'd feel bad if you spent a long time on it, so please don't do that. But it is probably a very simple script anyway. Although, it took me a good 5 hours to do. The individual lines are no problem. I understand what they do just fine on their own, but I'm having trouble understanding switches and how the entire thing works as a whole. I ran it in ISE and it seems to work, although probably in a ghetto as hell way.

Considering getting one. I already know I'd use: Spotify, answering texts, calls, calc, heartbeat thing, calories burned, sleep tracking, weather/time, navigation, NFC pay. Basically I want to test using only the smartwatch and not needing to bring my phone everywhere.

Technology & Information / I need me more terabytes

I have quite a lot of data that I need to store and never lose, so I wanted to ask you computer peeps what kind of hard drive to use. I plan on using a 3-tier backup system, or at least that's I'm calling it. I store all of my immediately necessary data on one of these. I'm using a larger 4TB WD Blue HDD for longer term storage that is connected to my PC. But, I'd also like a very reliable HDD that I can store everything on, make periodic backups to, and mostly leave it unplugged as a sort of cold storage option. I'd like to avoid an NAS setup because that would mean upgrading the network in my house with a switch and I don't want to go to the trouble. I looked up some cloud storage plans, but I'd be spending $30 a month or more ad infinitum, so I'd like to avoid that too. Basically, I'm just looking for the most reliable HDD you can get.

Do any of you still have a dedicated camera? I use my Sony a6100 quite often. The image quality is very good for the price, it shoots 11 FPS in RAW format, and is super compact.

After hearing ChrisTP worked on the game, it inspired me to make a thread for it. It's one of my top 5 games of all time. Some of you may have heard of it, and fewer have probably played it. It's, essentially, a sandbox, ship to ship and first person PvP game with light PvE elements. You make your pirate, and get thrown into a sandbox world where you try to collect treasure for various trading companies who will pay you in gold coins and doubloons which you can then use to buy cosmetic items. It's somewhat unique for an online RPG-type game in that progression is cosmetic only. The character you start with will be just as effective in battle as a character that has been played since release, player skill being equal.

One of the end-game activities is to reach "pirate legend" status, which opens a new set of voyages and cosmetic items. I played the beta and a few months into release, but it was light on content then so I stopped for a long time and never reached pirate legend. I've since picked it up again and have been playing constantly for a couple months, and I am now only a couple reputation levels away from pirate legend. They've added quite a few new features and it's a more complete game now. Has anyone else played, or is anyone interested in playing? I can't give you in-game items, but I can help you get treasure and complete voyages.

Uh oh. It looks like the veneer was just washed off Robert’s agenda. And I’d venture to say all the other Democrats had a similar reaction. Now, with a second shooting occurring only an hour or so ago in Ohio, they’ll probably go full tilt with gun control in their campaigns. I don’t think they’ll be able to take down the 2nd Amendment, but I can see most blue states banning rifle ammo over the course of the next couple of years.

Welcome to yet another new tech purchase advice thread.

I'm getting a new laptop. I'm looking at the most recent MacBook Air and the Thinkpad X1 Carbon (base model). I'm really interested in the opinions of people who already have variants of the Thinkpad since I've never owned a modern one before. How would it compare to the MacBook air? I've never actually seen an X1 in person since they seem to be missing from every tech showroom I've been to. I'm also curious about the build quality of recent, Lenovo made Thinkpads. I have an old IBM Thinkpad in the garage that is heavy enough and sturdy enough to murder someone with, but I've heard the build quality has somewhat declined since Lenovo took over.

With Apple's recent price gouging shenanigans, I'm leaning towards the X1. It has ports for days, a sexy af carbon fiber frame, and that jet black matte finish that will make any nerd lift his skirt in a hot second. I'll also be doing plenty of virtualization, so the quad core i5 would be spicy as fuck compared to the dual core i5 on the Air. Although, the idea of having a Windows based laptop kind of makes me cringe. I'm worried about battery optimization and heat dissipation mostly. What do you computer dudes think?

One final note: I probably wouldn't install a different OS on the Thinkpad.

I started playing this modern Runescape style MMO a couple weeks ago and now I can’t stop. It has full loot pvp, so if you die in an endgame zone other players who are not part of your alliance can take your gear and stowed items. It sounds harsh, but you can avoid dying a lot of the time if you know how to play. That constant threat of being ganked makes the game extremely thrilling.

It’s going free to play on April 10, but if anyone wants to try it immediately I can send you a 7 day trial key.

I am more authoritarian than libertarian, libertarianism is a meme that relies on everyone holding hands and getting along.

I'm also in favour of government regulations on the free market so I think it placed me fairly.

Why is SETI wasting time and money looking for aliens in the radio spectrum? Is it just a front to buy time until a better technology comes around (like Laser Seti) so they don't get put on the chopping block? Because the only way we'd ever pick up an alien radio transmission is if it was a massively boosted signal aimed right at us. And that doesn't seem like it will ever happen unless aliens knew we were capable of receiving it, or knew that there was intelligent life here at all. Because an errant radio transmission from one of their tv shows or military things would be indistinguishable from background noise by the time it got to us unless they were within dozens of light years. Aliens could be within 100-500 light years and we would probably never even know it.
