Light Pollution and Viewing The Milky Way Galaxy
« on: October 28, 2016, 05:56:05 AM »
I suck at math and never understood majority of things.  If the earth is flat then what is the explanation of Light Pollution ?

If I travel 3 1/2 hours north of Las Vegas the earth curves and cancels out the light pollution and I can not see the city lights, giving me the ability to see a solid dark sky and the most beautiful view of the Milky Way Galaxy.  There are a few sites when searching around for Dark Sky Finder, and there are not many places left to get a perfect dark sky in the USA.   I looked at England and they have horrible spots compared to Nevada.  England can view the Milky Way, but not as good as spots in Nevada.

The last place I visited was over 7,000 feet elevation and can see over mountains, but no city lights of Las Vegas and it's super bright and that is why I have to travel 3 1/2 hours away from the city in middle of no where.

3 1/2 hours isn't a distance. Where were you, specifically, and how far from Vegas?

I don't know where you live, Junker; maybe you don't know that in America (perhaps specific to the American West?) it is not uncommon to express distances in terms of how long it takes to drive there.  Or maybe you DO know that and are being unnecessarily pedantic.

In either case, do you have anything to contribute regarding the OP's actual question?  Why does light pollution not propagate further?

Ok. You proven you are unworthy to unignored. You proven it was a bad idea to unignore you. and it was for me a disgusting experience...Now you are going to place where you deserved and accustomed.

I live in Las Vegas, so this claim was of interest to me. No one I know expresses distances in time units, unless it is something local or someone asking how long it takes to get to LA or San Diego. I grew up here and spent time all over the "American West" and have made the drive from here to northern Nevada more than a dozen times.

Yes, actually. I wanted to know where he was, because I've likely been there. I can explain the light pollution aspect shortly, I am simply looking to verify OP's claims.

Interesting.  I've lived in Washington and Oregon for years, and up here we often do.  "I'm two hours from Portland", that sort of thing.

Anyway, sorry to derail, I'll stay on topic now.

I did not think of that way and interesting, normally people do and don't calculate time.  I'm 45 minutes off and according to Microsoft Map Point program it's 186 Miles and ETA of 2hr and 44min

It's not straight north but rather a curve ball around Nellis / Area 51 going slightly around to the left and then back to the north.

The map needs to be zoomed in, but it's Highway 266 / Westguard Pass , and small abandoned town called Lida in Nevada.   Last time I was in this area at night I did see a series of 3 airplanes 1 by 1 behind eachother in a row land into Area 51 from the high elevation point

This map alone should be proof the earth is not flat.  Even if you are at a high elevation point the earth curves canceling out the city lights

The heavier the population, the more light there is.  Nevada is the most mountainous state - more mountains than any other state.  Many people think Colorado has the most mountains, but it's Nevada.  So you can be very high up in the air and as the earth curves it cancels out the light.
