Here's a question. If a plane flies due north from the equator, it has a sideways speed of about 1000 mph just from the rotational speed of the earth. As is flies north, the circumference of the earth shrinks so the sideways speed drops. If it made it to the north pole, the earth is moving zero mph sideways...there is no sideways for it to go. So as the equator
- plane flies north, does it keep its sideways speed of 1000? Wouldnt the plane drift further east as it flew north because it has a higher sideways speed than the shrinking earth beneath it? Do planes correct for this be veering to the west? How does this work?
