Flat Earth Theory / Long Way Round
« on: August 31, 2018, 02:44:02 PM »
Hey Y'all,

Anyone here watch the TV show 'Long Way Round'? A TV show where two people go around the world from London to New York the wrong way. How would this be possible on a flat Earth?

Try this out. www.thetruesize.com

It shows how the size changes based on the location on the flat map.

Genius! This proves the point very nicely!

The scale does change. I was able to use the 2d non globe map and zoom into Greenland and see the scale much smaller than when i zoomed into Africa.

This is kind of my point. If Earth is flat, and Google Maps can be trusted as a source of getting people from A to B, then it can't change. I am hoping to get some sort of answer as to how this could be if we are to assume the Earth is flat

unfortunately i dont think there is an answer to your question.  there is no official/verified flat earth map, so if you are going to compare the sizes you are left to round earth sources, so we wont agree with that. what further makes it more difficult is that its not a very populated area in the sense of roads/travel and being able identify distance by means of car time, airplane travel times from one side to the other, etc.

So are you saying that we don't know how big Greenland is compared to Africa?

Do we not know that Greenland is much, much smaller, regardless of the Earth shape you believe in?

What about Norway and Samalia? (greenland is the most obvious example, but there are many northern countries that look too large when compared to countries or other areas near the equator)

Is there anyone here with friends that live abroad?

Could you not just have a phone call with your foreign friend when the sun disappears over the horizon and ask them what they see? If the Earth is round, then surely they would see that the sun is still up, I don't understand how this could ever work on a flat Earth

Hey everyone,

So, I am pretty sure that everyone here has agreed at some point that Google Maps works. You can select a and b and get between them using your transportation of choice.

Google have recently changed their web version of maps to a globe. I am not saying the Earth is a globe because Google says so, so please read on...

On Google's flat version of maps, it shows that Greenland is huge. Like really huge. on their flat version (still available on Android) Greenland is almost the same size as Africa. On their new version of web maps, Greenland is dwarfed by Africa.

As I understand it, this is an issue with transposing round Earth to a flat surface. The way Google chose to do this was to have a scale that changed depending on where you were looking on the map at the time, therefore making things further from the equator appear bigger than they are.

So, why am I posting this? Good question sir! I wanted to find out how it is possible that, assuming the Earth is flat, Greenland appears to be as big as Africa when the scale could not possibly change.

If scale changes then it shows that there is a difference in curvature.

Please note that I am not trying to start an argument here, I am trying to understand. This is just something that has triggered my interest lately.

I can't provide numbers, but the answer is no. Even if the earth is flat, IR imagery won't penetrate that much atmosphere/atmolayer to be able to "see" thousands of miles.

That's a shame. If it could that could have put an end to all this and, as a RETer, my beliefs would finally be proven right or wrong without a doubt to anyone.

Random question RE IR photography... How far could the IR camera this guy has theoretically "see"?

Could you, for example, see France from Boston?

Or, see Everest from basically anywhere, like on top of the Empire State building or something?

Flat Earth Community / Re: Is FET Dangerous?
« on: August 03, 2018, 12:44:07 PM »
I don't see that it is dangerous at all.

Being someone who lives life according believing in the round earth theory, I don't see any harm in a community of people trying to prove otherwise.

It doesn't really affect anything in my life, or their own, members of their family etc. if they believe the Earth is flat (for the sake of this point, I am not saying that it is or is not flat), just like it doesn't really affect them if I believe the Earth is round.

When this does become a problem is when you get idiots who seem to think it is right to abuse others, either physically or mentally, because their view of something that is relatively trivial, differs from their own.

(I firmly believe that the stuff I have said above should also adhere to religion, country of birth, colour of skin, age, etc.)

As another user has put, there have been "studies" into other topics, like vaccinations, that were completely untrue but pushed nonetheless. Believing in these is dangerous as these can actually have an affect on a person's health, and worse than that the affect is on someone else's life because they are too young to be able to make their own informed choice.

In a nutshell, no, not dangerous. Even if it turns out that I am wrong and things like GPS and mobile phone satellites are faked and actually work through someway on Earth, then it still does not make a difference to my life. They still work, just not in the way I am told they work

Flat Earth Community / Re: What FE Experiment would you believe?
« on: July 17, 2018, 02:22:36 PM »
Show me the ice wall. There are many people who have made to to and from the South Pole, which, if I understand it correctly according to FET, supposedly is a giant ice wall that can't climb.
Again, what would convince you of that?

Or are you convinced now?

I am not just asking you what you want proof of, I am asking for for what you would actually want to receive in order to believe it. 'Show me the ice wall!' Great, HOW? Do you want a photo? A billion photos? Do you want to be given an all-expenses-paid flight to it, or around it? What do you want?
I get seriously tired of how much you people want me to repeat myself.

Fair point!

I would like to see the ice wall that supposedly surrounds the earth. The picture you have shown quite clearly has an ending. It is entirely possible that this is a wall that surrounds the entire Earth, but if the Earth was flat, and that wall did surround the entirety of it, then you would be able to see it in the distance behind the bit that sticks out. You cannot.

However, as I am sure you can agree, and which adds to your point, you can frame a picture how you want.

I guess my main problem is that there have been people who have crossed the South Pole, which apparently does not exist.

So, to answer your original question in a better way than I tried to before (again, sorry about that)

I would like to see footage of someone flying over this ice wall and continue straight.

If FE is true, there is either an infinite sea of ice, or they would fall off the edge. If RE is true, they would appear on the opposite side of the Earth facing north.

I believe there is a flight that is going around the Earth via both the North and South Poles that someone has posted on here before. Maybe if a FEer could get on that flight (there are already a bunch of REers on there) we could prove to them that the Earth is round

What would also be nice is if you all agreed on what FE actually looks like. You have provided a map, then told us this is not the flat earth that you believe in. There are so many different FE models that it is impossible to know what is true according to FE

Flat Earth Theory / Re: Full moon impossible?
« on: July 04, 2018, 10:49:32 AM »
According to that same link:
"The lunar phases vary cyclically according to the changing geometry of the Moon and Sun, which are constantly wobbling up and down and exchange altitudes as they rotate around the North Pole."

So, with this in mind, how does it get to be night in the North Pole? They have months of it on end.

If I am understanding this right, then the north pole, being the apparent centre, will always be in daylight
