Title: Another person that just has a couple questions just because I'm curious. Thanks
Post by: justbrowsin on February 16, 2018, 05:01:18 AM
-Why would organizations like SpaceX and Nasa want to perpetuate the idea that the Earth is round? What would they gain?
-Why is Mars round and Earth flat? Why are they different? Shouldn't all planets be the same shape?
-What happens if you keep going forward for a long time? Wouldn't you fall off the planet since the Earth is disk?
-(related to the last question) What about all the times that people have kept going in the same direction for a long time and have ended up where they started.

I'm just asking because these are questions that I've been asking myself about the ideas of Flat Earthers. Not trying to shun or refute. Thanks in advance!

They don't. https://wiki.tfes.org/The_Conspiracy

Shouldn't all planets be the same shape?
The Earth is not a planet. But no, the argument of "All these things are of one shape, so why should another thing be different?" is not a strong one by itself.

What happens if you keep going forward for a long time? Wouldn't you fall off the planet since the Earth is disk?
Thanks to the extremely inhospitable conditions beyond the Ice Wall, you'd die much sooner than it would take you to establish whether or not there even is an edge.

What about all the times that people have kept going in the same direction for a long time and have ended up where they started.
Regardless of the shape of the Earth, they haven't kept going in the same direction. On a Round Earth, they'd have to follow the Earth's curvature, otherwise they'd simply waltz off into space. Identically, on a Flat Earth, circumnavigation is achieved by travelling in a circular pattern. https://faq.tfes.org/

Except a circumnavigation via both Poles has been done.

http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/first-circumnavigation-via-both-poles-surface

That would not be possible on a flat earth.

You can call that fake of course but that isn't really an argument unless you have evidence it was faked, you could do that about anything otherwise.

They are using word smithing in that article like lawyers and judges use.

cir·cum··nav·i·ga·tion
ˌsərkəmˌnaviˈɡāSH(ə)n/
noun
noun: circumnavigation; plural noun: circumnavigations

the action or process of sailing or otherwise traveling all the way around something, especially the world.
"he completed the fastest solo circumnavigation in a small vessel"
the action of going around or avoiding an obstacle.
"our leisurely circumnavigation of the rocks"
the action of avoiding something difficult or unpleasant.

You see it?
Circumnavigation = the action of going around or avoiding an obstacle and the action of avoiding something difficult or unpleasant.

They spelt it out to the public but the public misunderstood the meaning of the word.

Bill Clinton ""It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is."

One more warning for low-content posting in the upper fora. Next one is a 3-day ban.
