Title: Carpenter's Proofs- Earth cut in half???

In William Carpenter's "One Hundred Proofs the Earth is Not a Globe", #19 reads "Every man in his senses goes the most reasonable way to work to do a thing. Now, astronomers... while they are telling us that Earth is a globe, are cutting off the upper half of this suppositious globe in their books, and, in this way, forming the level surface on which they describe man as living and moving! ..." Does anyone know what this is referring to?

I believe he is referring to how the celestial sphere appears in the sky.

A planetarium is the model of the sphere over a flat surface.
