A few years ago, I lived in St. Joseph, Michigan right on the other side of Lake Michigan to Chicago.

In the clear days and evenings standing on Silver Beach and even some of the sand dunes, the upper portions of the tallest buildings and skyscrapers in Chicago can be seen, but not the bases, due to Earth's curavture.

Lower level buildings in Chicago like the Navy Pier and the old Meigs Field are also not really visible from St. Joseph, also due to the Earth's curvature.
