Title: The new "Family Jewels"

I think it's a neat idea.

It is hardly new lord dave.

People have been doing that and putting ashes into fireworks and I even saw a family turn their relative into energy, store him on a battery and powered a little light bulb in some kind of memorial thing.

This story seems to pop up every few months or so. It's not something I'd ever want to do (I'd feel strange with a family member hanging on my finger or around my neck), but if it helps people with closure or remembering their loved ones, right on.

It was in America somewhere. They are a very strange nation.

It could be worse. In Vienna a crematorium uses the power to heat their offices.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/16/undertakers-cematorium-heat_n_809284.html
Another has approval to use the power to heat the local pool.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/9101874/Minister-praises-plan-to-heat-swimming-pool-from-fires-of-crematorium.html

I can just see it. Mmmm, getting cold in here. Chuck another corpse on the fire.

That sounds preferable to having the energy go to waste.

Yeah, I'm really not too disturbed by the idea.

But you're a sicko. I think most people would be pretty unhappy that grandma is being melted to keep a radiator warm.

But Grandma would want me to be warm.  Why else would she send sweaters every Christmas?  :'(

Would they prefer zombie grandma instead?

She's already dead. Her body means nothing. And I think it would be kinda neat if my body were used as energy.

I still think the "turn body into tree" thing is the best so far. Aside from the inevitable emotional impact if the tree dies, has to be removed, etc..

They come with pine trees, but I'd rather be an oak tree. Oak trees are cool.

How medieval this would be if they had entire graveyards like this.

"The Forest of the Dead" sounds like some location straight out of an RPG.

But why? It's just a body at that point. There is nothing to be gained from keeping a corpse around or just chucking it in the ground in a wooden box. I'd rather I was actually useful post-death than not.

I want to be placed on a burning longboat on the ocean.

I want to donate my organs after death, or for science if they're no good. I don't want there to be enough of my body left to burn/ bury.

I don't actually care what they do to my body after I die, as long as they don't give me a Christian burial. It seems to be the norm even among non-religious for some reason. But the boat thing would be ideal, albeit a tad unrealistic.

It would probably be cheaper to burn you on a long boat than to bury you like everyone else.

I think the issue is more that there might be laws against launching a burning boat carrying a corpse... maybe.

Unless it's international waters.

And who would build a viking longboat just to burn it up?

Having to get to international waters kind of kills the cost-effectiveness don't you think?

Just let me get some 2x4s and a hatchet. I'm sure I could make you some sort of boat-ish thing to burn on.

This is what it needs to look like.

That shit's hard to build.  Why not use one of the ships in the viking ship museum in Oslo?

You could ask them politely, but they would still say no.

Maybe they could just green screen your funeral and then just quietly turn you into electricity when no one is looking?

Those links talk about heat, and you talk about electricity.

Below is a link explaining how heat from burning corpses can be turned into electricity.

How does using the heat from a burning corpse to produce electricity equal to "turning a corpse into electricity"?

It seems you didn't read my second link. That may have helped you realise that this discussion is nothing to do with semantics of English and that I'd probably join a thread on that if it were interesting to me.

Technically, they are not turning burning bodies into electricity.  They are reclaiming some of the energy they used to turn the corps into ash.  Burning a corps is not like burning coal.  It is more like burning a steak on your stove top.
