Flat Earth Projects / Re: Ratification of the FES Constitution
« on: September 19, 2014, 02:28:07 AM »
No, I just haven't been very active lately.  I'm working ten hour days.  The last thing I want to do when I get home is anything that requires heavy thought.  I considered reviewing the Constitution and giving an opinion and will happily do so if you'd like (tomorrow or maybe Saturday) but I think it would be a waste because I'd like to resign from the Zetetic Council if you please.

I heartily nominate Excelsior John to take my place.  He clearly has "it".

In fact, he was so shameless about it that he might well be called the father of modern day propaganda

Have you ever read The Divine Comedy?  Dante was at the propaganda game long before Shakespeare.  In fact I would imagine propaganda has been around almost as long as language itself, and aside from better printing techniques and a deeper understanding of human nature I doubt it's changed all that much over all that time.

I'm reading Catch-22 right now.  I had heard it was funny.  I didn't expect it to be this funny.

It's great, I'm definitely going to watch it all.  My one main issue with it so far - and yes, I know that this is a really original criticism and I'm literally so brave for pointing it out - is the wife, Skyler.  It's not because I'm sexist and I can't stand to see a strong female character who challenges her husband or whatever accusation it is that the actress herself has made; it's because she's an incredibly unlikable character with nothing interesting or enjoyable to her.  Any time she appears onscreen, the smile drops right off my face, because I know it's just going to be another killjoy moment.

I felt that way about Marie (Hank's wife).  I was pretty much indifferent to Skyler for a long time.

Okay, well I'm sure they had a reason.  Maybe they didn't want future generations to look at the title, recognize that it's what Tolkein called the original story, and assume that they would have actually turned such a massive tome into a single movie.  I know such a scenario seems far-fetched but people can be dumb like that.

What an ungainly, awkward title.  Who thought that was a good idea?

Surely "The Battle of the Five Armies" is exactly the right subtitle for the next Hobbit movie?  What else were they going to call it?

"The Hobbit: The Finale"?
"The Hobbit: Back to the Shire"?
"The Hobbit: What a Long Strange Trip It's Been"?
"The Hobbit: Endgame"?

Er...

"The Hobbit: There and Back Again"

Oh, that would have been pretty good.

In all seriousness I still like the title.  I think it's catchier than Saddam gives it credit for and perfectly embodies the main story of the movie.  And even if it is a bit unwieldy, maybe that's even appropriate on a meta level for what they've done with the movies.

I will for sure listen soon. I like Sigur Rós so you don't need to worry about that deterring me. :P

Yeah, I realize now how presumptious that was.  Obviously a lot of people like them or else they wouldn't be as popular as they are (I know, Captain Obvious), but I could never get around that falsetto.  He sounds like an elf to me, and the fact that he might as well be singing in an elf language really doesn't help, but maybe that's part of their attraction for some people.  I know that some of the music, minus the singing, is truly awesome.  And I don't usually have a problem with sometimes annoying singing (ie Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Dan Deacon when he does that weird chipmunk thing) but I guess... I don't know, I draw the line at elves.

And I know my list is so fucked-up. There's way too much and I underestimated how slowly I'd progress. I've been listening out of order a lot lately and I'm starting to think that's the way it's going to go, where I'll mainly be listening based on how interested I am. I'll still definitely try to fit in ones I'm not interested in, since otherwise I wouldn't be stepping out of my comfort zone (which was the whole point of this thread), but yeah, I'd rather go out of order and get new things than not listen to new things at all.

That makes sense.  I did notice when I was looking back at the list that you've veered from the script somewhat.  I think it's pretty impressive that you've stuck with this for as long as you have, even if it has been somewhat intermittent.

And I will never listen on YouTube but I will find it :]

lol, it was just a suggestion to hear it for free.  I heard my first Dandelion War song on a free Deep Elm Records compilation on Amazon called Postrockology.  It was "Drifters" and it remains my favorite song by them, and as a bonus most of the compilation is actually pretty good.  But I know you'd rather listen to the whole thing and in this case that's fully justified as one of the things I love about the album as a whole is the way it hangs together.  I bought a digital copy of the album from Amazon.  If you are the type to torrent your music instead go for it.

Well, speaking of post-rock, I feel compelled to recommend the most amazing album I've heard in a while: We Were Always Loyal to Lost Causes by The Dandelion War.  The fact that you have almost certainly never heard of these guys is one of the great tragedies of the new millennium.  They are brilliant.  The lead singer usually (but not always) uses a falsetto, and for that reason I've seen them compared to Sigur Ros and My Morning Jacket, but I would seriously recommend not letting that deter you because his use of the falsetto is not nearly as annoying as that of Sigur Ros (I'm not familiar enough with My Morning Jacket to make the comparison, but from based on what I have heard by them the comparison with them is much more apt than that with Sigur Ros).  The title of the album might be familiar to you if you've read Ulysses; I didn't realize that it came from that until I reread Ulysses a couple months ago, and knowing that shed some light for me as to what they were going for with the album's only entirely instrumental track, "Bloom".  For me, the standout tracks are "Drifters", "1848", "The Devil's Black Wool", and the epic closer "Stone Castles", but really every song is a gem.

I've been hesitant to recommend anything new lately because you will probably never get around to hearing it if you continue with this the way you have; there's just too much you haven't listened to yet.

Please make this album a priority.  I know that's a lot to ask and that the request will probably fall on deaf ears, but I'm kind of tired of being the only person I know who's ever heard of these guys.  I just really believe based on your tastes that you will really dig this one.  The album is available for free to listen to in its entirety on Youtube so I'd recommend trying it out there.

I so rarely gush about music; that fact alone should make you realize how high the esteem I have for this one is.  Listen to it.

Also, please add Congratulations by MGMT.  I recommended that one a long time ago and it's not on the list.  :(

"Jungleland" is one of my all-time favorite songs.

They should just make a movie titled Venom with a legitimate back story for it. Venom is the most popular Spiderman villain, why does Sony not seem to understand this?

Well, they do.  Otherwise they wouldn't include him in their movies.  They just don't care what geeky fanboys like you think because your opinion doesn't matter to them.  They are going to make the movie that they think the public at large wants to see and you geeky fanboys make up such a small part of that wider audience who cares what you think?

But yeah, I think a Venom movie would be an excellent idea and I think it would be very successful if they did it right (like getting the right person to play Eddie Brock, Christ but Topher Grace was so horribly miscast).

Currently reading "Sasha Grey-Grand Theft Anal 11" I know they made it into a film but I wanted to read the book first.

Meh, by 7 or 8 it was obvious they had run out of ideas.

Have you seen the video for the Pharrell parody "Tacky"?  It has a lot of funny people in it.

I have a question. Who elected Daniel?

Presidents are elected by their constituents.

Is that how it works in the business world?  You are treating the FES like it's a democratic nation and, hello, it's not.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Wikipedia
« on: July 18, 2014, 02:48:11 AM »
However, whilst the members may have genuine issues with Daniel's running of the site, Daniel does not have issues with the members at large. He has very specific issues of trust with both you and Parsifal, and (frankly) for very understandable reasons. It is simply not reasonable to say "I do not see how personalities come into play here". They very obviously do, and you need to accept and acknowledge that it is a factor. Pretending otherwise is simply not tenable.

I haven't addressed this thread yet (frankly I haven't addressed much here of importance lately at all, hoo hoo) but as someone who really hasn't taken a particular side on this issue and continues to enjoy the benefits of both forums, albeit on more of a part-time basis lately, I feel like I'm in a position to address this particular argument in a fair, balanced, and unbiased way.  It may very well be that Parsifal and PP started this forum in the first place because they don't like Daniel on a personal level, as a kind of "take that"; I don't pretend to be able to read their minds or divine their intentions.  However, they didn't convince the majority of the forum's members to move based on such a personality clash.  In the last couple years there have been some very real, very legitimate issues with the way the forum has been run that have affected all of us.  I am convinced it was entirely the way the forum has been run by its administration that led to the schism.

There was a time, long ago, that despite Daniel's general absence in any personal capacity on the forums I nonetheless felt like he cared about it, and the site ran well.  That time is long gone.  Maybe he got bored with it.  I doubt many people would blame him; look at all the people who have come, stayed a long time, made a lot of useful contributions, and then disappeared.  But whatever the case may be Daniel showed nothing but apathy toward the forum for a long time, and if he now regrets his lack of involvement and interest in promoting the Society and the forums so be it, but I don't think anybody can be blamed for regarding it as being maybe a bit too little, too late.  I honestly don't even think he was even aware of the split until quite some time after it actually took place.  I may be wrong about that so please don't rake me over the coals over it.

Frankly I myself was upset with how things were being handled at the time and I felt JD was being something of a condescending prick when he tried to address it.  He has since apologized, and I accepted the apology, but it still goes to show how deep the problems over there were/are.

I would love to see a reconciliation but the fact is that theflatearthsociety.org is still a bit of a mess and it needs cleaning up, and Parsifal is absolutely correct that if Daniel wants to fix things, he's going to have to relinquish a little control.  Not to Parsifal or PP, mind you; given their histories on the old site it would probably be insane for him to even consider it.  But, somebody who genuinely cares about the Society, is willing to be a constant presence, and knows what he is doing.  I nominate Thork (lol j/k aren't I hilarious?).

Anyway, the Wikipedia thing is just stupid and whoever did it should feel ashamed of themselves.  In fact they must or else they would have owned up to it and either apologized or tried to defend themselves.  I doubt it was PP or Parsifal, but I am also quite sure it wasn't just some noob passing through.

But sorry, I really have to say that I don't think that most of the members who now post here (such as it is, it's a wasteland here) and don't post there left the other site due to any kind of clash of personalities.  I think it's a lot deeper and more legitimate than that.  At this point I think that to try to put the blame on such a thing to any degree is simply counter-productive, unnecessary, and frankly unfair.  Just my two cents.

I don't know.  Arya's spiteful.  She's vindictive.  I thought it fit well with her character that she let the Hound suffer rather than give him mercy.

On another note, I downloaded Roges on my Kindle, obviously mostly for the new George RR Martin "story", and what a disappointment that was.  It reads more like a history book than a real story, and it's not even really about the "rogue" (Daemon Targaryen) that would make its inclusion in this collection make sense, it's more about his brother (Viserys, obviously not Dany's brother) and the Targaeryans of the era as a whole, and it expressly leaves a lot of what was supposed to make Daemon interesting out.  And worst of all, if I read right it's an excerpt of that big history of Westeros Martin has coming out later this year, so buying it solely for new George RR Martin is entirely unnecessary if you intend to get that book.  It was also way too short.  Even the introduction Martin wrote for the book is lazy.  If it weren't for the new Gaiman and Lansdale stories that are also in it I would declare it a complete waste of money.

Was the Joe Abercrombie story any good?

I haven't read it.  I'm in the middle of something else now but I'll let you know.

Considering two of its main characters were played by well-known comedians, that was a deeply disturbing movie.

I never perceived an increase in brooding in books 4&5. An increase in boring chapters that don't really go anywhere, sure, but not brooding.

Yeah, that was a new idea to me, too.  I'll agree that Cersei's out-of-nowhere motivation for hating Tyrion was stupid, and maybe Dany spent a little too much time regretting the way things had gone after all the things she had done (but I kind of love her character for that too).  Other than that I really don't see it.

What's weird to me about the way Martin suddenly seemed to be drawing out the story is that it really wasn't necessary for him to do so.  It was supposed to be, what, four books at first?  He was the one who decided to expand it like this.  He has no one to blame for being bored with the story but himself.

Oh, the lack of Tywin saying "Wherever whores go" was a bit disappointing to me too.  That background with Tysha is such an important part of Tyrion's character arc I am a bit surprised they left it entirely out, and that is a killer line.  I was kind of hoping they would end the whole episode on Tyrion killing Tywin and fleeing King's Landing, but ending it on Arya setting sail for Braavos makes sense too.
