Thanks for that, Thork. I'll read over it in more detail later and edit as needed. There are considerably more rules there than I had in mind.

Suggestions & Concerns / Bug tracker
« on: December 02, 2013, 12:49:16 PM »
This thread is to remind myself to set up a proper bug tracker in lieu of S&C. A web forum is terrible at tracking issues with the forum.

There will still be a support forum for non-technical users who do not know how to file a bug report.

What about John and Daniel?

They won't be admins, but by all means invite them.

I've had a brief look over the theme, but this CSS is frustratingly difficult to grok, and user-interfacey stuff isn't really my area of expertise. I'll hopefully have more time to look at it later in the week and work out what's wrong; for now, you can use the normal search function.

I honestly doubt we'll ever need income to run this site at all. Heck, I'm paying for a server identical to the one this forum is running on and I pretty much just use it to greet people. These things are pretty cheap, and there is free (gratis, lol) software out there that does pretty much everything we could possibly want to do better than paid-for stuff.

Agreed. I was simply addressing squevil's suggestion in a hypothetical situation where that becomes the case.

Should I invite the old admins like Jack and Wilmore?

Please do. Everyone is welcome, if they choose to join.

Not as admins!

Wilmore will have a place as admin here, if he chooses to take it. He has a good head on his shoulders and has done some great things for FET.

I can't install mIRC because I'm missing "msvcp110.dll," whatever the fuck that is.

Microsoft Windows, ladies and gentlemen.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: donate button
« on: December 02, 2013, 01:57:16 AM »
I presumed you were paying for the space.

If it ever becomes necessary to source funding from the users of FES, it will be through strictly voluntary donations, and perhaps merchandise. No special forum status will be granted to those who donate; I'm not interested in creating a divide between the rich and the poor. And there will never be any advertising on this website.

some really nice forum software like vbulletin

You must be joking, right?

and cover any hosting costs etc.

This forum is hosted on my personal VPS. It costs me nothing other than time to maintain, since the VPS would exist either way.

Its not a crime to make money to invest back to the society.

If the society ever needs a monetary investment, I'll keep that in mind.

I will not monetise this website. T-shirts and the like, perhaps if we are successful here. But I won't make money out of people who simply want to post, through donations, advertising or any other means.

This is weird, given we're using the same style as .org did. I have to leave for work shortly, but I'll take a look when I get home.

Until we get some more specific forum rules (hopefully later this week) to codify this, there's one particular point I'd like to emphasise.

On the old FES forum, there was frequently a drive to put the Society's public image first, or to encourage the registration of new members, both sometimes at the expense of the existing user base. I don't think that's how a forum community should work. This forum is going to be, first and foremost, about making every member who wants to be here feel welcome -- provided they abide by the rules and respect the right of others to feel comfortable here.

I won't turn away unpopular members from .org simply because they have annoyed people. They are a part of the community, and until such time as they begin disrespecting the rights of others, they are just as welcome as anyone else. The moment we begin discriminating based on how much we like someone is the moment we begin to fracture our community, and I don't want that to happen here the way it has happened on .org.

So please, try to be patient and tolerant of others, and remember that by treating others with respect, you ensure that your own place in this community will be protected by the friendly staff here at .sjm.so.

Thanks for your time.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Flat Earth FAQ: Discussion

About how big is equivalent?

I don't think it needs to be precisely defined. If someone looks at their sig and thinks "yeah, that's about five lines of text", it's good enough for me.

I need a definite answer for the first question btw.

125x125 for an avatar; a good rule of thumb for a signature is no more than 5 lines of text, or an equivalently sized image.

A wiki-based FAQ is a much better idea. Having it in a post is awkward and requires the OP or a mod to make any required changes. In the wiki, it's much easier to maintain, and thus much less likely to become outdated.

fine. please unlock my vagina thread though and return it to its state of former glory. I haven't finished talking about vaginas yet.

I'll just delete it and you can post a new one, in CN this time. Deal?

If you're going to create joke threads, do it in CN. I locked it at the same time that PizzaPlanet moved it into CN, so it was something of a case of overmoderation.

Kindly keep The Lounge sanitary and wholesome in the future. Thanks.

Can you change the symbol thingy? It sticks out like a sore thumb. Or add it in its own section, like wiki and concerns or something. Or maybe put it in the menu bar overhead, next to members.

It sticks out because it's a link and not a forum. I don't think it's that big a deal; and like I said, this is temporary until I work out a sensible way of integrating them better. This is just so we have an easily visible link to the wiki in the short term.

If the icon is really bothering you, you can AdBlock it for now.

One of my vague ideas about improving things is to better integrate the forum and the wiki, but for the time being having them accessible and discoverable is sufficient. I've added a link under Flat Earth Discussion Boards to the new wiki, so you don't have to remember the URL.
