No scientist would ever publish a paper admitting they know rockets cannot work in a vacuum.

...and what does that tell you?  ::)

Science is controlled .

You're going to have to elaborate on that one.

Don't really want to revisit this discussion

If you don't want to revist this discussion then why did you revisit this discussion?

because zooming in and out

You can change the scale without zooming in and out.

on a picture of a map doesn't change the fact that it's massively distorted 'flat earth' map.

Bing maps is the least distorted maps. Have you ever used bing maps to navigate?

lets just say that I want to make a 2d representation of a 3d place. One scale is not sufficient.

I'm going to make a 2d "map" of a hallway with three children. Each child is three feet tall. here is the "map":

By your logic this "map" is massively distorted because the child in the back, who is three feet tall, is much smaller than the child who is in the front. they should all be the exact same size.

Does Bing maps use different scales, all at the same time?

That tells me they don't want to lose any money.

Every physicist/scientist in the world (or at least those with an interest in rockets/vacuums) is just ignoring the facts to keep getting funding? Even those who are in self-funded higher-education, for example?  Wouldn't that be worth a Nobel Prize, being able to prove Lackeys Law?

Flat Earth Community / Shetland (UK) space centre for satellite launches
« on: February 20, 2020, 08:29:16 AM »
Pesky space centres sending up more balloons!

"Plans to launch a space centre in Shetland have received a £2m investment boost, it has been revealed.  Shetland Space Centre (SSC) said private equity firm Leonne International's financial injection gave it a 20% stake in the business."

I wonder who exactly is funding this and why, if it's complete folly.

For those that don't know, the Shetlands are remote islands in Scotland; "a subarctic archipelago in the Northern Isles of Scotland, situated in the Northern Atlantic, between Great Britain, the Faroe Islands and Norway".

Please confirm that toilets do not flush the opposite way to which you are used to.

Whilst you are there and have an interest, make some effort to see the Southern Cross in the night's sky. That won't prove anything, but at least you can say you took some time to look at Southern Hemisphere constellations.
I thought Australians just shit in holes in the ground?

But I will look for the southern cross, thanks for the suggestion. Didn't even think about it when last I was there.

I'm based in the UK.  In April I'll be travelling to Australia.

Nearest city would be ...?

What would you suggest ?

Flat Earth Community / Re: why can’t the people in south see Polaris
« on: February 14, 2020, 03:59:09 PM »
if the earth is flat, people in south(people over the equator) should see the Polaris like the people in the north do. But they actually don’t. Can someone please explain this?

Or is it that the flat earth has an oval surface, so the people in south have their vision blocked by the curve? but is it curved that much?

thanks a lot.
This is simply not true.

Some evidence to support this point would be lovely, alternatively just concede that you can't possibly make such a definitive statement ?
What evidence would you like?

Can you see your neighbor's back door?

Why not?

Something in the way?

No...my written statement stands.
Kangaroo logic might be sufficient to make some sort of claim, but certainly not to disprove the OP.
I'm not trying to disprove the OP as he never wrote a truthful statement to begin with.

The ability of humans to perceive objects is roughly limited to 350 km, regardless of the shape of the earth.

The OP wrote that people should be able to see Polaris from wherever they are standing on the earth if the earth was flat.

That statement is just flat out false.

The sun is 150 million km away and I can see that.  Your statement is just flat out false.  This is a fun game isn't it?

Flat Earth Theory / Re: Infinite Earth and zeteticism
« on: February 14, 2020, 03:42:34 PM »

When reading up on the atmolayer lip hypothesis I noticed references to the "infinite earth", the idea that our world is an infinite plane. How is this notion even remotely compatible with zeteticism?

Infinite earth is conceptually analogous to the nonsensical idea that Earth rests on "turtles all the way" and is thus axiomatically impossible to inquire about. No FE experiment conceived on zetetic grounds can show an infinite plane to be either true or false - one could always argue that that you didn't venture far enough to see the edge.

Is the hypothesis about the Earth as an infinite plane really viable from a zetetic point of view or do I miss something? A  discworld makes more sense in the FE context, me thinks...

When empiricism or traditional science doesn't come up with the right answer, Tom resorts to "but what if" logic.

From what I've seen here, the accelerating (UA) flat Earth theory seems to be the most cogent in respect to FET (that's not saying much), or at least seems to have the fewest holes in it.

This is simply not true.

- Do you know the distance required for Polaris (apparent magnitude of 1.97v) to stop being visible to the naked eye?
- What % of that distance passes through our atmosphere versus no atmosphere? (or atmo*whatever)
- How far away is Polaris under FET?
- Have you travelled "away" from Polaris to measure the point at which is stops being visible / has anyone?
- Did it fade from view gradually as you moved away?

If you can't answer these, you can't categorically call a statement untrue.  Everybody has a theory and that's what this place is for, but TL consistently makes dismissive statements like this without any supporting commentary. Tedious.

Flat Earth Community / Re: A quick poll
« on: February 12, 2020, 05:47:01 PM »
I am very anxious to see the continued results of this poll. I was just about to start one almost identical.

I am also very disappointed in the results, already, which actually confirm my immediate suspicions.

At this time, there are only 16 votes and already there is a significant favor of Flat Earth nay-sayers. That is ridiculous for a Forum with the title Flat Earth Society and indicates corruption, in my humble opinion.

I will be launching a Blog or other website very soon for Flat Earthers ONLY. There is a dire need for a safe-haven for believers and burgeoning believers to be able to share their ideas and nurture their growing suspicions in the Flat Earth topic.

Nobody would attend a church that was completely full of unbelieving skeptics. The majority of skeptics and outright nay-sayers on all Flat Earth Forums online proves that true believers are being systematically run off of these sites and relentlessly belittled for their beliefs and undeniable observations from empirical experiments in their physical world.

You can't hide the Truth, and, by God, you'll never silence it.

Oh my goodness, so much wrong with this post it makes my head hurt. Logic is flawed, conclusion wrong, suggestion silly. So because of a flawed experiment, you want a forum where you all... what... just take it in turns to agree with each other?

It will be you and Tom Bishop alone, having a lovely time.

It looks like your information is false still.

Again, GPS wasn't commercially available until 1999.

Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System

Citation 5 - https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/gadgets/a26980/why-the-military-released-gps-to-the-public/

"The GPS project was started by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1973, with the first prototype spacecraft launched in 1978 and the full constellation of 24 satellites operational in 1993. Originally limited to use by the United States military, civilian use was allowed from the 1980s thanks to an executive order from President Ronald Reagan[5]. "

The law allowing was passed in the 1980's.

The technology allowing it wasn't available until 1999.

Admittedly Mashable isn't a great source, but "on May 25, 1989, the first Magellan GPS NAV 1000s were shipped to retailers."

Are the wildfires still going on? I wonder if you would really be able to see the sky clearly with smoke and such. I hope you've no family out there. :(
Thank you for the concern. They seem to be past the worst and now it's a clean up / animal rescue operation. Terrifying stuff.

Good point about the air quality. I would hope by then it's cleared.

Not everything would need to be related to an FE.
But it does seem to be yet another conspiracy which conveniently supports your position.

If circumnavigation is too tough, it can be attributed to weather conditions.

What about those times when circumnavigation is totally possible?
https://www.yachtingworld.com/voyages/sailing-antarctica-record-breaking-voyage-around-southern-continent-123341

EDIT:  Apologies that's perhaps slightly off topic.

According to that article they went below the 60th parallel.

According to the Antarctic Treaty you need stop get permission from the United Nations to travel below the 60th parallel. Otherwise you get arrested:

Norwegian arrested after Antarctic voyage

Again, these yacht races which go around Antarctica come down to a matter of trust in government.

Are the claims even real at all? Could it be a publicity piece?

As those yachts don't even see the Antarctic coast, could the government be giving navigation instructions which sends people around an island?

The governemnt could internally justify the lockdown of everything below the 60th parallel as "based on the past difficulty the military has experienced down there we need to lock Antarctica down for safety reasons."

Have you considered the circumference of the 60th parallel on a flat Earth versus a round Earth? On a round earth it would be something like 12,500 miles. On a flat earth I have idea, but vast. Inside the 60th parallel the disparity would be even more noticeable, right? Narrower on a RE, wider on a FE).  So the options are:

A) If government are giving false instructions the ship would be travelling a much greater distance than there on-paper route and not realising it. I don't buy that, personally.

B) The boat crew are in on it too. What's their motivation? Cash perhaps, but every single ship to (allegedly) circumnavigate the continent is also in on it? Seems at odds with the "There is no Flat Earth Conspiracy" narrative.

Which I suppose brings us back on topic, which is the motivation of all these people, working together to collectively deceive the public.  Or perhaps they're not.
