Flat Earth Theory / Antarctica
« on: September 16, 2015, 10:51:30 AM »
A lot of FE theory is based on Antarctica being this strange and unknown part of the world but in reality there is a lot of science going on there all the time.

This video shows a big effort to map the ice volume:

Nope unfortunately it is not flat.

Flat Earth Theory / Gravity
« on: September 14, 2015, 02:56:23 PM »
I do not see any good reason for the unusually illogical account for gravity in the FE model.

Why make a model where the Earth accelerates at a constant rate?
It would be much simpler to just take for granted that the earth has gravity which does not effect anything above some particular altitude distance.

A constantly accelerating at 1g Earth would mean that we would probably be traveling faster than light.

Yet at the same time I see that one "proof" that the Round Earth model is incorrect is because we do not feel the motion.

Also an accelerating Earth would mean that it is in space which in the FE model either does not exist or is not very large.
For example I have seen some criticism that 93 million miles to the sun is way to big a number but if Earth where accelerating that fast we would cover that distance in a few days, hours or maybe minutes.

It seems to me that the current FE model creates far more complications rather than simplifying.

Flat Earth Theory / Pros and Cons for a flat Earth
« on: September 08, 2015, 01:31:38 PM »
For a flat Earth:
The Earth feels flat
The Earth does not feel like it is moving

Against a flat Earth:
Ships sink below the horizon
Time of day and sun angles do not work on the flat Earth map
No one has ever found an edge
We have hundreds of thousands of pics from space and hundreds of actual eye witnesses who have been in space and seen it.
It can and has been surveyed
Two plumb bobs spaced far apart are not parallel
The way the night sky moves is only possible with a round Earth
No one has actually seen the mysterious "anti-moon" which causes eclipses of the moon.
Every minute of the day we are circumnavigating the globe with planes boats and satellites
The distances between things do not work on the flat earth model
The horizon is visible as a sharp line and does not fade out.
The Coriolis effect is evident
The sky appears curved
The flat Earth model does not allow the sun to ever appear below 40 degrees from the horizon but the sun clearly sinks below it.
The shape of the Earth and it's orbit around the sun are proven because this model exactly predicts when and at what angle the sun will be visible from any point on Earth an any time. No flat Earth model could do that.
The distance to the Sun and Moon are far more than the 3000 miles estimated in the FE model
The distance to the horizon is measurable
Man made satellites can be seen with the naked eye and tracked with directional antennas.
About 40 nations have combined launched more than 6000 satellites into space with about 500 currently operational.

Flat Earth Theory / In hindsight....
« on: September 06, 2015, 05:02:28 PM »
Just ran across this old magazine article:

http://blog.modernmechanix.com/5000-for-proving-the-earth-is-a-globe/8/#mmGal

about a guy named Voliva offering a $5000 reward for proving the shape of Earth in 1931

the article ends with:
The Voliva prize probably will remain uncollected unless some future space traveler some day anchors his ship a few thousand miles out in space and takes a movie of a globular world turning on its axis. That seems to be the only way the $5,000 can ever be collected.

I guess the misjudged true believers ability to ignore reality.

Flat Earth Theory / Why?
« on: September 04, 2015, 03:23:13 PM »
What is the purpose of debating this?

In my experience people who believe the Earth is flat do so because of a "gut feeling" or religious belief or paranoia

Any evidence for a spherical Earth can simply be dismissed as "faked" or irrelevant. The fact that no digital flat Earth model has ever been constructed that accurately simulates what we actually see is completely ignored.

A good example of this is the Bedford canal wager where the flat Earth'er lost the bet and then spent twenty years harassing and threatening the surveyor who proved him wrong. So the wiki simply rewrites history.

Might as well step out into the sunshine and debate whether it is day time or night time.
