Philosophy, Religion & Society / Re: Transgenderism

It's to do with the perception of gender in society.

If gender was truly neutral socially then I very much doubt people would be transgender/transexual.

It is meant to be about asking Rushy about bitcoins.

Yeah I thought it was that as well.

I haven't got a clue what this thread is meant to be about.

pipe dream.
Why's that? They're ambitious, but if it worked well enough in small settings then it could take off.

I just don't see it happening. If it works in a small environment, great. The cost and work of replacing each roadway with solar panels is a ridiculous endeavor. I can see it maybe being adopted by some small (but densely populated) cities, but other than that...

I think it would be a local thing. We have wind farms here in the UK which have been funded by a local community in return for free/cheaper electricity.

I think this may take off once they've figured out how to store renewable energy more efficiently.

I like the idea but is it cost effective?

At its core, it's a physical treatment for a mental illness.  Ideally, we'd treat their minds and help them accept their biological sex rather than have them go through the lengthy, expensive, and still imperfect surgeries to try and change their bodies.  Sadly, that doesn't seem to work in a lot of cases, so I guess physical treatments are the next best thing.

I think it's a social disorder, not so much a mental one.

I've got nothing against transgenderism.

Each to their own.

Sorry, I thought you were claiming that bitcoins can exist without any physical manifestation.

Numbers exist without any physical manifestation.

That said, a physical bitcoin is actually just a serial number (a private key).

I'm addressing this.

Is the number one a physical thing?

The number one is not a unique identifier attached to a network. All bitcoins exist, physically, on harddrives/thumb drives/sheets of paper. There is no such thing as a bitcoin that is not physical.

The number one exists in all networks.

It's how your computer processes information and communicates. It's how the 'bitcoin' serial number is calculated.

You are trying to make a number (and an algorithm) into a 'physical thing'.

Computers don't operate with magic. There is no real separation between "virtual" existence and physical existence.

Now you're using the term existence. Changing the goal posts again I see.

He is trying to make a number (and an algorithm) into a physical thing. Where did the term existence come into it?

Whether we agree or disagree, we should defend to the death a persons right to speak

Free speech does not give people the right to say something and not be ridiculed.

It is impossible for us to know conclusively whether God exists and what he is like unless he takes the initiative and reveals himself.

We must scan the horizon of history to see if there is any clue to God's revelation. There is one clear clue. In an obscure village in Palestine, 2,000 years ago, a Child was born in a stable. Today the entire world is still celebrating the birth of Brian

lol, I love Monty Python

Science & Alternative Science / Re: Anthropogenic Climate Change

It looks like the scientific community think climate change is related to human activities.

It probably is, if even just a little bit. But so what? Instead of bitching to everyone about it, they can get their asses in the lab and fix it. In the meantime, all of us regular people can just be more aware of, and try to limit the amount of energy we consume.

They're trying.

In the mean time I think it's wise to try and limit the damage.

It is pretty good, although it does get a little daft half way through. I think it suffered from the writers strike.
