Sigh. It's that time again. The press are trying to do Flat Earth. This time, we're literally Jair Bolsonaro's inner circle.

The article isn't particularly worth spending much time on, it follows the usual pattern:

• FE'ers are meeting up
• FE has been growing worldwide
• Here's a story of an individual successful FE'er
• Boy oh boy FE'ers are the political option we disagree with!!1!!!!! (in this case it's the Guardian, so we're obviously the far-right)

It's such a tired, boring trope. Do people still read this crap? Does it sell? Could the radical notion that beliefs unrelated to politics are unrelated to politics ever make it into the mainstream?

There are a whole lot of absolutely terrible Flat Earth memes floating around on both sides of the debate. Let's try to have some fun with them and/or be horribly bitter about them!

In this thread, we shall strive to dig out the worst the FE Internet has to offer, share the cringe, and briefly comment on why Meme X is the funniest/worst thing in the entire world. If there is enough demand, we can also start a parallel thread for memes that are actually good.

In the interest of fairness, I'll start with my "favourite" anti-FE meme, and I'll follow up with a monstrous creation I unwittingly unleashed onto this world.

This one comes in many variants, but I'll go with one I was sent this morning, because it has just this tiny bit of extra terrible-ness to it.



The thing that makes this meme so terrible is its proliferation. It started something like 8 years ago, and while it was funny at first, it simply hasn't died when it should have. It stared with someone humorously whipping up a fake screenshot. We get plenty of those, they're usually pretty good, and this was no different. But then something went wrong. More and more "holy shit I love science wtf" pages started editing the screenshot to replace the commenter's name with their own, introducing more and more generation loss each time. People keep sending it over and over, claiming it's "proof" of... something. God knows what.

Meme score: -1/10 please end my sufferring

I'll admit, I was pretty chuffed with myself for that one at first. I thought it was a pretty good clap-back, and the initial response was surprisingly positive. Unfortunately, much like with the other bad meme, it didn't die in time. Article after article after article, the media kept repeating the joke, including their hot takes on the matter. "The FES trolled Musk WOW!", "Elon Musk DESTROYS Flat Earth with FACTS and LOGIC!!!", "People are talking on Twitter and we JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK ANYMORE!"

But hey, at least Le Minecraft Man got involved:




Meme score: A solid 6/10 when it started, a 0/10 by the time it's reached its critical mass. Perhaps if it weren't for my overall disgust with the media, I'd mind it less.

Many people who believe the Earth is not round first heard the idea on YouTube. But how important was the video-sharing website in helping the flat Earth movement grow?

This radio broadcast is scheduled to initially air today at 10:06PM BST, and will be available on-demand shortly after. It'll be interesting to see just how creative they get with the subject this time.

For those who don't remember or weren't here at the time: the last time the BBC touched the subject, we had to lodge a complaint regarding their defamatory misuse of our logo, ultimately forcing them to remove it from their materials.

While this may be old news to our followers on Twitter, it is my pleasure to announce that as of a few days ago, the Flat Earth movement's own football club is ready to kick off!

The Spanish football team formerly known as Móstoles Balompie has been officially renamed to Flat Earth FC by its president, Javi Poves.

Poves provided the following comments for Marca, a Spanish daily sport newsletter:
We are born to unite the voices of millions of flat earth movement followers and all those people who are looking for answers. Football is the most popular sport and has the most impact worldwide, so creating a club dedicated to the flat earth movement is the best way to have a constant presence in the media. This will also be the first football club associated with a cause and an idea, without having a specific location. Professional football clubs are subject not only to a nation, but also to a city. Flat Earth FC is the first football club whose followers are united by the most important thing, which is an idea.
