Last week, the comet "Neowise" was visible from my location. I could see it each night in the western sky.

One observation I made was that its position relative to mine changed with the passing of time - it appeared to drop on the horizon, as would be expected, as the earth rotated away from it toward the east.

Each night as the sun set, it would then become visible once again in the same portion of the sky.

So, let's suppose the sun and moon rotate in a circular motion over the earth as it does according to FET, and let's assume the earth is not rotating as it does in RET.

How then, is it possible for the comet's location to appear to drop on the horizon as if it were "setting" and then appear back in its original location the next day? If the earth isn't rotating away from the comet and the comet is just moving away from us, it's almost like the comet is teleporting back to it's original location in the sky each night, yet it is clear that it fades each night, as though it is moving away from us, yet it's location gets reset?

If you assume FET, then it is apparent that this comet is not behaving in a way that makes any sense whatsoever. If you assume RET, the comet is moving in a way that is consistent.

So, how does FET explain the inconsistent behavior of the comet observed in this case?

Just finished my first Dell TechDirect self-help dispatch ticket.

Had to replace a motherboard on an in-warranty Latitude 5490. With Dell TechDirect, I was able to login to a portal, create a ticket with a brief description of the issue and troubleshooting steps, then select the part I needed. A few days later, the board arrived, with a return shipping label for the defective board. Very slick. Didn't have to call Dell or talk to a single tech rep, it was awesome!

Plus, you get access to resources like assembly/disassembly manuals.

This is really a non-issue, tbh, but since I was bored and just looking at my previous posts, I noticed that post #1 is my most recent post. This seems odd because I would think post #1 would be my first post. Is this something that can be changed? And easily? Like I said, seriously no big deal, and I'm not trying to make more work for anyone - I just think it is odd that it counts it this way.

Technology & Information / CentOS network-based install and application management

I need to setup a CentOS lab, and I'm looking at various technologies for OS and application provisioning such as Cobbler, KickStart, DRBL, Spacewalk, etc...... I would like to be able to install the OS via litetouch, or PXE and have the ability to deploy applications centrally.

Does anyone, with experience in this area, recommend any particular open source products to accomplish this? I have used DRBL, personally, but I'm not sure it will work in this environment without modifying the networking infrastructure - which I do not want to do.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Flat Earth Theory / How does a compass work in FE

I have searched the wiki and forums for the answer to this question, but I have not found an answer that fully explains how a compass is possible in FE.

In RE, a compass works due to magnetism. FE proposes a similar answer, and a compass still relies on magnetism, but what I have not understood is how is a magnetic field created on FE?

RE relies on a rotating core that generates electromagnetic pulses which expands its way into a large magnetic field surrounding the globe (overly simplified explanation). The needle on a compass, which is essentially a free-standing magnet, is attracted to the poles through normal magnetism - opposite poles attract.

How is this magnetic field created in FE? This is what I have been unable to find in the wiki and the forums. Thanks in advance for your candor.

I could not find anything in the wiki about this, so I'm curious; how does FET explain the existence of meteorites and the event of meteor showers?

From my observation, a meteor, as it enters our atmosphere/plane explodes with tremendous force and burns up into nothing.

What is going on with the dome as this happens? Do meteorites come from above the dome and poke holes in it just before they plunge into earth, or do they somehow form underneith the dome and plummit downwards suddenly for some unknown reason?

Is there another explanation?

Lunar Orientation

Q: Why does the orientation of the moon look the same to everyone one earth regardless of where they are?

A: It doesn't. The orientation varies depending on your location on earth. In FET this is explained by the different observers standing on either side of the moon. On one side it is right-side up, and on the other side it is upside down.

Imagine a green arrow suspended horizontally above your head pointing to the North. Standing 50 feet to the South of the arrow it is pointing "downwards" towards the Northern horizon. Standing 50 feet to the North of the arrow, looking back at it, it points "upwards" above your head to the North. The arrow flip-flops, pointing down or away from the horizon depending on which side you stand.

First off, I think there should be a way to empirically test this theory by having two people stand several thousands miles apart, on the north and south sides of the earth and observe a crescent moon. According to FET, if you observe the moon from the north, it will be flipped in the south and vice versa. Please read the wiki for an explanation.

FET backs up this claim by suggesting that you would notice a similar effect in RET. I propose this to be false. I do not believe there would be enough difference on a RE for the human eye to notice the angular change from standing on one side or the other.

In fact, (in theory) if you have someone standing exactly on the North pole, and someone else standing exactly on the south pole, the angular difference in their perspective of the moon would be the diameter of the earth (7,917.5 miles), and this angle works out to be about 1.9 degrees difference when the moon is 238,900 miles away. If the two people are standing closer together (which is more realistic), the angle gets even smaller.

Would the human eye actually notice this difference?

If the earth is flat, and two people stand the same distance apart as in RE (7,917.5 miles), and you assume the sun to be 3000 miles high, the angular difference between the observers becomes 105.68 degrees.

Would the human eye notice this difference? You'd have to be blind to not notice. That's enough of a difference that each observer would be looking at different sides of the moon. Which is why the wiki explanation says the crescent moon should flip when being on one side compared to the other.

This should be a testable, and verifiable theory. Does the reflection of the sun off the moon flip when standing on one side or the other?

Take a break from reality! Take a break from technology! Take a break from comfort and amenities... go outside!

Being outside is a favorite pastime of mine. Whether it be working in the garden and mowing the lawn, camping/fishing, or hiking up a mountain. Even tried snowboarding a few times - love it!

In all honesty, I'm worried for our future generations. In the house all day, watching tv, playing vids, surfing the web, tablets, smart phones, all other types of electronic devices to grab (steal) our attention and turn us into non-existent beings putting all of our energy into a virtual-reality. What will we become when we lose our skills of gardening, wood-working, hunting/fishing, craftsmanship... are we failing to pass these skills down to our children? Many people I know can't even start and keep a fire going without dousing it with gasoline or lighter fluid.

To me, this is a very saddening truth, and as the years go by I feel myself getting more and more disconnected from virtual-reality and craving something more real.

Like backpacking on a mountain for four days above 10k feet elevation, getting water from streams and eating only small bits of dehydrated fruit and deer jerky. That's the life for me! Freezing in the middle of winter at minus 16 degrees, keeping warm by tending to a fire and using hot coals to heat a tent. Would love to try ice fishing, it's a bit of a phobia for me - the thought of falling through ice on a lake......

Anyway, please share your amazing outdoor adventures! Would love to swap stories! Or talk about the changing of future generations that are migrating from the great outdoors to computer screens and smart devices.

I've heard the argument used that if the sun is as far away as RE says then the light rays should be parallel with each other, not angled as they are in this photo.

I'm not sure I've heard that argument in these forums, so I am curious what tfes says about this.

When I was young, I had the privilege to see David Copperfield LIVE! It blew my mind to see someone get sawed in half right in front of my eyes, or get locked into a box and appear on the other side of the stage. The greatest trick was when he called upon several members of the audience (at least 10 or 15), had them come up front and climb into a suspended platform which was then covered up by a large curtain. After some charades, and spinning of the platform, the curtain was dropped and all 10 or 15 audience members had disappeared! Incredible. Of course we all knew it wasn't real, so nobody was worried that they were actually gone from existence, but we were all quite amazed, nonetheless. A few minutes later (it seemed) after the charades ceased, someone gestured to the audience up-stage (I was sitting clear in the back row), everyone seemed to be pointing at me. I turned around as though there was someone behind me they were pointing at, and to my dismay, there WAS someone behind me... a whole 10 or 15 someones! All standing there with candles lit... It couldn't have been more than 10 or 15 seconds since the curtain was dropped, I thought. Not even 30 since they were placed up on the platform....how in the......??

 Well, however in the %$#! it happened, it most certainly happened.

Obviously there was a secret trap door of some kind that the 10 or 15 people went through, then through a tunnel to some stairs where they ended up right behind the entire audience - they were all given candles in the process.... all planned and synchronized. Astounding performance!

But how is it that the entire audience failed to see the 10 - 15 people go through the trap door? How did nobody hear or see them walk up in single file right behind them at the back of the auditorium, with lit candles!?- like literally right behind them. I could have reached behind and grabbed one of them - they were so close.

The answer is simple, selective attention.

My point is, you are getting information from your senses, and that information is processed by your brain. Only some of it....

If you were able to process everything that came into your 5 senses, you would literally go crazy... you would spend all of your time processing random, meaningless information about your surroundings such as fine lines in the carpet, or differences in shades on the wall caused by cracks or bubbles. Dust particles, bugs.... extraneous lines, spots, or colors on a blanket, a shirt, pants, your pets hair and dander.... there is just too much data coming in for you to process all of it.

So how do you make sense of your world and the things around you with sooooo much input?

Basically, your brain creates structures of information called schemas. They are like templates for information, so when your brain is triggered by a certain sense or stimuli, the brain immediately calls for a schema that fits the information coming in. This schema allows you to quickly process the data in a meaningful way and causes your consciousness to ignore the extraneous information that doesn't fit the schema. This is how a magician can fool you. They cause your brain to focus on a particular detail for which you have a schema, so your brain immediately hones in on that trigger and creates a picture of what's happening - extremely vivid. Unfortunately, as this amazing function happens, you conveniently ignore the reality that 10 or 15 people have just traversed a trap door right in front of your eyes. The brain failed to process it.

Most of the time these schemas work for our benefit. Allowing us to make sense of the world and our surrounding. Occasionally, they lead us astray.

This poses an enormous problem for empiricists - believing only in what you can collect from your senses, and taking that as not only your reality, but also that of others. Making these things into truths. Imagine if the entire audience was unable to make sense out of their failed sense experience... how many people would be calling 911 claiming that aliens have abducted an entire group of volunteers at a magic show because they "just disappeared".

Theoretically speaking, our senses provide us with all the information we would ever need, practically speaking, we do a fine job of ignoring most of it, and sometimes we get the rest just completely wrong. Including observations such as landscapes and earth curvatures or non-curvatures. Distances between mountains or valleys, how much of a peak we can or cannot see. Whether or not the ship goes out of our vision or how a massive a piece of land looks from afar. Planets, moons, stars.... everything we take for granted. What is real and what isn't? What does Helen Keller make of her world? Never able to see or hear? Only a world of touch, taste, and smell? Are these things real?

There's no such thing as a fluid that cannot be compressed.

If I have misunderstood the claim made for this formula, I apologize.

What does this formula claim to do, and how does it work?

Well, you claimed that: "Some of the more well known folks here have come up the following formula for the momentum of an in-compressible fluid" so I figured I would immediately point out that this can't possibly be the case, since there's no such thing as an "in-compressible fluid".

Rushy's posts do not add anything to this discussion, and dodging the question and turning it back around on me is not helpful. I clearly apologized that I misunderstood and asked for clarification, to which Rushy replied with the above quote. Since Rushy is a moderator, I am not sure reporting him to the moderator is the right course of action, so I posted here as it states to do in the rules.

It would be nice to have a limit to how many quotes can be requoted in a single quote. When 5 people quote a previous post who quoted a previous post and so on, it gets repetitive and unreadable.

Maybe quotes should be limited to just the previous post or two?

Flat Earth Theory / The rotation of the sun

Look at this picture. It depicts the circular path that the sun takes at different seasons of the year.

In North America, the days are considerably longer in the summer than they are in the winter. We're talking roughly 8 hours difference from the longest to the shortest day.

In this picture, the inner circle represents the path the sun takes during the summer. If the sun moves at the same speed all year, wouldn't the summer days be much shorter than the winter days since the circumference of the summer path is much smaller than the winter path?

Edit: I guess the question is, does the speed of the sun change as the seasons change? I'm not understanding how the length of days (a 24 hour period) remains constant in this model.

I continuously hear the argument that airplanes do not angle their noses down to compensate for a curvature in the earth. Someone even took a level into an airplane and demonstrated that the plane always remained level, and never had to nose-down for the curvature. This is used as definitive proof that the earth is flat.

I disagree with the notion that this is proof of a flat earth.

If you attach an object to a string and spin it around in circles, the object will remain the same distance from the end of the string the entire way around as long as you spin it with constant force. For a moment, let's assume the earth is round and gravity is a real force. In a RE model, the force of gravity is constant (9.8m/s squared). As an airplane flies around the earth and the pilot flies level, the force of gravity would keep the airplane the same distance from the ground without any manual intervention by the pilot. Gravity would pull the airplane around the curve just as the string pulls the attached object around in circles.

Alas, a pilot does not have to fly downward to compensate for earth's curvature, gravity does this for him/her.

If the earth is flat, you should be able to see the sun through a telescope in the middle of the night (assuming you are high enough that your view is not obstructed by obstacles) - perhaps from an airplane or tall mountain. Why is it that you cannot?
