Spamming
« on: May 15, 2018, 01:51:54 PM »
I received a message this morning as follows: "You have received a warning for spamming. Please cease these activities and abide by the forum rules otherwise we will take further action."

I replied to this, asking whether 'flooding' or 'spamming'. The former is basically making too many posts. The latter is posting links for commercial gain.

I was unable to reply as no address was given. I have no commercial interests, perhaps 'flooding' was meant?

Can someone from the society confirm this message was authentic, and clarify the meaning.

Many thanks,

Edby

Do not make topics in any forum concerning moderator actions other than the Suggestions and Concern forum.

So I got the spamming warning today. Can anyone give me direct guidance on this? Which post(s) are considered spam? I posted a joke yesterday. Was that it?

Thanks Pete

I'm sorry, but I don't see in those rules where spamming is defined or expressly forbidden.

I've been on the receiving end of this, too.

Seems to be a different definition of 'spam' here than applies everywhere else on the internut.

Tumeni, I've already explained this before to you, personally, but I guess I'll do so again in the hope that it sticks this time.

The templates we use for warning PMs are predefined, and, yes, not particularly accurate. We don't see it as a priority to improve them, since the PMs are not a primary source of information. We always include a response in which the warning is explained.

As for the definition of spam - it is not exclusively flooding nor advertising. The definition of spam is unsolicited or unwanted electronic messaging. For an obvious example, if you go to the upper fora with a thread saying "HAHA ERF ROUND", you're spamming.

I'm sorry, but I don't see in those rules where spamming is defined or expressly forbidden.
Keep your trolling within its designated boards (CN/AR). Since you're already on three warnings, it's time for a short holiday. Let's go with 5 days for starters and see if that helps.

But ... you're soliciting messaging from others by the mere act of having this forum, and inviting participants into it from anywhere in the world. Aren't you?

"A message is Spam only if it is both Unsolicited and Bulk." (https://www.spamhaus.org/consumer/definition/)

"Irrelevant or unsolicited messages sent over the Internet, typically to a large number of users, for the purposes of advertising, phishing, spreading malware, etc." (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/spam) None of these apply here.

You aren't 12 (as far as I can tell). This isn't a hard concept and your pedantry isn't witty. Locking this thread.

edit - I will forego another warning for now, since it looks like the next step for you is a 30-day ban. You can either learn how this place works, or go away.
