Flat Earth Theory / Comprehensive explanation for sunsets
« on: September 26, 2022, 07:10:55 PM »
I published a video last week examining the claimed "most comprehensive flat earth sunset explanation".  The video I reviewed simply said that perspective was the main cause of sunsets.  Then offered refraction as the second cause.

I analyzed these claims and found they didn't explain sunsets at all.  I did the math for perspective and concluded that perspective demands that the sun could never get close to the horizon.

I examined the effects of refraction, which cause things to appear slightly higher, not lower.

In the comments of my video, several flat earthers were angry at me and declared that I just didn't understand flat earth.

I don't want to misrepresent the flat earth position. So I come to you, dear flat earthers, looking for the correct explanation for flat earth sunsets.

Since I have already done the math for perspective, there is no need to just say "perspective".  Instead, please provide the full geometry-based method to properly explain how the sun appears to cross the horizon.

Further, I have read the wiki page here on the topic:
https://wiki.tfes.org/Sunrise_and_Sunset

This provided nothing testable.

I read Rowbotham's work.  It simply makes claims about perspective without a plausible mechanism.

I read the Electromagnetic Acceleration page.  It lacks empirical supporting evidence.

Any answers I receive may be featured in the follow up video.

Thank you in advance.
Here is my video in case you want to point out the correct methodologies:

Flat Earth Media / Pete Svarrior and MCToon friendly chat
« on: March 20, 2019, 11:08:31 PM »
Pete and I had a nice chat for my Coffee with a Flat Earther series on YouTube.  The video is premiering Thursday, March 21 8:00pm GMT or 3:00pm CST.

You can watch live and participate in the live chat or watch any time later.

Thanks for the cordial chat, Pete.

Flat Earth Community / Dan Paladino to appear on The NonSequitur Show
« on: December 27, 2018, 12:05:36 AM »
I see that Dan Paladino from the Flat Earth Society will be appearing on the NonSequitur show on January 12.  This is exciting, I will watch this show for sure.

I am unfamiliar with who Dan is.  There are two "Flat Earth Society" web sites I know of, is he someone on this site?  The other site?  Someone we know?

On this video they announced Dan's appearance around the 5:40 mark:

Summing the interior angles of a triangle on a flat surface will always be 180 degrees.  The sum of the interior angles of a triangle on the surface of a sphere must be greater than 180 degrees and less than 540 degrees.

Pilots have successfully used Operational Navigation Charts (ONC) for decades.  These maps work, if they didn't, flights would get lost, run out of fuel, etc.  Planes would have crashed in large numbers, the people that own the planes would stop using faulty charts to protect their costly assets.

I used paper ONC charts to plot out a route around three airports, then pieced together the paper charts.  These airports have regular weekly flights in each direction.  The great circle routes form a spherical triangle, the sum of the interior angles of this triangle is 263 degrees.  A complete impossibility on a flat earth.  The projected great circle distances for each leg match the time taken for each flight based on the air speed for the airplanes flying each flight.

Here is the video documenting this:

I also redid the route for arbitrary points on the globe, not associated to airports to accurately meet the exact requirements of a challenge of exactly 90 degrees at each turn:

This entry satisfied the challenge and was declared to be the winning entry, though the challenge issuer welched and claimed the challenge had been closed.  He had clearly stated numerous times that in-progress entries would be accepted.  No matter, as stated in the video, I was not going to accept any of the money, half to charity, half to be held for winnings in future challenges.

So, as ONC charts must be accurate and have not, to my knowledge, been proven to have errors, this is solid evidence of a spherical earth.

Flat Earth Theory / Flat Out Hero and MCToon examine the AE Map
« on: October 12, 2018, 05:51:19 PM »
This serves as the place for Flat Out Hero and MCToon to have a discussion of the AE map.  This is in response to Flat Out Hero's YouTube video titled "Wolfie quit WOOFIN! Hahahaha, I can fly circles around you, you ain’t no PILOT!!!!"

I ask that participants be kind and engage respectfully.

Question specifically for Flat Out Hero to answer:
Quote
Someone in Argentina faces due south and someone in Australia faces due south, according to the AE map, they are facing nearly opposite directions. They both see the Southern Cross constellation. Show how this is possible.

Flat Earth Theory / FE Map project: observations
« on: October 02, 2018, 08:13:50 PM »
On a separate thread there was some discussion on real world observations of the earth that are simple, easy to understand, easy to verify, and non-contentious.  The discussion continues but, so far there have been no disagreements about the truth of these observations.  If there are disagreements or discussions about the truth of these observations, please continue on this thread:
https://forum.tfes.org/index.php?topic=10818.0

For this thread we accept these observations as accurate:

1. On the equinox the sun traces a very nearly straight line across the sky for every location on the equator.
2. On the northern solstice the sun is very nearly directly almost overhead at solar noon for every location on the tropic of cancer.
3. On the southern solstice the sun is very nearly directly overhead at solar noon for every location on the tropic of capricorn.
4. On the equinox the sun rises almost exactly due east and sets almost exactly due west for every location on the earth, except for the polar regions.
5. For all points in northern latitudes, when looking due north observers see the northern pole star, Polaris.  In the north polar region observers will see this by looking nearly directly up.
6. For all points in southern latitudes, when looking due south observers see the Southern Cross constellation.  In the south polar region observers will see this by looking nearly directly up.

These will guide in laying out a map.  However, these are not enough to produce a complete map.  In this thread I would like to ask for other observations that match the criteria: simple, easy to understand, easy to verify, and non-contentious.  Something that you could discuss at a dinner party.  Something all parties can happily agree on without getting dragged into minutia or observations that are unverifiable!

How can the locations of continents be understood?  How about the relative sizes and layouts of the continents.  Nobody have been to all the coastlines of any continent, can we identify some fact everyone can agree is true to assist in the layout?

Again, remember, the first 6 observations are not the discussion of this thread, that goes in the other thread.

Flat Earth Theory / Requirements elements for a FE map
« on: September 24, 2018, 06:53:59 PM »
Not having a map is troublesome.  For a flat earth a map is easier than for a globe as there is no projection required.  To help creating a map I have been thinking about what is required.

There are a couple sample FE maps, the AE map and variants has been shown to be incorrect for several reasons, which is not the point of this thread.  A bi-polar map has been proposed, the caveat of the sample map has been that it's not meant top be accurate, just an example showing a north pole and a south pole and antarctica as a continent.  The edges of the world are left off, ice wall or infinite plane are considered, but, again, what's not on the map is not the point of this thread.

This thread is to collect some information on what is required by a map regardless of the layout.  I have several basic real world observations that can be agreed upon by everyone.

1. Observation is that on the equinox the sun traces a straight line across the sky for every location on the equator.
Requires: The equator must be straight, not curved.

2. Observation is that on the northern solstice the sun traces a straight line across the sky for every location on the tropic of cancer.
Requires: The tropic of cancer must be straight, not curved.

3. Observation is that on the southern solstice the sun traces a straight line across the sky for every location on the tropic of capricorn.
Requires: The tropic of capricorn must be straight, not curved.

4. Observation is that on the equinox the sun rises almost exactly due east and sets almost exactly due west for every location on the earth.
Requires: To be discussed.

5. Observation is that on the equinox, for all locations on the equator, the sun rises almost exactly due east and sets almost exactly due west.
Requires: To be discussed.
