Title: Valve offers free games to Debian Developers
Post by: xasop on January 22, 2014, 07:26:48 PM
Looks like Valve is interested in contributing back to Debian, which is what they're basing their new console platform SteamOS on:

https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/01/msg00006.html

They're giving free access to all their games to Debian Developers, and apparently discussing other ways of giving back to the community.

This is really great news, particularly as certain well-known vendors have a history of leveraging open-source projects while giving back as little as possible. It looks like Valve is actually interested in cooperating with the Linux community, which is only going to make Steam run even better on Linux.

They should be pushing code back. That's contributing.

That's one way of contributing, yes.

How do you make money out of a community that wants everything for free?

Apparently you give the devs free games to make their product better, so more people will use it, so that your piggyback product will get to more people who will then buy games.

And how do you stop all your customers registering as devs?

How do they know who are developers now?

I doubt they would care. Valve games have barely any sell value as is, seeing as everyone either already owns them or can get them 90% off every few weeks.

By getting them interested in Steam, and eventually having them buy games from developers who aren't willing to give theirs out for free.

By making them feel happy about coding for Debian. The changes they make will eventually trickle down into SteamOS. Steam sells games to other people (non devs). The better SteamOS is the more people will use it/buy stuff.

Please learn something about how Debian works organisationally before making comments like this. You don't simply "register" as a developer.
