My computer is a slut...
« on: June 17, 2015, 11:27:02 PM »
...and went gallivanting around torrents with no protection. Contracted some malware and I can't seem to shake it. I used McAfee and Malwarebytes to no avail. I can't even tell what malware I have. What is the next step before reformatting?

Did you try SpyBot?  You may also want to try pulling the hard drive and scanning it as a secondary drive on another machine.

No. I need to run QBs which, in my limited knowledge, does not work on Open BSD. I am also unsure if I can commit to the hours required to properly learn how to install Open BSD.

Run MalwareBytes, combofix, and potentially HijackThis. Then reinstall because it's Windows.

1) what is it doing?
2) does it do it in safe mode? And safe mode with networking?
If you are going to DebOOonK an expert then you have to at least provide a source with credentials of equal or greater relevance. Even then, it merely shows that some experts disagree with each other.

1) what is it doing?

Creating hyperlinks to shit sites throughout pages I visit. Creating popups when I navigate to new sites and really intrusive ones. It recognizes my ISP and starts whooping telling me I have won a contest.

2) does it do it in safe mode? And safe mode with networking?

I will have to check this.

Have you recently installed something and just clicked next next next next without bothering to look what each step says?

Yeah, it sounds like adware. A general scan probably won't pick it up. You should probably do a boot-time scan and root kit scan too. Sometimes adware won't be seen as malware by your AV. Usually it will show up in the "unwanted programs" section, which you usually have to pay extra for. Better get a new computer though.

Pay closer attention when you install your softwares, and make sure to opt out of any and every bullshit third-party pieceses of crap which might by default be marked to be installed along with your softwares.
Going next next next and not paying attention is quite hazardous these days.

Run your browser in safe mode.
If it's IE run it without add-ons.  That's likely what you have: adware add-ons.

You may also want to consider FireFox or Chrome with NoScript.

This did not work, in fact nothing has worked.  I am pretty awed by the terrible power of this malware.  I am now really excited for my new laptop to show up so I can get rid of this partition forevah.

Check your list of programs in the control panel and uninstall anything you don't recognise.
