Bo Burnham
« on: December 14, 2013, 04:05:48 AM »
While this thread didn't go very well over at .org and I was pretty much the only one who liked him, I'm poasting this because he has a new show coming out and I'm excited. Here's a new bit from it (it'll be free up on YouTube/Netflix soon) that made me laugh quite a bit, although the end is pretty cheesy:

If anyone's interested I'll put up more bits from him I like, or if you like him at all you can share your own. :]

So yeah, it's up and I just finished it a bit ago (and watched several parts again just now). It was kind of hit-or-miss, but I attribute some of that to the fact that I've seen him do certain parts at smaller, like, 5-minute venues before in bits and pieces so when he used them in this I'd already seen them a few times. That said, most of the new stuff was pretty damn funny (as always, the songs are the best part) and I still, if nothing else, love and appreciate his anti-humour and penchant for turning comedy staples on their head, generally refusing to do standard comedy.

If you don't like fast-paced comedy and want a normal "routine" that you'd normally get from Louis C.K. or Jerry Seinfeld or whatever, this is exactly what not to watch, as there's no real "format" to speak of and stuff happens out of nowhere.

That said, I think it was overall a good show, and if nothing else, the last 13 or so minutes are absolutely worth watching. The song is (IMO) a hilarious parody/satire of love songs (especially modern ones) and pop music in general, then the closing of the show is honestly one of the best closures to a show I've ever seen. Ending a show is usually awkward and abrupt, but this was wonderful. I don't wanna spoil anything even though nobody's gonna watch it 'cause it's cool to experience and watch, I think, but yeah.

The major points worth watching, I think, are (with links! [and leaving out "God's Perspective", which I put in the opening post]):

09:43 - 13:58 (A World on Fire/Sad) — A self-evident song and a song about sad stuff and being sad and stuff.
14:12 - 16:15 (I Fuck Sluts) — Very inappropriate and gross, something I'd usually find really eugh since I'm a prude, but I find it hilarious for the Seussian contrast and the impeccable rhyming and flow.
20:00 - 25:55 (Left Brain, Right Brain) — A weird sort-of musical duel between his emotions and his reasoning, where they fuss over which is the more important one. It's odd, but I found it entertaining.
33:07 - 37:05 (Poems) — Very hit-or-miss short poems but has a couple laugh-worthy ones.
47:59 - 59:11 (Repeat Stuff/Ending) — The aforementioned song and ending.

So yeah, the rest of it is stuff you'd probably have to be a Burnham fan to enjoy (or a fan of his kind of comedy, at least) or just stuff that isn't really good.

I liked his early YouTube shit the best, and his newest stand up bit the worst. It was kind of irritating, especially in the beginning.

I am watching "What." on Netflix. I think he's hilarious.

I could see his metahumour getting boring after a while though.
