Why do I have to contribute, but not the others?

You don't have to, but you're the only one being rude to Blanko. If you aren't going to contribute, don't come here just to say that you could have done a better job.

Could have made a better logo. Just sayin'.

Either contribute something, or don't post snarky comments about the contributions of others. Your choice.

Fixed. Is it working for you now, Thork?

I see the problem. It's SMF being... well, being SMF. It will only work for members whose names start in lowercase (so it works for pizaaplanet, rooster and junker; but not for Parsifal or Thork). I'll see what I can do about it.

Give it a while. Browsers are idiotic about caching things, so if it's not working after a day and at least one browser restart, I'll look into it further.

Indeed, feel free to write up whatever you think is suitable.

Thanks for this, Blanko. Favicon should now be working (probably). This is why I hate web development.

I think you should change a word to autoreplace, but don't tell anybody what it is. Lemon/lime was funny but it's predictable now.

How do you know I haven't already?

Reminder of what needs to be done here:

What I'd like here is:
  • an About blurb that isn't just lorem ipsum;
  • preferably, an About page with a little more detail;
  • an introductory blog post explaining what this site is about;
  • a theme that isn't just me dicking around with a generic theme for half an hour to make it look vaguely FES-ish.

This is now top priority, as the biggest issues with the forum (getting the domain name sorted and having proper spam protection on signups) are now resolved, or at least under control. Sticky'd.

If someone wants to work on a theme for the homepage, hit me up and we'll work out a way to test it.

I suggest this:

What is the source for that? It could work, but I don't want to post random copypasta onto our new homepage with no citation.

Language?..............Reported.

Edited. I was a little ticked off at SMF at the time.

I can probably do the first three myself after a bit of sleep, but I'll happily take contributions from others.

Anyone? I've spent the past two hours debugging PHP code written by people with no clue how the Internet works; I think that earns me exemption from writing this shit up. :P

Announcements / Admin account approval no longer required

Good news -- I've (after much pain and suffering) got us set up with an SMF plugin that will check the IP address, username and e-mail address of new members against the Stop Forum Spam database of spammers. If it finds a match, then admin approval is required; for everyone else, they can get in with only e-mail confirmation from them. I've also turned down the difficulty of the captcha on signup, as it was hard to read sometimes.

I'll keep Lord Dave as admin for the time being, as I don't know how effective this is going to be. We may have to roll back to admin approval for all accounts if this plugin doesn't catch everything we need it to, but I have high hopes.

Oh, and because SMF is horribly broken, this verification won't work for IPv6 clients. If you're on IPv6, your account will still need admin approval regardless.

I have an ominous feeling that if I try this, the exact same message will stop me, and I'll be completely fucked.

Install Linux.

Why don't we have a favicon yet??

Because it isn't important.

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Use CloudFront for serving static content

We are now using Amazon for DNS, having switched to tfes.org for our primary domain. This will make it easier to transition to CloudFront in the future.

Is this fixed now that we have switched domains?

The domain name has been switched over. By now, you'll have had to log in again. This can't be helped when dealing with software as brain-dead as SMF.

Let me know if you see any residual problems. I'll be keeping an eye on how much traffic is hitting the old domain, in case there's something I've missed.

Which is odd because I have the non-free driver.

Just install the non-free driver from the Debian repository. Then everything should work.

I installed it because the open source drivers are great but only for the 5000 series and up.  I have the 4890 and it sucks.  Or at least it did in Ubuntu.  Does Debian use a different driver?

It's probably the same driver, although according to the man page, the 4890 is supported. I have a 6850, though, so I can't comment on how well it runs on the 4890.

Would it be bothersome to have the CMS on flatearthsociety and the forum on tfes?  This would also achieve the goal of the CMS ranking on Google easily right?

That would be doable, but I'd really prefer to keep everything under one domain for simplicity.

If you can get flatearthsociety.org, then just redirect tfes.org to it.  That way everyone can still type in tfes in their browser to get here but the flatearthsociety.org link is what will show up on google and newcomers will see that site name and know what it is.

I would hope the big "The Flat Earth Society" logo at the top would communicate that.

So, basically, will either make any difference from the other in terms of Google rankings and the like? 'Cause if redirecting one to the other will have the exact same effect, then I'm all for tfes.org.

It shouldn't make a difference, especially if we're using meta keywords correctly (I'll have to check if SMF does, but BlazeBlogger definitely does).
