I'm probably going to just use the SATA SSD from my current machine and get an HDD for extra storage. I'd rather spend the money on other components than a separate M.2 SSD.

It's a good thing SSDs do both of those things considerably faster than a traditional hard drive.

Irrelevant.

It's time to spend some money you guys!!!!

As many of you probably know, I have wanted to buy a new desktop for years, and I think I'm finally ready to commit enough £ for that to actually make sense. This thread is intended for all the nerds to make fun of me for my choices and to suggest stupid alternatives that I will laugh at and disregard.

Some ground rules:
  • This will first and foremost be a gaming computer. I will also use it for Excel spreadsheets, browsing FES, and I might donate my processing power to science when shit's idle.
  • I work something silly like 12-hour days and literally don't have free time. I'd prefer not to invest any time into building my own PC, unless I can save enough money to get a serious upgrade out of it.
  • My budget is £1000 (not including peripherals - I'm reasonably happy with what I have), and I'd like for that to be a fairly firm ceiling.
  • I'm not married to nVidia/Intel, but for some reason I always tend to pick them over AMD. There's no rhyme or reason to it, so feel free to convince me to flip-flop.

Here's what I came up with so far: stuff

Discuss.

While I agree with the sentiment to build now, if you're going nVidia, it's probably a good idea to wait until the end of the month when the new 1080X and 1070X come out. It seems they're beating the current flagship cards at a significantly lower price point.

pfft I say the same thing Junker does and I get attacked for it.

The jump from 28nm to 14nm is not a joke. Keep in mind GPUs have been 28nm for over four years. Intel was making processors with smaller dies three years ago. The possible performance increases are fantastical and very much worth the wait if you can bear it.

In the time between you and junker making the suggestions, cat offered to migrate her pc to my house, so things are marginally less urgent now.

That's pretty dank, but I strongly doubt importing a desktop from the US&A would be worth it. I think my current build (including suggestions to go with SSD+HDD and to wait for the GTX 1070) is pretty close to ideal at this point.

Its an HP.  Nothing is worth getting an HP computer.
If you are going to DebOOonK an expert then you have to at least provide a source with credentials of equal or greater relevance. Even then, it merely shows that some experts disagree with each other.

I've read that the new GTX 1070 and 1080s are really just overpriced founder's edition cards. Be careful about buying them.

I understand I was touting them earlier but as more information about them comes out the more I realize sneaky Nvidia is just trying to claim they beat AMD to market.

The idea is to wait until they come out and see how they perform in benchmarks, and if I feel I can justify the price difference. Obviously I still have the option of going for a 970/980.

I ended up going for an i7-6700k and a GTX 1080. Brexit also made things more expensive (THANKS BORIS). Suffice to say I didn't stay even remotely within my original budget.

But hey, new PC hype!!! Some poor peasant has been tasked with building it for me and it'll be getting here in a week or two.

I work 12-hour days (at a minimum). As much as I'd really like to build my PC, my time comes at a premium right now, while money does not.

That's also why it's gonna take 2 weeks. It should be ready next week Monday-ish, but I can only feasibly have it delivered to me on a Saturday.

There's nothing "master race" about following a list of easily comprehensible directions. Now, if you get BSODs, overheating, or it won't post, that's where the skills come in.
