Title: Shortcut keys
Post by: Dr David Thork on August 24, 2020, 07:49:38 PM
In the interest of brevity, it would be nice if the forum had a few shortcuts.

Maybe ctrl-s for S&C, ctrl-c for complete nonsense, ctrl-n for a new post, ctrl-r for a quick reply, ctrl-/ for a search. Just underline the letter so we know what is what.

This kind of thing.

As most of us are likely quite fast on a computer, moving one's hand to the mouse for every little thing on this website ...  ::)

Well its a suggestion. Do what you like with it.  :)

Oh, and make sure there is a short cut for new replies. That's my de facto home page on this website. I always go back and forth from there.

Nevermind. I just discovered Vimium.

Great, because the answer is no, we are not going to override default browser shortcuts. Some of us use Ctrl+S for saving webpages, Ctrl+C for copying, Ctrl+N to open a new window and Ctrl+R to refresh.

This is not strictly true - it's already SMF's default behaviour in some cases. For example, while writing a post, shift+alt+s submits the post, and shift+alt+p displays the preview.

While I wasn't aware of that, we're not going to add more overrides for even more commonly used shortcuts. We should perhaps also consider removing SMF's defaults.

Firmly object. You can carry on blocking JS on your end, and there's no need to remove functionality that stood for 5 years over your personal preference.

This has nothing to do with my personal preference. Do people actually use those shortcuts? If so, it makes sense to keep them.

I have no data beyond my own use (BBC shortcuts are handy, too) and the fact that Blanko went out of his way to keep them working during the theme redesign. Combined with the fact that they don't (to my knowledge) clash with any browser functionality, there is no case for removing them.

EDIT: We were also just asked for more shortcuts. Reducing them in response would strike me as counter-intuitive. If anything, I'd suggest rethinking Thork's suggestion in principle, just ignoring the specific suggested shortcuts and designing them in a way that's unlikely to clash with other functionality.

You just claimed they did:

I also don't know of any existing use for these in browsers, but my reading of your reply was that you do.

I have no opposition to adding shortcuts that aren't established browser defaults.

Not my intention. We are overriding browser defaults but, to my best knowledge, those specific browser defaults would be empty in most standard deployments. Nonetheless, it sounds like we both know what each other meant now.

I have no opposition to adding shortcuts that aren't established browser defaults.
Then I think we're in agreement. The specific shortcuts Thork suggested are a no-go, but those could easily be revised into something more palatable. I'll play around with the idea and report back within 2 business years.

I shall wait with bated breath.

Let's also overwrite ctrl Z, X, C, P, and V, no one uses those anymore.

We already addressed this. Please don't bump old threads if you have nothing to add.
