SCIENCE as FAITH and RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE on the LEFT
« on: December 30, 2020, 02:39:48 AM »
Most people say they know the earth is round. But actually, that's not true. They don't KNOW the earth is round; they have faith in science that it is round, just as have faith in science about continental drift, dinosaurs and Relativity. Science is their faith. Unfortunately they scorn the faiths of others.  Similarly people have faith in climate science and no tolerance for others whose faith stands elsewhere.  Is this intolerance real, and is it religious in nature ?

I don't think it's fair to describe RET as *faith* in science - while it applies to some people (including several vocal posters here, who believe in RET without understanding it), it is more common that people believe the findings of science because they stand up to their scrutiny. This is distinct from faith, which encourages the avoidance of scrutiny, or even prohibits it as a taboo.

I also have no idea where "the LEFT" is coming into all this. There are plenty of right-wing scientists, plenty of left-wing religious people, and RE'ers and FE'ers alike come from all paths of life.
