Replying to every post he makes with the number of orthographic errors doesn't make you seem intelligent or daring, it makes you seem as annoying as EJ.

Looks like I'm going to be the one going against the bandwagon here. I don't think he should have been kicked from the show. I'm probably one among few who thinks the First Amendment should be as close to an absolute right as possible. (Obviously it can't be a full absolute right, as then it would be legal to shout "Fire!" in a crowded public area) You should be able to express any opinion you want, whenever you want, without needing to worry about PC or offending someone. Losing your job because of an opinion is just as bad as losing a job for being gay.

He didn't lose his job for having an opinion. He lost his job for causing damage to his employer's reputation. If you work in a shop and decide to tell all the customers about your mysoginistic opinion of women the shop is likely going to fire you because they don't want their female customers driven away.
I suppose so, perhaps I misunderstood the reason. Everyone I hear talking about this has been talking about First Amendment stuff, so I assumed that was what it was about. Sorry if I completely missed the point on this one.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Say whatever you want without offending someone? And how do you imagine that could work in reality?
I guess that's what makes me different from other people, it is literally impossible to offend me, and I'm confused when others are offended by trivial things.
I'm sure that's not true.
What makes you think that?

Flat Earth Theory / Re: On the earth's shape, and what we truly know
« on: December 21, 2013, 07:41:12 AM »
An what about that other planets? Are they flat too?

I don't believe so, and I actually question the logic of referring to these celestial bodies as "other planets."  We've always done it in the past because it's what we're used to, but using that term suggests the RE assumption that these bodies are similar enough to the earth to expect similar basic characteristics.  That, of course, leads to the old question, "So why is the earth the only planet that's flat?  Why is it so special?"
This is why I find it difficult to believe someone could believe in a flat earth without associating it with religion. It seems odd that this would be the only flat plane in existence without some higher power determining it is so. I'm curious to hear athiest FEers remarks on this, do you think that the flatness of earth, the uniqueness of it, contributed to life forming on our planet? Although since I suppose you believe we have not observed any other planets or moons, you believe there very well could be life on them.

It would be nice if we could get back to the topic of religion, rather than if all Africans are black or whatever you two are arguing about.

Scientology shouldn't even be classified as a religion, sadly it is.

Isn't the base rule the one making the claim, regardless of whether it's negative or not, has the burden of proof?

This is an interesting topic to discuss, but it's no fun when EJ and Yaakov keep swinging it back to race. That's not what this thread is about.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Re: Drugs should be legal.
« on: December 18, 2013, 11:58:15 PM »
I'm not the most informed person about this, but from what I can tell, pot is a whole lot less dangerous than nicotine or alcohol. If the growing movement to legalize drugs gains more support, I still wouldn't support anything except pot, which is the only thing most people are campaigning for anyway. As far as it ruining people's life, there are plenty of legal things that already do that (alcohol, cigarettes, gambling), so I don't really see that as a valid reason against it.

I'm not much of a tech person, but how is this different than an Apple TV, or are they just competing products?

I just don't understand why you're so incredulous when you said that all Islams should be escorted out of America and Israel at gunpoint. Just about no one would argue that's an extremist viewpoint. I'm not saying you should apologize, but you should at least acknowledge the fact that your views are unusual and not seek out to offend/piss off as many people as possible. At that point you're just stooping to EJ's level.

Nope, SC. We're the stereotypical gun waving people with the confederate flag bumper stickers. At least some of us.

My state is pretty much the model of pro gun support (probably pretty close to Texas) and I guess that influences me into supporting gun rights. I have no interest in having a gun of my own, but I honestly feel safer knowing a large percentage of adults have a gun.

I thought Texas was the state that gave you the chair for everything. I guess it's still unconstitutional to give a teen the death penalty, so is it an all or nothing mentality?

Actually, on thinking about this further, in theory any corporation could be exempt from this. Corporations are technically people in the United States, due to an interpretation of the 14th Amendment. There have been situations where courts have upheld the right of the 1st Amendment to a corporation:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_United_v._Federal_Election_Commission

I'm not sure if this is the norm everywhere, but if a corporation is considered to have First Amendment rights, then in theory they could claim as a corporation a requirement to provide contraceptives is a violation of their rights.

Here's another article about this issue, specifically with Hobby Lobby

I would support a sole proprietor having immunity to this part of the law if they identify as religious. I suppose a larger company would work as well if they specifically sold religious products. (Bibles, ect.)

A good rule of thumb is if you don't want people looking at your pictures or personal info, don't post it on the internet.
