My e-mail system allows me to delete files from my trash can or expunge them.
What's the difference? The dictionary says the words mean the same thing. The result seems to be the same thing. What is expunge doing that delete isn't and why would I wish to choose between the two?

Delete sets the system flag for deletion and expunge purges the emails flagged for deletion.

delete removes it from my trash can
expunge removes it from my trash can

The system probably doesn't purge the deleted files until after you exit, while expunge will purge immediately. At this point I'm just guessing. Why don't you just look this stuff up in the system manuals?

It was just something I wondered. Your answer is enough for me. I don't really care. Just wanted something to base my decision on. I at least now feel like I know what I'm picking. I'm a simple creature like that.
