Flat Earth - Why Now?
« on: March 08, 2019, 06:54:27 PM »
Why do you think flat earth has blown up in recent years?

I think that, and phenomena discussed extensively in Behind the Curve, is the community and sense of belonging. In the information and digital age, where the fracturing of communities and loneliness are increasingly prevalent, perhaps flat earth combats such phenomena.

Because we have been putting forward fantastic arguments and winning the public over.

Chemtrails.
If you are going to DebOOonK an expert then you have to at least provide a source with credentials of equal or greater relevance. Even then, it merely shows that some experts disagree with each other.

In some ways, loneliness is increasingly prevalent, but in others it's not. Consider someone who holds a wildly unpopular opinion (of which a FE'er would be an obvious example in modern society). A few decades ago, they might have never had a chance to meet many like-minded people, or even realise that they exist. Now, we have online communities which can connect people across great distances. And this sort of unity brings a certain kind of strength with it.
Read the FAQ before asking your question - chances are we already addressed it.

You make a good point, but I wonder if people who hold such "wildly unpopular [opinions]" would even be around if not for the times we live in. I also wonder if -- or, rather, doubt that -- online communities are as effective as in-person communities (e.g. the Flat Earth International Conference following as a natural conclusion from a once just online community).

Unfortunately, the public seems very undiscerning these days. Trump, FE, social justice; there are a bunch of dumb things people seem all too willing to digest.

So anyone who has an opinion that differs from your own must be stupid?

I mean half of your country decided that Hillary Clinton was just too corrupt to put in the White House and took the only other option ... but you'd be happy to have her embezzling tax payer money and laundering it through the Clinton Foundation, so long as she didn't try to keep your precious illegal immigrants out with a wall?

Oh, so you are criticising America's choice of President when your nation elected the single worst President on planet earth. Good job.

I somehow imagine that Putin or Erdogan is worse than Trudeau. It is hard being worse than something that doesn't exist, though.

Of course. They don't like America and so your press is going to tell you that they are evil. Its funny how everyone America likes has a good leader and everyone they don't like has a tyrant.

Every Israeli leader ... good
Every North Korean leader ... bad
Every European leader ... good
Every Russian leader ... bad
Every Canadian leader ... good
Every Iranian leader ... bad

Clearly, this is the only reason why Putin and Erdogan are, as you put it, evil.  ::)

Well they aren't trying to turn their citizens gay, they aren't enacting hate speech laws and they do prevent illegal immigration. But hey, its all perspective, isn't it.

Bill C-16, right? I do take issue with its stipulations. I know very little about Canada's immigration, especially if they have an illegal immigration issue. Do they? Would you mind showing a source?

This has got wildly off topic but yeah, what Pete says.
There have always been crazies out there (no offence, chaps), but the internet means crazies don't have to shout on street corners any more, they can shout across the internet and other crazies can see it. And some non-crazies who don't know any better can think "hey, these guys are on to something" and become crazies

TFES Wiki Occam's Razor page, by Tom: "What's the simplest explanation; that NASA has successfully designed and invented never before seen rocket technologies from scratch which can accelerate 100 tons of matter to an escape velocity of 7 miles per second"

I prefer Pete's "wildly unpopular opinion" to your "crazies."  ;)
