Title: R.I.P. Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers, a raucous and often-ubiquitous comedic presence on TV and nightclubs since the 1960s, has died. She was 81.

I thought she was 16?

She lived to 81 with an unknown number of face lifts.

I'm surprised it took so long.

Wasn't she supposedly a complete asshole? I'm not going to google it but if anyone cares to tell me I'd appreciate it.

Yes. She was supposedly a little bitch, but she was brutally honest and candid about herself which was endearing to many.

This is a direct quote from her regarding her funeral, directed toward her daughter:

Quote from: Joan Fucking Rivers
When I die (and yes, Melissa, that day will come; and yes, Melissa, everything’s in your name), I want my funeral to be a huge showbiz affair with lights, cameras, action…I want Craft services, I want paparazzi and I want publicists making a scene! I want it to be Hollywood all the way. I don’t want some rabbi rambling on; I want Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents. I don’t want a eulogy; I want Bobby Vinton to pick up my head and sing “Mr. Lonely.” I want to look gorgeous, better dead than I do alive. I want to be buried in a Valentino gown and I want Harry Winston to make me a toe tag. And I want a wind machine so that even in the casket my hair is blowing just like Beyoncé’s.

That sounds awesome.

That sounds awesome.

My favorite part is the bit about the wind machine.

People would be freaking out if this was how Robin William's death was handled. Damn double standards.

Robin Williams.  And they were two different people, so of course there are going to be two different reactions.

Joan is not sprinkled throughout my childhood. I just remember her as a hateful woman whom I never found humorous.

So her life is less important than Williams?

I was unaware of saying such a thing.

You clearly implied that he was more important to you.

Yes. One sentence is subjective, the other is objective.

I don't even know what those words mean.

Well that's the thing, Robin Williams appealed largely to the generation that is presently dominating social media, it's no surprise his death was treated as a big deal on the internet while that of Joan Rivers was just kind of "old woman who was on tv dies or something".

Just looked her up, quite glad I'd never heard of her

Well, also because Robin Williams has more of a reputation as a really nice, gentle person, whereas Joan Rivers kind of has the reputation of being crass and horrible. A lot of the "eh" is from people who are aware of who she is.

That said, I'm still really sad that someone died, but yeah, it doesn't affect me that much because I've never been a fan. Still. :[

Exactly, Snupes.

I'm aware of who she was, Crudblud. the news still shocked me a little cause someone died. But she had no influence on me.

Also, Robin Williams killed himself. Joan Rivers died out of operation complications. I think that's already a pretty major difference right there.

People are more than entitled to believe Robin William's life was worth more than hers.

Well yeah, people can believe he was more important. There are people in your life that are more important or influential than others. If some guy in, let's say Norway, gets hit by a bus. You never met him, or heard of his name, or anything before, and I told you he got hit by a bus, you wouldn't really care at all. That's not double standards, its just it ultimately has no impact on your life and therefore is meaningless.

Celebrity is often confused with importance.
