Frank Zappa 1981 tour compilation album
« on: December 08, 2013, 02:58:56 PM »
Since I ended up not having time to review shows the past month, I'm just putting together a compilation album of my favourite bits of the tour instead. I'll use this thread as a convenient way to track ideas and such.

Here's what I've put together in Ardour so far:

1. Zoot Allures
Opening crowd noise and head from 1981 12 06 - Boulder, Colorado.
Guitar solo and band intros from 1981 11 27 late - Chicago, Illinois.

2. Montana
Intro from 1981 11 27 late - Chicago, Illinois
First vocal part from 1981 11 28 - Minneapolis, Minnesota
Instrumental section and final verse from 1981 11 25 - Detroit, Michigan

3. Pound For a Brown
Mostly from 1981 11 25 - Detroit, Michigan
Ending from 1981 11 27 early - Chicago, Illinois

4. The Dangerous Kitchen
1981 11 27 early - Chicago, Illinois

Next I'm planning to follow up with:

Cosmik Debris
First verse from 1981 11 27 early - Chicago, Illinois
Remainder from 1981 12 05 - Kansas City, Missouri

Suicide Chump
Probably 1981 12 11 early - Santa Monica, California

Jumbo Go Away
Probably 1981 12 11 early - Santa Monica, California

Envelopes
It doesn't really matter since all recordings of this one are alike, but probably an early tour version before it became reggae

Drowning Witch
Opening from 1981 11 25 - Detroit, Michigan
Most of vocal section from 1981 12 12 early - San Diego, California
First guitar solo from 1981 11 27 late - Chicago, Illinois
Second guitar solo from 1981 12 06 - Boulder, Colorado

What's New In Baltimore
Probably 1981 12 12 early - San Diego, California

Moggio
Probably 1981 12 11 early - Santa Monica, California

Sinister Footwear II
First section probably from 1981 11 17 - New York, New York
Guitar solo from 1981 11 21 - Urbana, Illinois
Last section from 1981 12 04 - St Louis, Missouri

Stevie's Spanking
Probably from 1981 12 04 - St Louis, Missouri

The Man From Utopia
1981 12 11 early - Santa Monica, California

I also want to include a second disc, because there's so much awesomeness from this tour, but I'll leave it at that for now.

I just listened to the Santa Monica early show, which -- quite apart from being a brilliant performance with four guest appearances -- is one of the best-recorded SBD tapes I've ever heard. I'll probably be including substantial sections of it in the final compilation, although I'll try to avoid the numerous officially released sections as you can get those on existing albums anyway.

I always meant to ask, why 1981?  Was this a landmark tour for Zappa?  Or just one that you have a complete collection of?

The 1982 tour has long been a favourite of mine, and I reviewed that one show-for-show earlier this year. The 1981 tour is the only other tour by the same band, albeit with a somewhat more primitive sound, so I wanted to listen to all of it as well.

I've updated my thoughts on disc 2. I'm not sure if all of that material is going to fit, but I'm going to try.
