Actually it really is Google's business. Google has a Privacy Policy page, and a Terms of Service page. Both state that google can collect information on you, I.P. Addresses included. If you have a problem with this, don't use the internet.

Or you can just, you know, configure your browser not to send your information to Google.

I use five privacy-related browser extensions:
  • Privacy Badger to dynamically detect and block trackers.
  • uBlock Origin, primarily an adblocker but also blocks some known trackers.
  • Decentraleyes, which caches static content from content providers locally to avoid passive tracking through the hosting of static files like jquery.
  • Cookie AutoDelete to delete cookies from (non-whitelisted) websites after I close their tab.
  • DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, which, aside from replacing the default search engine with DuckDuckGo, provides its own tracker-blocking functionality.
There are also others such as uMatrix which you can use if you're really paranoid, but they require more work to maintain. The five I listed above are set and forget.

Edit: I should add that Google Analytics is automatically blocked by three of these extensions (Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin and DuckDuckGo), so I don't get tracked by Google here regardless.
I also use Cloudflare for my DNS instead of google or my ISP.

One more for Google in the death by a trillion paper cuts.

Thank you for implementing my suggestion.

You might not have a fixed IP. On boards I've moderated I found bans by IP (to stop Trolls) notoriously unreliable as some ISPs route multiple people through the same IP.
Also, I really don't think Google care that much what you're up to.
Google likes to keep its friends close and its enemies closer. I'm exactly the sort of person they want data on ... because I actively try to keep it from them. I'm the guy that is hard to advertise to. I'm the shadow on the interweb, the vigilante with a grudge, the fly in the ointment, the citizen that won't conform, the rebel with a cause. I'm dangerous.

1805
This forum also records all of our posts ... and there is enough data on here to know exactly who I am. So it is PII.

1806
IP addresses aren't personally identifiable information ...

Yeah, you keep saying that
https://www.enterprisetimes.co.uk/2016/10/20/ecj-rules-ip-address-is-pii/

From an IP address you can infer a location. It is none of Google's business where I am from.

You'll appreciate that banning flat earthers from a flat earth website is rather counter-intuitive.

It would be like a haunted house with no ghosts.   ::)

Huh, apparently I missed this thread when it was created. Let's pick it up.

Normally, I'd be the only person to push against changes to how our GA works, but in this instance, I completely agree. The full IP information does not provide us with much benefit (if any at all), and while the privacy gains are fairly small, I can see no practical argument against it.

I'll discuss this with site admins, but given that you've already convinced the hardliner, I imagine there shouldn't be much opposition. Unless I'm missing something, of course.
Cool. I doubt many sites across the world have implemented this, but if Google is to die, it will have to be a death by a trillion paper cuts.

I'm strongly opposed to any act that reduces the data our Google overlords get. Google is too vital to the internet infrastructure for us to try and hamper it in anyway, and I believe that by limiting the information we give them we are hurting the internet as a whole.
Don't worry. Anonymising the last 3 digits only narrows your device down to one in a thousand. Google likely know which site you came from and which site you went to after and fill in the gaps. I try to make it harder for them. I use Brave browser instead of Chrome, DuckDuckGo as my search engine, have https everywhere on, block third party cookies, ad blocking on, have autocomplete turned off, and send do not track requests ... and I still know google get all the data they want ... but its a game with privacy as the prize, so I'm going to play anyway.

Well I played The Witcher 3 for a bit.

I have no idea what I'm doing. It seems most of the other people in the game don't like me, but that isn't surprising as I go into their homes and steal things and wander about aimlessly picking up weeds.

At the rate I'm progressing looking at my current level (4) and that I can see weapons that need me to be at least level 40 something, this game is going to take me at least 5 years to finish, so I don't need to buy any other games.

It reminds me a little bit of Fable, which I played many years ago. Only this seems so much bigger - read unfinishable. The graphics are beyond what I was expecting though. When it rains, my clothes look wet. When its windy, it feels windy. Games have come a long way.

Whilst I am waiting ... 3 and a half hours to download The Witcher 3! What the hell are Steam doing? They are only letting me pull data at 3.7MB/s.

I had no idea bigger games took so long to download.

I also have no idea what the game is about. People seem to rave about it, but whenever I've seen any footage of it, its always a guy with long white hair just riding about on a horse. Like all the time. Clip clop, clip clop. I'm guessing it is not a game for girls that want ponies, but having no idea will make it more interesting I'm sure.

Oh, and hairworks will be coming off ... AMD and all that.

So my PC arrived.

4k AIO
Ryzen 1400
8gb RAM @2600Mhz
128gb ssd
1Tb hdd
8Gb rx580
Wondows 10

Disappointments ... lets get those out of the way.

1. Dell supplied the PC with 2x4Gb sticks of RAM. Dual channel doesn't make much difference for most things. I'd rather they gave me 1x8Gb and then if I wanted more RAM, I could buy a single 8gb stick and add it. Now if I want 16gb I have to buy a full 16gb. So Thork you very much for that Dell.
2. ... no, I'm all out.

Bonuses

1. It arrived with no crapware on it. I don't know if it had its brains scrabbled when they refurbished it, but no McAfee, no stupid games, nothing that wants to ring Dell and report my data ... just wondows.
2. It is in mint condition. Not a scratch, a smudge, no fingerprints on the screen. It is new. I worried being refurbished what that might mean as to the prior owner, but it looks like they just sent the box back without even opening it. It could just be Dell wanting to shift a bit of stock. I've no idea but its brand new and I saved almost 50% on it. Well worth the risk in this case.
3. Came with a sturdy little mouse that has a mouse wheel. I am not going to use it, but knowing I have one and Parsifal would like one can be chalked up as a little bonus.

Surprises

1. The 4k screen is epic. I know I only bought a PC because I wanted a 4k screen, but now I have one ... even on this site the text is so crisp, the logo is sharp ... and I can see where I came from because the smileys are like little smudges at this point. Its like I popped on some glasses and now everything is so smooth. I thought I may have scaling issues but haven't encountered any so far ... I think the world is now ready for 4k where as 3 years ago 4k would have been a ball ache.
2. Holy crap that rx580 is a beast. So much more graphics card than I wanted, but really nice to have. Forza 7 runs really well and I'm just downloading the Witcher 3. Yes, its an older game but I haven't played many games in the last 10 years. Pretty much all games are new to me. It doesn't seem cut down in any way. Comparing benchmarks on things like Heaven 4.0 it runs exactly as you'd expect any other stock rx580 to run ... so I'm guessing it just pulls as much power as it wants.
3. Quieter than I anticipated. I thought I would take a hit in the sound department, but during everyday work its like having a baby rabbit sleeping on the desk. Playing games is a different story. It really ramps up but isn't so loud as to ruin the sound of the game. The machine deals with the heat really well and the fan stops pumping so hard the instant you take the load off the machine and the back is still cool to the touch. The CPU and GPU temps stay as cool as any desktop I've seen those parts in.
4. I was thinking of getting an NVMe drive for the boot drive because I had one in my last PC. To be honest the ssd in this although slower isn't really noticeable in general use. Everything boots instantly. I'm not even going to bother.

I had the wasted half day of loading MS office, getting my mail accounts on it, putting all my favourite software on there, putting all the settings how I like them, doing all the updates, adding my NAS drive etc ... but now its all done this is by far the best computer I have ever owned by some distance. I didn't really need a new computer and thought I'd be tinged with buyers remorse, but for £719 I think I got an absolute steal.

Oh, and I picked a name. She is called Adele ... because that's what she is.

I think it does break the warranty because I have to open the back up. Then wipe all their 'special' software that keeps the PC working oh so well. But yeah, I was thinking if I kept the other disk as they sent it, how could they know if I swapped it back?
Yup. Opening the back used to be controversial, but there is now ample precedent for it. Manufacturers and vendors might try to bullshit you in the hopes you'll back down, but ultimately you're in the right. Removing their crapware doesn't affect the hardware, so they can't say anything about that, and swapping the SSD should still mean all your other parts are covered (though, again, they might try throwing a hissy)
I thought they'll be more picky over me using manufacturer drivers instead of their special sauce relabeled ones, but they've made it pretty easy for me to get the new drivers. They seem to be mostly direct from the manufacturer.

I don't think when there are around 1 million immigrants from said nation you can't say that information is 'personally identifiable'. Posting images of my face, as you have done with no reprimand ... that's different. I'm the only one with my face.
You had more specific information than "immigrant," which is why I edited it out (and won't repeat it here).
Yes, I mentioned which nation he was from. That narrows him down to one in a million.

Also, I have re-posted your previously posted pictures on a rare occasion
From an account I closed over a year before.

It is one of the reasons I rarely bother engaging with you, as you are emotionally immature (at least here), as well as wildly inconsistent and hypocritical.
That suits me. You break more rules here than most of the regulars and there is no comeback for the rest of us as you are a mod. Hypocrite, thy name is Junker.

this means [...] voiding my dell warrenty
That's not strictly right, and I'm not just referring to your inability to spell things. While the UK has valiantly resisted sensible consumer rights, thanks to pressure from the evil bureaucrats of the EU, your computer will still be covered by warranty for any failures that aren't directly linked to you shoving a new SSD in it.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/money/what-really-invalidates-warranty-you-10180230

An even stricter standard has recently been adopted in the US

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-43724348

It seems that Dell's general practice falls short of UK standards, but if you suddenly decide that you don't fancy a fiery dispute in case of a fault, you can just swap the disks back.

Yes, the 'personal attack' was a joke. I'm sure Pete didn't view it any other way, but I'll respect feelings and all that other PC nonsense for the future.

You heartless bastard.
One might argue this is a personal attack as it is aimed squarely at me and calls into question my legitimacy ... but its also a joke so ...  :-\

So back to the subject of me getting a new PC ...

What I have ordered comes with an m.2 ssd. Reads and write around 500Mb/s.

Having currently got an NVMe in my NUC, I'm not keen on this backward step.

I'm thinking of dropping a Samsung 970 250GB card in ... this means new windows installation and voiding my dell warrenty... but it also means no Dell crapware. So its two birds with one stone. Think that one reads at 3200 Mb/s. 6 times faster.

I don't want to take the one out my NUC. My girlfriend is having this PC when I'm done with it. Seems a hassle to give her the ssd in the new PC and then load everything back on for her. The new NVMe should last about 3 years (I usually get a new computer every 3 years or less).

They are both new and exciting. They are what make time travel small form factor PCs possible. Show me a sff PC from 1995 with a full blown desktop CPU in it.

Thork, let me present to you the Unisys CWD-4002, a small form factor PC from 1995 with a full blown i486 desktop CPU.  :)

Had a TDP of 10-12W. Doesn't need heatpipes like the 65W monster in my AIO.  ;)

It is not irrelevant when that 65W TDP of heat is the thing you have to deal with.
Yes, now you're back from irrelevant to incorrect. 65W TDP is what the cooling solution directly interfacing with the CPU has to handle. It is not the full story when it comes to heat dissipation inside an AiO.
But it is how the AIO manages to deal with a desktop CPU.

You still can't get desktop fans inside them ... you have to use heatpipes like on A LAPTOP!
And? It's not like heat pipes are particularly new or exciting.
They are both new and exciting. They are what make time travel small form factor PCs possible. Show me a sff PC from 1995 with a full blown desktop CPU in it.

The sky is blue. Would you like to make an 8 page thread disputing that as well?
Only if you open it by saying "the sun is a peculiar shade of lime green, which is caused by a recent invention called the windmill" and then act very surprised when no one agrees with you. As you can see, I'm a sucker for these.

Bonus points if you get LD to believe you for a minute or two.
I'm happy to state the world is flat, and you never have any issue argeeing with me on that point.

How is the die irrelevant when talking about TDP of a processor? You don't even know what you are arguing any more.
The die by itself is irrelevant. Thork, you're gonna struggle in Brexit Britain if you don't learn our language.
Don't you tell me how to speak English you dirty immigrant!  >o< It is not irrelevant when that 65W TDP of heat is the thing you have to deal with. <removed, R4> -junker

Also an AIO isn't tighly packed. Its has a 27inch screen and is 3 inches deep. Its got about 10 times as much space inside as a laptop
Which is why I repeatedly told you to fuck off when you tried bringing up laptops.
You still can't get desktop fans inside them ... you have to use heatpipes like on A LAPTOP!

yet uses laptop components.
No, your argument is the opposite of that. If you meant to say the opposite of what you said - well, that would explain why you're so horrendously wrong, but it doesn't make you look any better.
