Title: Eratosthenes Article
Post by: Tom Bishop on August 31, 2021, 10:09:16 PM
I made significant changes to the Eratosthenes article regarding his Round Earth circumference description, assumptions, and the modern value. Here it is for comment - https://wiki.tfes.org/Eratosthenes

Is there a particular reason for you removing the redirect from "Eratosthenes" to the still-existing Eratosthenes on Diameter (https://wiki.tfes.org/Eratosthenes_on_Diameter) article and creating this duplicate article instead?

At face value, this is undesirable for many reasons. A duplicate article and a change of title are both bad for SEO, and creating new articles instead of editing existing ones on the same topic means the edit history is cumbersome to follow. If you wanted to rename the article, you should have asked for it to be moved to a new name.

If this was done in error, I strongly suggest we immediately restore the redirect and edit the original article instead.

Also, this desperately needs editing and spell-checking. The name Eratosthenes is not spelled consistently, sometimes getting as bad as "Erasthonese". Aside from the wiki mismanagement stuff, this article is clearly not ready for publication.

Unless you have strong objections, I will undo all these changes and we can come back to doing this properly at a later time.

Thanks for catching the spelling issues, they were fixed.

Per the title of the article, it's no longer about Eratosthenes's measurement of the Flat Earth diameter, so I combined it into an article titled Eratosthenes. If you think that leaving it as Eratosthenes on Diameter is better, that's fine, we can leave it as that.

Are there any other major issues with the article?

It can be renamed, but it needs to be done correctly, through a page move. Otherwise, it simply erases the history of the page.

I have rolled back all changes. Once you're confident that the article is fit for publication, please make changes to the original one. If you'd like it moved to Eratosthenes, I have no issue with that - just let me know and I'll sort it out.
