I just started watching this last night on Netflix. I was surprised at how engaging it was. I'm a huge fan now, just from watching the first episode... I plan on finishing the series, but who knows how long that will take. The first episode was actually pretty chilling, especially with the depiction of the nuclear bombs going off all over Caprica. I have never seen the original series, so I don't know how well it translated... but as a standalone series, I think it started off great. The first episode really shows how gritty and bleak this series is when compared to something like Star Trek or Star Wars.
Not to mention that the soundtrack and cinematography are just brilliant, especially the scenes depicting all the dogfights in space.
Anyone else a fan of the series? Opinions?

It gets better and darker.

In my opinion BSG is note perfect until the final season. It goes a bit off course but by that point you are so committed to the characters that it is worthwhile.
The best sci fi series ever. Converted me from a decades long love affair with Star Trek.

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of it. I accidentally spoiled some things by looking at the Battlestar Galactica Wiki, mostly some of the "Humanoid Cylons"....
>:(

Meh, won't be too bad a spoiler. The shows lives more in high drama than suspense anyway.

Yeah, I can see that.
Spoilers usually don't bother me, but I liked the character I'm referring to. Maybe it will work out within the series, I don't know yet. :'(

I won't watch this show, because it has the lady who ruined 24 in it.

Katee Sackhoff. It wasn't really her fault, it's just that her character was atrociously written.

It's fucking shit. I had to stop watching after nothing happened for the 34th time.
Back in the days of The Outer Limits they would have episodes that were big budget and get big name actors. Then to compensate they had to do episodes with no budget and shit actors. Batlestar Galactica reminds me of the latter.

You are retarted. Starbuck was amazing with the exception of Season 4. You just don't like women with a spine Geisha-lover.
-
Yes, Vauxy, when I said Katee Sackhoff, I was in fact referring to Katee Sackhoff.

He's referring to her character in 24.

I saw some of it. My wife is a fan and I'd peek at it when she watched it. I didn't get into it myself. Too gritty for my taste I suppose. I do like Starbuck and the last episode was a "wtf" moment.

I like the fact that I can see all of Ms Sackhoff's teeth. That helps avoid awkward questions on the crucial second date.

Loved BSG up until it started getting too woo-y with prophecies and astral visions. The politics worked really well and I loved howw they treated space combat - not silent as that would be boring, but not whizz-bang either because that would be unrealistic., instead they settled for a muted sound as though you were hearing what he pilots could hear. They also don't have too many of the usual ridiculous space fighter tropes. If someone is on their tail, they will just spin the ship around and shoot backwards. Also, Galactica's flak shield is one of the coolest defence systems in SF.

Battlestar Galactica is not so good. You know, all the crazy monsters and stuff...you know like Klingons...and Wookies...and all that but...
Its not just similar to the original Battlestar Galactica, its basically a shot-for-shot remake. The story's kind of bland, its about this guy named Dumbledore and the tower he's in and he has to return this ring.

I went to watch Battlestar Galactica for the first time since making this thread and the internet went down immediately as I opened netflix. I was playing online games for about 5 hours beforehand... :o

I forgot how good the musical score was.

I think Starbuck is my favorite character right now, but I also like Gaius.
Every character is awesome in their own way though.
-
It is pretty good, although it does get a little daft half way through. I think it suffered from the writers strike.
-
I just remembered the aeons where the asian chick and the fighter dude were rambling through the forest. With literally nothing happening. Over and over again. Sometimes they might see a cylon. Jesus H Christ I want that time back. There will be a reckoning and I will get that time back.
-
During the second half of the miniseries Gaius tells everyone he has invented a cylon detector and claims that he used it to determine that Doral was a cylon. From what I gathered: Gaius planned to implicate Doral the whole time, and he made up the entire story. At the end of the film you see that Doral was really a cylon the whole time. Did Gaius make a lucky guess or could he somehow tell that Doral was a cylon the whole time? After all, Gaius is supposedly a genius and is getting help from what may or may not be a cylon chip in his head (or possibly his subconscious, it's not clear on that either). It doesn't really give a clear answer, I figured one of you might have better insight.

Battlestar Galactica doesn't really give any clear answers apart from IT HAS ALL HAPPENED BEFORE which the series tells you time and time again.

Caprica Six points Gaius at Doral.

Nobody cares. I'm glad I didn't suffer any more of this shit since it sounds like the plot didn't advance at all.
