Space X is going to begin launching private space flights next year. Assuming one videographer to document, who would be the three most prominent and trustworthy representatives of Flat earth theory to send?

After centuries of debate this could be the most concise way to end the argument once and for all.

Put it another way; if any of TFES who routinely contribute to these forums was offered the chance to go, would they accept?

Pete?
Tom?

That strongly depends on the terms of the offer. If a creepy man with a known history of substance abuse invited me to the back of his truck promising candy and/or spaceflight, I'd probably say no.

It was two days after my tenth birthday. 28th January 1986.

I was excited. Something brilliant was about to happen on TV.

I was optimistic. Excited. Captivated. I sat down in front of my huge CRT TV with my legs crossed and waited for the big event. This is what I saw.

I decided I had no interest in ever going to space after watching this. I got up, went into the garden and started kicking my football about again looking forward to the summer. This was sad, but it didn't make me cry. I was a big boy now.

However just 6 months later on 22 June 1986, a far more harrowing experience was to happen. Once again I sat down in front of our huge boxy TV. Again, I was excited, optimistic and captivated all over again. And this happened.

I cried for 3 days after that.  :'(

Not a strange man in a truck. But a company comprised of engineers and specialists with a solid track record of success. I mean musk is just the money bankrolling  the hard work of hundreds of engineers and rocket scientists.  If you were given the opportunity to see the earth from a perspective that would give you absolutely certainty of your convictions would it not be worth the trip? No candy and trucks though right.

Oh how I laughed - world's greatest goalkeeper couldn't jump and reach higher than a 20st argie potato . Happy days. Karma since has not allowed the Scottish football team to qualify for such tournaments , such is life .

No it wasn't. It was 2 days after my 8th birthday. My maths is shocking.

Still, 1986 was a formative year I remember well from my childhood ... mostly because of Maradona.  :'(

I'm ok with that. Even during the 6 nations right now I was cheering the Italians on when they played the Scottish. Anyone rather than Scotland.

I do try to watch the 3 nations plus the three occupied Celtic territories playing mill about in the fkn mud but it bores me silly , much like drama queen feetball .

However I do support the English and the English + occupied Celtic territories real rugby teams ( rfl ).

Musk is bankrolling it, meaning that the whole operation rests on the shoulders of a mentally unstable man who's well known to do weird/creepy stuff. The absence of a literal white van doesn't make him less dodgy.

Let's break this question into two:

1. In general, would I be willing to go to space, should the situation allow for it and should the conditions be acceptable? Sure.
2. Would I consider any offer from Elon to be acceptable? Possible, but unlikely.

It's also worth bringing up that this whole "absolute certainty" schtick is a position only RE'ers hold (I won't speculate as to why they do that). The FE perspective is that a trip to space would likely be inconclusive, unless both RET and modern FET got things entirely wrong.

Surely it's the profits from Musk's businesses, and the fees which SpaceX charges to its space-going clients that are bankrolling further SpaceX launches?

Look, you can book your own payload launch online, if you have the $1 million capital...

He is, admittedly, pretty dodgy. Eccentric would be kind.
But to be fair he's not in the "Mad Mike" level of craziness where he's trying to build rockets himself and strap himself to them.
He's letting actual rocket scientists do the heavy lifting, you don't win contracts with the military to launch satellites for you with a rocket you made in your back garden even if your back garden is as big as Musk's presumably is.

In brief, Musk is clearly pretty bonkers, but his rockets equally clearly work.
Tom: "Claiming incredulity is a pretty bad argument. Calling it "insane" or "ridiculous" is not a good argument at all."

TFES Wiki Occam's Razor page, by Tom: "What's the simplest explanation; that NASA has successfully designed and invented never before seen rocket technologies from scratch which can accelerate 100 tons of matter to an escape velocity of 7 miles per second"

Pete.
I'm curious why a trip to space would 'likely be inconclusive".  Would that depend upon the altitude of the trip?

Ok, that makes me curious.  If you were taken to space and saw a vast flat plane from LEO altitudes it seems that would be pretty clear evidence.  Same thing if you saw the alleged curvature.   It seems it would be very conclusive.  The site does not specify altitudes but does make the claim that
"This will provide up to four individuals with the opportunity to break the world altitude record for private citizen spaceflight and see planet Earth the way no one has since the Gemini program."   Unless its a misstatement it would have to be higher than ISS and obviously be high enough to see curvature or not.

But I would vote you as the choice.

Do you have a citation for this sweeping generalisation?

Sure. Let's put Pete on top of a 500 tonnes bomb built by the lowest bidder. What is the worst that could happen

Don't be a baby,   I would go in a heartbeat if I didn't mind living in the streets after.  A tad pricey for a short site-seeing trip.

I don't see the appeal.

ProsCons
Your Instagram will have some pretty good photos on it.You could get blown to bits.
You'll get more sex than a person with your looks deserves. There really isn't anything up there. All the interesting stuff is down here.
You'll have to shit into a nappy.
You'll have to spend a lot of time in a small space with boring American nerds.
You're going to be that guy that never shuts up about that one time you went to space and you'll suffer a social death.

A:  I don't use Instagram, that's for brainless kids as opposed to Facebook that's for brainless grandmothers.
B:  I am very good looking
C: Don't be a pansy

D:  That would get old, being that guy, "hey remember when I went to space and saw the globe?"
