Flat Earth Theory / Sunny vs Pitch Dark at the same time....

Talking on the phone to my brother in law in Paris France... I am in California.
It's 3 pm and the sun is out... however, in Paris it is night time with black skies and stars.
If the earth is flat, how can the sun be shining only on one part of the flat surface and not the other?
