Flat Earth Projects / Flat Earth Maps section in the Wiki
« on: July 13, 2018, 02:59:35 PM »
Since demand for Flat Earth maps seems to be quite high, I've decided to start a gallery within our Wiki and uploaded some of the more commonly-encountered maps. I'm keen on expanding this section, so if you believe any maps should be added, please give me a shout.

Note that while the gallery currently mostly represents the monopole model (with but an honourable mention to the bipolar model), it is not my intention for things to stay that way. Understandably I was best suited to document the model I personally support, but I'd like to see more out there. It would be particularly interesting to see an "alternative models" section in there at some point.

Flat Earth Media / READ BEFORE POSTING: Welcome to Flat Earth Media!
« on: July 05, 2018, 09:56:16 AM »
Welcome to Flat Earth Media!

The purpose of this board is to create a community-driven repository of media relating to the Flat Earth Society or Flat Earth Theory. Please post here if you've found any interesting material which pertains to these subjects. A short description of the material is required.

As content on the World Wide Web can be somewhat volatile at times, we strongly recommend that you create a backup of the material you're sharing. For most Web pages, the Internet Archive Wayback Machine or archive.is should do the job.

Please note that this board is generally not intended for in-depth discussion of the materials linked. If you'd like to engage in more than a brief exchange, please create a thread in the appropriate board (most likely Flat Earth Theory, Flat Earth Investigations, or Flat Earth Community).

Before posting, please make sure to familiarise yourself with the forum rules and the Frequently Asked Questions section of our Wiki.

Please also utilise the search function to check if there is already a thread covering your subject.

Welcome to Flat Earth Theory!

The purpose of this board is to directly examine, discuss and critique the Flat Earth Theory. We encourage posts in support of both the Flat Earth and Round Earth model (or, indeed, any other model). Please note that this board is strictly moderated, and threads which do not focus on a sincere discussion of FET will be moved away from the board.

Before posting, please make sure to familiarise yourself with the forum rules and the Frequently Asked Questions section of our Wiki.

Please also utilise the search function to check if there is already a thread covering your subject.

The top level Flat Earth Discussion Forums are a Debate Club. As in any debate club, the goal is to exercise your ability in debate to poke holes in arguments and expose weaknesses, even if you do not believe in that position yourself. Keep in mind that this is a friendly debate. Post in the Flat Earth Debate Club and join the fun!

Welcome to the Flat Earth Community board!

The purpose of this board is to discuss subjects concerning the Flat Earth community (but not the Flat Earth Theory itself). This includes sharing interesting articles, interviews, YouTube videos, etc. regarding the Flat Earth Movement as a whole, but also discussion of recent events which affect the community.

Before posting, please make sure to familiarise yourself with the forum rules and the Frequently Asked Questions section of our Wiki.

Please also utilise the search function to check if there is already a thread covering your subject.

Welcome to Flat Earth Investigations!

The purpose of this board is to investigate authoritative claims on virtually any topic. The Flat Earth Society encourages healthy scepticism, and seeks to question our institutions and challenge conventional wisdom. While we expect that most threads here will (directly or indirectly) challenge the Round Earth doctrine, this is not a strict requirement for participation.

Please not that this is not the right board for asking entry-level FET questions. If your post starts with "I'm new and I just wanted to ask" or "The Earth can't be flat because of this concept", you're in the wrong place and should probably be looking at the Flat Earth Theory board (and the FAQ).

Flat Earth Media / Flat Earth Society in the media
« on: February 12, 2018, 10:51:10 AM »
Hi guys,

In this thread, I will attempt to document the FES's media coverage. Everyone is welcome to post links to articles, but as per FEIR conventions, please do not use this thread for discussing or debating the contents of the articles (start a thread in FEG for that).

In the future, I hope to have a press/media section on the website. Articles listed here may form the core of that section if and when that comes around.

Also, for the avoidance of doubt, my intention here is to document media coverage concerning our specific society, not other groups or the FE movement in general.

I'll follow up with a few posts shortly as I try and round up interviews and articles from the past few months.

Suggestions & Concerns / On the notion of "MOVED:" threads
« on: February 09, 2018, 06:42:34 PM »
I'd like to suggest that we take it down a notch when it comes to the auto-generated "MOVED" threads. They make some sense, but only if a thread is being moved between upper fora, or if it's someone's first offence. I don't know exactly where the line should be drawn (hopefully others will chip in with opinions to help flesh this out), but I think these may be causing more harm than good on occasion. At the time of me posting this, the most recent post in each of the upper fora is "MOVED: something something" by junker.

Announcements / "It's true, I saw it on the Internet!"
« on: February 07, 2018, 02:37:58 PM »
Perhaps unsurprisingly, we've received many questions about the recent SpaceX launch, and the resultant "live stream" of a pretty red car floating about in space.

It certainly is interesting to see the shift of focus in space programs from official government organisations to privately-run organisations. Whether or not that's a good thing will, of course, vary with your political views, but the ultimate outcome isn't much different. After all, corporations are driven by profit, not the pursuit of knowledge or truth.

What is surprising, however, is the new generation of people shouting "It's true, I saw it on TV!" Except this time, it's the Internet. We have already witnessed the shortfalls of this blind belief in online materials; just consider recent US elections, the political Facebook campaigns in the UK, or the many fake-news sites run from countries like Macedonia.

I would like to appeal to everyone, Round Earther and Flat Earther alike, to exercise more caution when approaching online content. Exercise critical thinking. Seeing something on the Internet does not automatically render it true. Even Steve Wozniak has remarked that ‘[he doesn't] believe anything [Musk] says’. Make of that what you will.

Then again, it was a good car ad.

Announcements / Happy New Year from the Flat Earth Society!
« on: January 01, 2018, 12:04:16 AM »
2017 has been a fantastic year for the Flat Earth movement. If current trends are anything to go by, 2018 is only going to be better!

Happy New Year to all Flat Earthers, and those not yet convinced. Thank you for continuing to accompany us on this wild journey through time and space.

Suggestions & Concerns / Press/Media relations
« on: December 22, 2017, 01:25:14 PM »
Hi guys,

So this is a topic that's been building up for a while, and I figured it's best to ask everyone about how to best handle this.

As we've recently become more and more popular on social media, we started receiving a fair amount of interview/comments requests from mainstream media outlets. Many of them express initial interest only to go completely quiet afterwards, but a fair few came through, and I think we've benefited from the exposure (even if they do try to slant it negatively a lot of the time).

Now, up until now, when these requests came in, I'd normally either take them myself or speak to a few people that I thought might be interested. If you are one of those people I should keep in mind and I haven't spoken to you yet, please make yourself known - we can surely work something out. In principle, I would be in favour of setting up some internal communications channel for FES "veterans" to contribute towards interviews, share opportunities, etc. Personally, I would prefer for this to be a closed/hidden space - I think that would be a good middle ground between accepting contributions and outright publishing everyone's communications with the media. I'd be interested to hear how others feel, or if there is even interest in many others speaking to the press. If not, it's easy enough to keep it down to PMs/IMs.

The other issue is closing the loop. The media are writing about us - how do we tell our visitors that this is happening? One thing I've had in mind was described by Thork in another thread today:

Just make a 'media' tab in the menu and list them there with details of how media can contact us?

Another alternative could be to simply make Announcements posts about each individual publication - it would keep the homepage a bit fresher, at least for now. Or we could have a "recent media publications" sidebar section, similar to the "recent forum topics". Or any combination of these, or something else entirely. The possibilities are endless!

Please let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions about how best to approach this.

Announcements / Changes to the merch store
« on: December 03, 2017, 01:51:42 PM »
Hi guys,

Just a quick one to let you know about some of the things I've been working on in our store.

First of all, the store has now been re-structured into categories. Our previous listing was becoming a little bit busy. Too busy, perhaps. To make the browsing experience a little bit clearer, things have been broken down into broad (but hopefully self-explanatory) groups.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, in response to feedback from Twitter (especially our new followers following the Elon Musk saga), we now sell stickers and mugs. I hope to include more sticker designs in the near future, but this initial set should at least tide us over during the time of rapidly increased demand.

As always, all markups have been set to $0 and the prices consist of just the CafePress base costs. I am also awaiting delivery of the first few samples, and I'll make sure to report on the quality of the stickers as soon as I've received them.

Have a great day!

Back in the day, we had a sticky thread to help people keep track of who's in charge of various aspects of the site. While I appreciate that the old thread has gone out of date and it made perfect sense to desticky it, I do believe it served an important function that should be restored.

To try and explain why I'm suggesting this: I found out today that 3DGeek has been trying to get in touch with the person in charge of the Wiki to correct (among other things) a spelling mistake. Putting how I feel about 3DG to one side for a moment, I think it's fair to say that if someone who's been around for as long as he has doesn't know how to make a suggestion like this, it's probably a sign that we're doing something wrong.

Reinstating that thread could be a good first step in helping people find the right contact. I don't know what the best place for the thread would be these days, it doesn't really click with the current spirit of Announcements imho - maybe a sticky in S&C, the place people will ordinarily go to complain?

I'll also be looking into other ways to improve communication around the Wiki, but that's probably something for a separate thread.

Philosophy, Religion & Society / Catalonia declares independence!

The absolute madmen did it!

What happens next? A civil war? Spain backing down? Catalan leaders not actually knowing what to do now that they're simultaneously "independent" and literally fired?

Announcements / Condemnation of a recent act of vandalism in PA
« on: July 21, 2017, 01:25:58 PM »
It's been brought to our attention that some members of the wider Flat Earth community have engaged in an act of vandalism in a community park in Erie, Pennsylvania. Benches and trees were spray-painted on. While we do not believe that the perpetrators had any affiliation with the Flat Earth Society specifically, we do believe that it merits a response.

To be completely clear, the Flat Earth Society is appalled to hear that there are people in our community who would willfully damage public property. We understand people's enthusiasm to spread the message, but this is not the right way to go about it. Firstly, it does not help our cause - people do not see kindly to vandalism, and are likely to be left with a bitter taste in their mouths after seeing something like this. Secondly, we believe that public property commands a certain degree of respect and dignity from those who make us of it. If we don't all take responsibility for spaces like this, who will?

By all means, please continue educating people on the Earth's shape. Do encourage them to research it and formulate their own opinions. But please, do so in ways that do not harm the community around us. Let's do better than this.
