...but how important is he?
Immensely important.  Their red zone threat is done.  Unless they are hitting the deep ball, prepare for a lot of field goals.

Have the Patriots already proven they can win without him?
No.

Obviously he is important, perhaps that wasn't the right word. Is he absolutely essential to the Pats?

No.

They won 5 of 6 (I think he missed 6?) without him.

NO was the only notable win without him.  Of course, the schedule is the schedule, and they won.  I think he is absolutely essential to make a deep run in January.

Who is going to beat them in the AFC, and make me lose my bet?

Possibly Denver, more likely Baltimore.

Unlikely Denver, possibly Baltimore but I give the Patriots the edge in that scenerio as well. Brady and Belichick are winners. Brady wins. (o but he lost one game on time o no) he will find a way.

He is 0-2 in his last two Superbowls.  One of those with arguably the best offense ever.

Yes. I know.  He lost a game he should have won. It happens.

Brady's post season record is 17-7, I cant be bothered to verify this but possibly the best in the NFL? Up there, for sure. I would say with that loss in mind, they have also exceeded expectations in past years, and this year.

double post #yolo

Also, only one other QB has equal superbowl appearences.

Missing Gronk is pretty big, because it puts a lot more pressure on Edelman and Amendola to consistently make plays. Of course, Tom Brady has done more with less, but it'll still hurt their chances in the playoffs. Gronk is great because there's almost no defensive player in the league that could cover him in a 1 on 1 situation.

Also, I'm going to state this right now. Wins and losses are a team stat. This includes Superbowl wins and losses. I'm sure I've broken this rule before, but attributing wins and losses to a QB, or any individual player, is moronic.

I would argue the quarterback is the most influential player on the field, almost always. A bad QB = a bad team, and a bad (minus QB) team and a great QB can = an okay team.

Well, yeah, the QB is the most important player on the team. Excluding the coach, GM, and owner, he may be the most important person in the entire organization.

Eh, here is where you start to make the leap from "most important" to "only thing of importance". The 2000 Ravens won a Superbowl with Trent Dilfer at QB. Meanwhile, guys like Philip Rivers and Dan Marino, both very very good QB's, have never won a Superbowl.

What's more important than having a good QB is having a system that your QB can thrive in. Tom Brady, if playing on the Bears for the last decade or so, would be far less successful. That's because Tom Brady relies on good pass protection to be successful, and the Pats have been smart and kept a great line in front of him for the vast majority of his career.

The QB gets too much credit in a win and too much blame in a loss.  Not saying I agree that is okay, but that is reality, especially with the transition to a pass-heavy league.

Yes, and it's silly. That's why I rarely watch ESPN or read the majority of websites about football. People prefer superficial analysis to actual analysis.

As promising as the Pats young receivers are, without Gronk they lack a real, "you must plan for this guy or else" weapon. It's looking grim for the Pats, but the Broncos also lost Welker for who knows how long. It feels like a coin-toss to me in the AFC. I am not sold enough on Baltimore to throw them in as the AFC champ yet.

I have faith their receivers will handle the extra pressure, continue to grow. We have talent at running back as well.

Also, if you made a team of just players that tore their ACL this season, it would probably be a playoff contender.
