Arts & Entertainment / Listening to Spoon's Entire Discography
« on: June 24, 2019, 04:14:00 AM »
So this thread is kind of odd, because I've already heard every full release from Spoon, but I realized there were a bunch of EPs I never listened to, so I decided this would be as good a time as any to listen through the entirety of their works in order. I'm mainly interested because there are pretty drastic shifts in their style across the years, and I'm curious to see if any of these EPs sort of fit as missing puzzle pieces between them, bridges that, well, bridge the gap between sounds. Full disclosure: I fucking love this band to death but I'm gonna try my best to speak from some sort of vague, hand-wavy """objective""" standpoint. Y'all know by now I'm not exactly the best at reviews but, whatever, I enjoy doing them so I'm gonna do 'em. Starting off with my first bit of new Spoon, their first ever release:

Title: Nefarious (EP)
Release: 1994

All songs written by Britt Daniel.

Tracklist

1. Government Darling (2:33)
2. This Damn Nation (2:31)
3. Nefarious (2:45)
4. Not Turning Off (3:01)

It's fascinating seeing the dirty, grimy origins of a band that you know is, now, incredible. I did my best to dive into these really early records without the headspace of knowing a good chunk of the rest of their discography. In that mindset, this isn't exactly phenomenal, but it's a very promising little taste of a small group with big ambitions. They don't know where they want to go or what they want to be, yet, but they know they want to do something off the beaten path. It's not exactly groundbreaking for indie rock, but it's an hors d'oeuvre, a little sign that maybe you should keep an eye on this band. It's brazen and clearly punk-inspired with the way they twist and bend instruments and keep you guessing at what they're going to do, but with more of an ear for rhythm and melody that can dig its way into your brain. The lyrics are pretty meh at this point, with Britt not seeming to really have anything to say but having a lot of lines that sound neat on their own without really adding up to anything more.

In the grand scheme of their work it's not much, but as a garage band it's impressive.

I haven't 110% decided on the parts, I just have a list so I can have an estimated cost while I figure things out, but it's happening. I ordered the processor and it just arrived today so I can't back out now. Can't wait to see how I fuck this up.

Processor: Intel i7-7700k

Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z270E GAMING LGA1151

Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H100i v2 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB)

SSD: Samsung 960 EVO Series 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD

HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB

Graphics Card: ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 8GB

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3, 80+ Gold 650W

Optical Drive: LG Internal UH12NS30 BD-ROM Blu-ray Drive

Sound Card: Creative Labs 30SB150200000 SB1502VP Sound Blaster Z

Wireless Adapter: ASUS PCE-AC88

OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Like I said, still a few things I need to figure out (like what case to use, ideally something subdued and simple) and all of these are potentially subject to change. But they're each right in the range I want. Next paycheck I'm buying the motherboard.

Arts & Entertainment / Nintendo Switch
« on: October 20, 2016, 07:05:38 PM »

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh God it's exactly what I was hoping it would be. And this seems to hint at Wii U backwards compatibility. I wish they'd gone with the "Nintendo Duo" name, but the Switch ain't too bad. Way better than "Wii U".

But seriously, I love the idea of a portable/console hybrid. Stick it in the docking station it's a full-power console; take it off, it's a portable that's less powerful but you can bring anywhere.

I honestly think this is gonna be really successful if this means portable series like Pokémon and Fire Emblem are gonna be made for the Switch as well. Big screen mainline Pokémon game? Finally????

I'm actually really excited for this. It looks absolutely gorgeous. Seriously, no, just look at it.

It's not a new Fallout, unfortunately, but hopefully it's got the same level of writing as their past gos at it.

Hi, everyone! How are you doing? Shitty? That's cool! It's been a while.

Guess what I've discovered? No, not that I'm retarded. No. No. No, I discovered a new band that I absolutely love. They're called Мельница! No, that's not "Mepibhnua", it's, approximately, "Mel'nitsa". Basically pronounced "Mell-neat-sah". Which (I think) means "Windmill" in Russian. Oh, the band is Russian. In case that wasn't obvious. I've been learning Russian...very...very...very...very slowly. Honestly, so slowly that at this point I can simply read Cyrillic at a Russian kindergartner's reading pace and I can tell you where I am and inquire about the location of several things. But, yes, because of this learning I've been exploring Russian music for the past month or so.

It's been a while since I found an artist I love so much that I want to listen to their entire discography (the last time was probably in 2013 or 2014), but it's happened. So I'm gonna do it.

I'm excited!

Arts & Entertainment / Tomodachi Life in FES Isle
« on: October 13, 2015, 09:46:27 PM »
So I started a game of Tomodachi Life using people on FES. I've been planning to document the progress, but the only way to capture video directly from a 3DS is by modding it and I don't have money for that. So, unless someone wants to finance that, I'll be probably writing up what happens and occasionally posting a badly-recorded-from-my-phone video, but don't expect that very often.

For those who don't know, Tomodachi Life is basically a wonderfully weird life sim game. Adorable, but quirky.

To get personality, they basically give you a list of characteristics and ask you to place them where they are on each thing. Like, Lazy <---> Energetic, Reserved <---> Outgoing, that sort of thing. From there, they extrapolate an overall personality.

Mii profiles:

tbh I have no fucking idea how this happened. He still acts like Parsifal and sucks at making friends, but for some reason he's utterly convinced he has amazing social skills

To start, I want to show this wonderful dream Thork had the other day that I think everyone will appreciate. You might want to turn your volume up a lot because it's quiet as hell:

Arts & Entertainment / FES Comic/Graphic Novel Club
« on: August 18, 2015, 06:24:39 AM »
Why didn't I make one of these forever ago?

I've been reading the New 52 Batman run (2011 - ) (written by Scott Snyder, art Greg Capullo and Jonathan Glapion). The art is its weak point so far by far. It's not terrible, but at best it can really only be called "passable", less and less so the more humans there are in-panel. Once stuff gets weird, though, in issues #5 and #6, then the art actually starts getting interesting, mainly due to how they just start becoming exaggerated. However, assuming it goes back to being about regular Batman stuff, it's probably going to be bland unless Scarecrow shows up at some point. That I would be interested in.

The Court of Owls storyline has not been super fascinating, and...well, Batman summarized how I feel better than I could have.

In other news, I read Alan Moore's The Killing Joke (1988) (art by Brian Bolland) because it's a comic legend. It wasn't anything super special, but it was good. Has some great Joker art, as well as some of his best lines in the franchise. "You're doing what any sane man in your appalling circumstances would do. You're going mad." As well as the whole speech at Batman:

"You see, it doesn't matter if you catch me and send me to the asylum...Gordon's been driven mad. I've proved my point. I've demonstrated there's no difference between me and everyone else. All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day. You had a bad day once, am I right? I know I am. I can tell. You had a bad day and everything changed. Why else would you dress up like a flying rat?"

Finally, the wonderful "If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!" line that assured the Joker would have a hundred thousand backstories from that day forward.

That's all for now, but I plan to keep this updated. But we all know how well that works out.

Any other fellow comic nerds, feel free.

I want everyone to be in my Smash Bros. because I can. If you have a picture I can base it off of that is good, if not then I will need details on your face shape, your hair (style and colour), your eyebrows, your eyes, your nose, your mouth, glasses/facial hair/beauty mark, height and size. Miis are pretty limited so I will do the best I can but nothing shall be perfecttt

Eventually I'd like to hold FES tournaments and I'll either stream them or record and upload them once I figure out how to do so. But for now I'd just like to get them in there

sosososo fill out bellow

1) Picture

or

Use this crappy site to make your own and I will make it on my Wii U

or

fill out extensive alternate form:

face shape:
hair:
eyebrows:
eyes:
nose:
mouth:
glasses:
facial hair:
beauty mark:
height-ish:
size-ish:

2) NEXT decide if you want to be a fighter, gunner or swordsperson.

3) If that's all you care about, leave it at that. If you don't want to do this part, I'll make it up for you. If you want to get into the nitty gritty of outfits:

Here are all outfits for each class
Here are all hats

I currently do not have all the DLC outfits, which are...cat suit, X's armor, Link outfit, monkey suit, and some of the hats (mainly Zelda/Mega Man themed ones). So if you pick one I don't have I'll tell ye.

4) Then for moves, pick one from each special category (one neutral special, one side special, one up special and one down special). Like the last step, if you don't wanna fill this part out I'll just decide moves for you

Brawler Moveset
Gunner Moveset
Swordfighter Moveset

I think that is everything. I'm really tired and a bit doped up so this is disorganized and maybe confusing so if you need elucidation ask and ye shall receiveth. Once we have a good amount of people we can find out who is FES' best.

Arts & Entertainment / The Fall Out Boy discography listen-throughj
« on: December 30, 2014, 11:49:50 PM »
Fall Out Boy was not the band that got me "into" music, ever. I haven't listened to just pretty much any of their stuff in my life, so this time and next time, I'm going to do a complete listen-through of their material, in chronological order, and post a short review of each thing here.

"Chronological" is applied according to Wikipedia; I might be starting with their first release, or rather with their earliest released recording, stuff. Yep. I won't include any compilations, and I won't include Relics, because that's a Pink Floyd album.

I plan to finish with their most recent album, the last time the four members of Fall Out Boy ever released an album so far. Then I'll return when American Beauty/American Psycho gets released, to post a review of that.

Arts & Entertainment / Sonic games are literally the worst
« on: July 31, 2014, 01:39:12 AM »
I didn't really know where to put this, but:

Finally, someone agrees. I have a place in my heart for the series, mainly thanks to Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 (which were mainly thanks to Sonic's levels and, more than anything, the chao gardens which omgomg adorable ;w; ), but I have always staunchly thought the first few games were simply not good games. They are terribly designed, IMO, and amazingly flawed, and this video really hits all the nails on their respective heads.

Title sums it up pretty well. :P I know someone's going to think it's the epic funnies to post some weird song or a 'bad' song, so ha ha ha in advance. To be helpful, describe as much about what you want similar to the song as you can, don't just post a song (or songs) and nothing else. As an example, I'll start.

There's something about the feel of this song that I just love. Even though it's basically just rock music, I dunno, it's got this heart and attitude and sound that pulls at something in me. The pounding guitars and drums combined with the soulful, almost desperate voice, with a very almost southern-American feel to it. Plus the very descriptive and story-like lyrics that are so specific and combined with the emotion of his voice are just jakflsj for me. I really love how it almost sort of feels like a slow song but the music behind it says otherwise, and the "we can't WAAAAAAIT" kills me every time. Wikipedia describes it as "heartland rock", but I haven't felt like going through its examples yet. So, Pandoras of FES, plz help?

Arts & Entertainment / Star Wars: Episode VII (cast list released!)
« on: April 30, 2014, 01:49:52 AM »
Post any and all thoughts about the upcoming trilogy, as well as casting and incessant whining and bitching.

Here's the confirmed cast:

Quote
Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Production on it starts next month, apparently. It will be released December 18, 2015.

http://www.polygon.com/2014/3/18/5518032/project-christine-razer-nabu-steambox

Basically as the title says. Razer is working on (or wants to start work on) this type of computer that I think would be pretty sweet. A few brief snippets to kind of showcase and summarize:

"Each component of the concept computer is enclosed in a mineral oil-cooled chamber and can be easily installed into the system's PCI Express-powered backbone. Everything from the CPU to GPU and memory can be popped into the system."

"Perhaps more intriguing is that Tan's broader plans for the system is to tie it to a subscription service that would allow users to pay a monthly fee to essentially always have a top-of-the-line computer."

This seems like a pretty awesome idea to me, especially as someone with a crappy to mediocre computer. I would be totally on board with something like this. Not to mention it would also simplify the process of having and maintaining a gaming computer for those who are not as experienced with computers and are more intimidated by swapping out parts and figuring out what to buy and just, as a whole, the annoying process of upgrading a PC.

Arts & Entertainment / Saturday Night Live (Rolling Stone's Top 50)
« on: February 08, 2014, 08:26:47 AM »
So, Rolling Stone just posted this list. I decided to go through it since I've never really watched SNL, but what I've seen of it is pretty terrible.

After going through this...it...definitely...is pretty terrible. There were a handful of sketches that were alright, and a couple that were funny, but most of these kind of suck a lot. I don't see why people found Chris Farley funny, either, as he occupies several spots on this list.

I mean, I know that modern SNL is lambasted for being pretty unfunny, but...am I crazy in not thinking old SNL was funny either? The only one who ever makes me laugh is Norm MacDonald (him in #45 made me laugh until they wore it thin), and they even manage to beat his funny bits until it's a fully-decomposed horse, and then keep going.

So I'm curious if there's anyone here that actually likes/liked the show. I want to hear opinions! Also, what do you think of the list if you do?

Arts & Entertainment / Philip Seymour Hoffman found dead
« on: February 02, 2014, 09:31:36 PM »
Apparently from a drug overdose. This sucks...he's such an amazing actor. I hate that these amazing people get into that sort of stuff. These kinds of unexpected deaths are the worst...where you read it and have a minor emotional breakdown because it's so out of nowhere and you know you'll never see this person's work again.

I'm not gonna write up a cheesy obituary because I really hate them, but he was in amazing movies like "The Master", he played Truman Capote in "Capote", and generally just did amazing work. Even when he was in not-so-great films he was a highlight.

I wonder what they're going to do with the next two Hunger Games films now, since he died while filming it and his character is very important...ugh, what a horrible day. I'll miss him and all.

Arts & Entertainment / Bo Burnham
« on: December 14, 2013, 04:05:48 AM »
While this thread didn't go very well over at .org and I was pretty much the only one who liked him, I'm poasting this because he has a new show coming out and I'm excited. Here's a new bit from it (it'll be free up on YouTube/Netflix soon) that made me laugh quite a bit, although the end is pretty cheesy:

If anyone's interested I'll put up more bits from him I like, or if you like him at all you can share your own. :]
