Need an office/computer desk
« on: July 28, 2018, 09:27:48 PM »
I just bought a new office chair as my last one was falling to bits. I could use a good desk to go with it.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/IntimaTe-WM-Heart-Reclining-Ergonomic/dp/B07DCMSGJ2/ref=sr_1_16?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1532813214&sr=1-16&keywords=office+chairs&refinements=p_89%3AIntimaTe+WM+Heart

Anyone got any good suggestions? I've been looking at the height adjustable ones that you can stand or sit at, but I don't want to pay £400 for a new desk - or if I did, it would have to be an epic desk.

Perfect start. That is exactly what I don't want. This should help other people make better suggestions.

Why are you trying to get people on this forum to put legitimate effort into helping you shop for a desk? Just go to IKEA and accept that the vikings have once again enslaved your people. They already took all of your good looking women, might as well give them your money, too.

I was kind of hoping someone would say ... I have this desk and its great because ...

When I look on Ikea there are over 300 desks and I have no idea what I want after browsing for a while.

build a whiteboard table at ikea.  the white, glossy countertops and tabletops are pretty cheap (>$50), and you can select whatever table legs you like.

if there's an ikea nearish you, i recommend going to the store to check out the options for yourself.  or here are the links to those pages:

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/workspaces/11844/?color=white
https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/ikea_kitchens/33546/

i have this desk and it's great because my whole desk is a whiteboard surface.
I have visited from prestigious research institutions of the highest caliber, to which only our administrator holds with confidence.

I know a guy who bought a desk and he says it was great.I also think my desk is great but you'd probably hate it because I like it.
If you are going to DebOOonK an expert then you have to at least provide a source with credentials of equal or greater relevance. Even then, it merely shows that some experts disagree with each other.

Personally, I don't like to think of a desk as a single item. I've built mine from parts. The legs and tabletop came from IKEA:

They no longer sell my tabletop, but this is similar, just a bit thinner than mine: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/desks/table-tops-legs/linnmon-table-top-black-brown-art-00251343/
Legs are a no-brainer to me, I want to be able to set the height of the whole shebang, although I don't care for doing so frequently: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/desks/table-tops-legs/olov-leg-adjustable-black-art-30264301/

I then followed that up with a keyboard and mouse drawer: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0002LCZP0/
And a three-monitor arm holder: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B77XC8C/

Finally, I topped it off with a PowerCube, because I'm a nerd and I need my easily-accessible power: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Allocacoc-PowerCube-Extended-Power-Socket/dp/B00GLBDVM6/
A headphone holder that was meant for walls but I modified it and tacked it on to the side of my desk anyway: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005MZKCJM/
And a few cable holders for random bits and bobs:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01KFQB5WA/
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01LY09I61/

The final setup is a bit disorganised, but then again so am I. I just like to add things to it when I think they would be nice to have. Of course, I'm a messy piece of crap, so the final result doesn't look impressive at all. But hell, it's functional. I love my desk. Make sure you love yours.

You bought a headphone holder ... and then put the headphones on a different holder?

Ok, so build-a-bear style desks. I hadn't considered this.

My monitor isn't height adjustable so I'm going to need something like https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/desks/table-tops-legs/alex-add-on-unit-white-art-20260718/
To stick on something like https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/desks/table-tops-legs/klimpen-table-top-light-grey-art-90353747/
With something underneath like this https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/desks/table-tops-legs/gerton-leg-adjustable-chrome-plated-art-60261626/

with something like https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/desks/table-tops-legs/alex-storage-unit-white-art-60192826/

The problem is the colours and sizes don't match very well. The desks are all the wrong lengths for the thing that sits on top, and the colours don't match and the legs don't match that, then the drawers don't match ... there isn't enough choice of everything to make a coherent desk. I guess this is going to take some time ... standby.

I have many pairs of headphones, each suiting a different purpose - in the photo, you can see two pairs on separate holders, but there was a third pair on my head ;)

Sounds about right! It's all about what you do and don't find useful. Personally, the add-on unit would be useless to me since I don't really have any stationery that I'd like to put in drawers, and I prefer monitor arms with VESA mounts to desk raisers, but that's the beauty of it all. Different people will come with extremely different setups.

You definitely can make a coherent setup out of IKEA parts, but personally I've always found it much easier to just walk down and look at things (and bring a tape measure with me) rather than try to figure it out online.

Mmm.

I'm kind of thinking RGB ... but with a warm white ... so the desk is illuminated from the back. I don't want the colours, but a bit of extra light might be cool.

Also I have an AIO that tilts but doesn't rise so definitely need something to put it on.

Ok done.

I have ordered

I'll build that first before I worry about cable management and lighting. £280 with delivery ... not sure how I feel about that. Have to wait and see when its built.

You can convert basically any desk into a standing desk for fairly cheap.

Ahh, but then its only standing. I don't want to stand all day. I thought you meant the ones that rise and ... I want to say fall? What is the opposite ... descend. Ok. Brain misfired.

This is all well and good, but it costs too much for what it is.

I was talking about adjustable desks. There are a variety of products you can use with an existing desk to go back and forth. Some are cheaper and more manual in operation. The automated ones are more expensive though.

Ikea do one with a little crank handle. I couldn't be Thorked to wind it round and round and round every time I stood up. The desk needs to be a sit down thing.

Chair has arrived. Has been assembled. Is a huge improvement of the back breaker I had before.
