Time for a new SMF theme?
« on: October 17, 2015, 01:44:52 PM »
We've have the same SMF theme now, since Daniel picked it back in 2005. It is 10 years old.

I was wondering if we shouldn't pick a new one? Something a bit more modern. Also, why would we want to copy the other site? We are way past that. We have a superior site.

Maybe a fresh look and feel would be beneficial? Also suggest that our ideas aren't as old as our web page.

Some of the new ones are really rather nice.

Change a few colours ... perfect. Maybe we could even move away from blue?

nice and simple ... then cover in our logos and background?

There are 700 or so themes. Why do we have the one Daniel choose in 2005 still? If we want to be taken seriously in our own right, we need to cut the ties with the other mess so we aren't associated with it.

Anyone else think a fresh look and feel might be nice? We could leave this old one as an option for all those that hate change. But for new users, I think we should try to project a sleek and eye-catching site. Might also be the final straw for members of the super slow rival site, and have them come here where things are awesome and nice so we'd get more users. :-)

It hasn't been the same since 2005, it was changed back in 2012 or so when Tintagel made a new one.

That being said, I'm fine with getting a new theme, perhaps something that's more in line with my designs for the home page and wiki. I could take care of logos, buttons, and whatever other custom elements we need.

Sure. Leveraging a new theme would give us new buttons, drop downs that kind of thing. And then with your work on the home page styling / graphics, we should end up with something quite enviable. :-)

I think this'd be a great idea. I quite like the sleek, simplistic look of the Exodus theme, that second one.

Any other interest in this? Of course it will largely be up to the admin team to implement. I think many of us are ready for a fresh look. Do the admins wish to provide it?

Since it's going to take a while longer, might as well provide a status update on this: we (well, currently just me) are currently working on implementing a new theme based on Redsy, one of the themes you linked in the OP. It's going to feature a new design by me and some quality of life changes. You can view the work in progress here: http://forum.blanko.tfes.org (you can log in with your account, but your password would be the one you used in April)

Mind you, there's nothing stopping us from having multiple themes and letting people choose.

we should certainly leave this current one available, but a new fresh one for fresh visitors would be great. they don't know why we have a 10 year old theme.

Agreed, Blanko's new theme should be made the default one when it's ready.
